earthycouple -> Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:20:42 PM)

ok...so I have a good friend who needs a bone marrow transplant.  His own sister won't offer to donate because "it will hurt too much".

I can't believe people.  Her brother has CANCER and she is afraid of painful marrow aspiration...

bah...I've offered my marrow to him.  Who else would offer up marrow if they knew someone in need?

For anyone who doesn't know...you need to be a match (simple blood test) and if you are a match then they aspirate from your hip into the bone...it is painful...but it's in and out, fairly easily....not a day in the hospital or anything....

Take my Marrow, please!

Lumus -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:22:13 PM)

Considering most pain medication doesn't work on me, and I already have a high pain tolerance to begin with, the pain's not much of a factor.

I'd volunteer.

I would. Giving blood is another life saver, and being an organ donor.

earthycouple -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:25:02 PM)

I donate blood and am an organ donor too.  It goes beyond the nurse in me to want to do these things...it's my want to give a fuck, ya know?

I have given my bone marrow to a complete stranger. It has to be six point match and people with mixed ethnicities are most wanted. The took marrow from my iliac crest, hip and femur. I was in the hospital for 3 days post op. It depends on the hospital and doctor how long you stay. It was sore but not in excuciating pain. I always encourage people to be on the list. It isn't always a happy ending but you can give someone time with their loved ones they wouldn't have had before.

I'm on the Donor Register. No ones asked for it yet, but it's there for anyone who wants it, worldwide. I don't care who needs it, it costs me nothing, and I can't see why anyone could deny someone the chance at life. Lets face it, childbirth is horrific, but most women still give birth. Giving bone marrow is horrific, but sheesh, we're talking about someones life.

KatyLied -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:38:45 PM)

I would probably donate, but it would depend on things such as risk, health insurance coverage, etc.  But I would not say no to it because of pain.  I know that if my health insurance didn't cover it (or if the recipient didn't cover it) I would not be able to afford a three day hospital stay on my own dime.

BlackKnight -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:38:46 PM)

spaeking of which I gotta go down and donate blood/plasma probably plasma, cause I hate the redcross,
they make me angry everytime I try to donate blood.
on 9-11 zero hour I went down to donate my o+ blood and I got shuffled around and theynever took my blood
then since then everytime I try to give blood, the shuffle me around and either they don't take it, or I go threw HELL for them to take it!
I'll go down and give plasma at the local plasma center.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:43:53 PM)

Not much of a shock here, but i have donated before.  And would again. Blood for the most part, but I was screened for a marrow transplant when my ex husbands sister needed one. I was screened for several other organ potentials, but I have always been on medications that wouldnt allow for the transfer. However, being O+ blood comes in handy, I give anytime anyone i know is going in for surgery (which comes in handy with angel) and whenever else i can.

I would do it too.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:51:33 PM)

i'm registered as a bone marrow, organ and blood donor

beargonewild -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 6:53:54 PM)

I have no issue about donating bone marrow, friend or stranger that wouldn't matter. My best friend suffers from kidney disease and she had asked me a few years ago if I would consider donating a kidney if necessary. I said yes without hesitation. With Canada's new laws regarding blood donors, I am automatically disqualified as a blood donor.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 7:01:26 PM)

In most cases the recipients insurance pays for costs. In my case the flight to Denver, hotel  all blood work, meds, surgery were paid by the recipients insurance. Because of the distance I stayed 5 days total in Denver. The registries policy is not to tell you who the donor is for 1 year and you have to sign a disclosure agreement for legal reasons. It is up to the recipient and or their family if they want to contact you.

Yep, I'm already in the national registry.

pahunkboy -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/23/2007 7:42:05 PM)

ok. for those who dont know- the same intrusive questions are asked- as if you are giving blood via the Red Cross. Basically they pry and ask if you had any fun since 1975. Persons that had risky sex cant give blood. This was contravesial- but a court decree was ironed out as tainted blood ended up in the blood supply. So there was a lawsuit.

If you deny having risky sex, in other words if you lie- it is perjury. A nurse asks you questions in carefully chosen words- at the end you are asked to sign the form- the nurse gives you time to reflect. [looks or steps away]

If you cant give blood to the red cross- then you can not give bone marrow to them.

The exeptions change from time to time. I spent a year there-[Red Cross]  Some gays claim it is unfair that [they]cant give blood. [but] If one NEEDS blood- sexual orientation has no baring.

There are sell your blood places- with looser standards. Which is dicy to recieve blood from.

The Red Cross ALWAYS needs blood. PARTIcularly when folks are out of town.

soultoshare -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/24/2007 1:28:01 PM)

I'm already an organ donor, and I'd do the marrow thing too if asked, or if it was family.  I once offered to be a surrogate womb for my best friend, if I can do that feeling about kids like I do, well, hell, a little body part isn't a big deal!  What's a few days of pain in exchange for the chance to save someone's life?  I'll live, and the PTB willing, so will the recipient.

divi -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/24/2007 1:34:46 PM)

Yes I would donate.  I give blood and platelets to my best friends brother who has Leukemia( sp )

domiguy -> RE: Would you give your bone marrow? (9/24/2007 1:37:32 PM)

I would give her the bone but hang onto my marrow....Shit, just cuz ya got cancer doesn't mean you are still not up for a good fucking...You people are really pretty damn inconsiderate.
