No matter how much I enjoy the smell of leather and it's feel, I'm constantly haunted by where it came from and the process that was used to produce such an item. I was fighting long and hard inside to decide if I would make an exception for leather BDSM gear, but it all seems rather childish to me now. It's official: I'm not using leather. Too much of that squick factor when I think about it.

So do any of you lifestylers have a preferred non-animal material for a BDSM gear? I know many things are made in vinyl, but I've also heard of vegan leather that's made out of Italy. If anyone has websites or brand names they'd like to share, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm almost tempted to buy the vegan leather myself and make my own toys. XD

Honestly, outside of using synthetics and non-leather organics available anywhere the only faux-leather cuffs and such I've found are from veganerotica.com.

I just make the effort to get non-leather whenever possible and suck it up when there is no other option.... and look forward to the growing market creating more sources in the future.  I'll be glad when there is more out there. :)

Wood, metal, rubber, lexan paddles; rubber and rope floggers;  lexan, bamboo, rubber canes....yeah, there's plenty out there to choose from.

Basically anything called vegan leather is really just anything non animal, pvc, latex etc.  If it is advertised as "vegan leather" its going to cost more because of the name.  Well that is what I found here in Australia.  There is a vegan leather shoe shop and it's terribly expensive for crappy shoes LOL.  I just buy non leather products for shoes and my fetish wear.   Just go on ebay and type in pvc or vinyl, in womens clothing.  Some is crap, some is great quality.  I dont own any leather and have never had a problem finding fetish wear.  I even go to second hand clothing stores and buy pvc pants etc really cheap and no one would ever know!! :)

I've found that vegan leather is technically a separate synthetic material than PVC or vinyl specifically made to be as close to leather as possible, and more durable than most vinyl/PVC things. It's sort of expensive compared to the alternatives, but less expensive than actual leather.

Thus, we must never forget that something is going to die in the name of our kink.

Amen.

I'm so glad you brought this part up! It is a concern of mine, how do I weigh a personal preference over adding to the crap that never decomposes in a landfill?
I would rather be earth-friendly than salve my personal conscience.

Check out the smittenkitten in Minneapolis. It's run by a couple of young women who are at the forefront of promoting safer toys for play.
