SusanofO -> Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 3:54:17 PM)

Did anyone else watch Oprah today? Her show was on sex practices of American women and also couples.

She had a sex expert on ( Dr. Pepper Schwartz, with whom some of you may be familiar) who said that *sex for women generally gets much better for them in their 40's, 50's and on up. I have to agree with her there, I know I am much more relaxed about, and enjoy sex more now in my late 40's than I ever did in my 20's. I am just more relaxed about it all, I guess.

*She also said that a substantial percentage of women enjoy "Erotic" films (formerly known as "Porn"), and that it's good for them to watch if they enjoy it, and it helps their sex lives. Several women testified they watched it frequently, and also said how much it helped them function sexually (as far as giving them creative ideas about having sex) and also to just relax about sex generally. Some said they watch it alone, and some with their partner(s). Some watch it strictly as a prelude to sex, some at other times as well, simply because they enjoy it.

*Then there was also a couple on there discussing the concept of "Open marriage". They were maybe in their late twenties, and explained how well it was working for them that the wife had a BF, and that although the husband didn't have a GF yet, he would probably get one in the future, when he met someone he liked well enough. They seemed very happy and accepting of eachother.

This couple emphasized over and over that this had helped, not hurt, their marriage, and that they loved each other more than ever. They seemed pretty white-bread, articulate, relatively intelligent, middle class, and anything but "sleazy." I appreciated that, I guess, as I know on some other talk shows, when a segment of the population that some people may not understand is portrayed, it isn't always via people that do much for PR for that segment of the populace, IMO.

More like it  sometimes seems they go out of their way to find "Jerry Springer" trailer trash types - which can leave people watching with the impression that only largely dysfunctional types would engage in that practice (whatever it is). But this couple really seemed happy and together, and like they felt a lot of responsiblity toward eachother. Oprah was a little surprised by the whole "Open marriage" idea, but took it in stride for the most part.

Oprah is continuing this series on "Sex in America", and it looks like it will be a good series. I think, if I am not mistaken, that BDSM will be a future topic (among others), but am not sure when that will air (check her website - Oprah.com - they may list information on that, not now, but in the future). It isn't a consecutive series of shows, but is periodic, but it will be continuing.

Anyway, just wanted to say it was a good show, and see if anyone else saw it, and also let people know it will continue, and was (and is) worth watching, IMO.

I have to give Oprah credit for bringing sexual topics to the fore, on a show watched by many women, (and also men) - even if there was nothing particularly risque' about the way any of it was portrayed - I just thought it was generally encouraging  it was all being discussed in this popular a media forum, and that she planned to continue discussing somewhat "fringe" sexually-related topics.

Will Oprah be riding Stedman (oops, I mean, stedman, little s) around the studio that day? [:D]

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 4:08:46 PM)

Maybe! (they are apparently still dating).[:D]
I think Stedman is kind of hot.
Yeah - I guess if Oprah was going to be into BDSM, she'd probably be a Domme.

I caught just a bit of the show.  I would like to see the whole thing.  So thank you for telling us that it will be continued.  We can only hope that BDSM will be explained in a way that people can get passed certain word interpretations and concepts.  We need better information out there, but surely not the wrong kind of attentions!  But maybe I am delusional in hoping that people will see something they have a mindset against.

Alumbrado -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 4:17:36 PM)

If they were against it, it wouldn't be on Oprah... she is always very late to 'discover' controversial topics.

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 4:19:44 PM)

Well, if the way "Open marriage" was portrayed today is any indication, the show's producers will go out of there way to find a couple representing BDSM pracititioners that can somewhat appeal to "middle America". I think they are also going to be discussing "Swinging", and assume the same can be expected, as far as representation, when they discuss that.

Alumbrado: Well, IMO you're right about that - and it might be an indication BDSM is more "mainstream" than some believe. Ditto for "Swinging". Apparently, "Open marriage"  is practiced by 7-14% of married couples in the U.S. (depending on who you ask). While that isn't "mainstream", it is more prevalent that I'd have thought.

i stopped paying for networks- as programming has declined- and commericals are rampant even when skipped thru w tivo. i figure the shows will pop up on the 2nd tier channels

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 4:58:21 PM)

Well yes, Oprah is on CBS, so it's a major broadcast network show. Not sure if its on cable, maybe it's on "Satellite" cable TV (the kind with tons and tons of channels). Worth a look, if you run across it.

i know but my bill is already $65 -mainly cause i wanted the SIRIUS channels. im sorta mad at the networks for suing- so ild have to take a Wilkes-barre affiliate- and not an LA or Chicago affiliate. so they can keep their "valuable" broadcasting...

the meciocraty of TV is on its way to the Internet. between cell, DLS yadda yadda- i pay more out then i enjoy. i resent that too!
cell plans went up- for as much as i use it a disposable phone would work....and be cheaper.  these tech services dont let one cancel- [case in point AOL..they all do this now]

so, figure $200  a month. that $6.00 +++ a day.  thats doesnt count- mortage taxes insurance heat-

hmm- now u got me thinking. think ill post a poll

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 5:21:49 PM)

Sorry to hear that. I just have Cox Cable (about 28 channels, beside regular broadcast channels).

no problem.  its just the bills have crept up- and im re-asking why i have any service that i do. i resent the locked in contracts!  teck and life changes and one should re-evaluate their needs every 6 mos. text messages going up to .15. i know that is just one little thing- but one is billed weahter you read em or not. well i can fix that all right now- and by-pass the call centers that take forever and a day- and cant cancel an account. just stop apying money.  i was near screaming at some indian guy- that i dont need the service- i need roof and food!!

considering we are treated like shtt- and these rash of tainted products- [toothpaste-tires] why should i live up to my terms of contract when they are failing their end

?

we are pretty much like cattle

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 5:31:55 PM)

I have some beefs with the service end of Cox Cable in my town. They are slow, not ever on time for appointments, and sometimes completely inept. Unfortunately, for cable TV service, they are the only game in town (I don't have a Satellite dish, and judging from my experience with Cox, I am imagining the service only gets worse, not better, with more channels - but I could be wrong).

i enjoy sattilite because i can get the LA stations in. well one. and they broadcast live car chases. we have em east- but we dont broadcast em.

i had the biggest pagage at 1st- and nothing on tv. lol. oh well. and the HBO ,SHOWTIME rotates the movies- so it gets redundent. SHOWTIME is abit better then HBO.

6 states ban the xxx channels that DISh offers- so i had to get those for a while free speech tv and link tv i like

SusanofO -> RE: Ophrah Winfrey's TV show on Sex in the U.S. (9/25/2007 6:11:20 PM)

I'd consider Satellite, but I am moving, and its just too complicated right now. Maybe in a few months, I will, though - it sounds interesting.
