YANGON, Myanmar - Soldiers and police took control of the streets Friday, firing warning shots and tear gas to scatter the few pro-democracy protesters who ventured out as Myanmar's military junta sealed off Buddhist monasteries and cut public Internet access.

On the third day of a harsh government crackdown, the streets were empty of the mass gatherings that had peacefully challenged the regime daily for nearly two weeks, leaving only small groups of activists to be chased around by security forces.

Heart-breaking but not surprising, I suppose. I did think it was really cool that monks were leading the whole thing.

I'm having trouble seeing any good. Now the country is cut off from phones and internet.
Warped maybe, but I'm glad they shot the Japanese reporter. This needs to have outside intervention and shooting a foreigner will help bring that.

Maybe Iran's fearless leader can go over there and spread some more....... peace.

Seriously, it's a terrible situation in Burma. I'm thinking China will let a little more shit hit the fan, then "step in", to make themselves look good, they don't want any international smears against them as the Olympics are coming up.

I can't imagine what it must really be like to live in a country that is so cut off from the world. To not be able to call or communicate. Or to be able to show the truth of what is happening.
For about a month now I have been reading the Burma online news and it has made me really sad. Sometimes its just so hard watching things like this and not being able to do a thing to help.

It is sad, camille. Prime example of what another friend of mine calls "stupid human tricks". Hopefully, things will turn around for them.

''International smears'' --- You mean like an amphibious landing on the Taiwanese shores after a massive four-day aerial bombardment?   Yes....Of course, ''that International smear'' will come after the Olympics.

Yes, those kind. I wonder if we'd stop trading with them then......

As opposed to the U.S. where we have too much contact with the world?
Hopefully we won't be seeing advertisements on tv like for that Darfur stuff urging us to "do something."
I wonder if those ads run in other countries as well?
If the whole world "hates the U.S." like some people say why would they expect "us" to do anything about it?
"They burned our village."
Oh? And how many of them did you shoot and kill after they "burned your village?"
Did you burn their village after they burned your village?
People and countries like that need to step up.
Why do they think the U.S. should "do something" about (their) plight?
The same people who want us to "do something" would be screaming to the rooftops if we locked up the miscreants in GTMO!
Evidently they think that in a war you "fight nice."
I don't know why foreigners think that the U.S. is the world's police or rescue service. We're not.
Funny, some of the people who want our Troops out of Iraq want them in Darfur. Why?
I want our Troops out of Iraq too, and, about 130 other countries!
There is no good reason to still have Troops in S. Korea 56 years now.
"We should avoid foreign entanglements."

Popeye all I can say is that [for myself] I see people. Not Americans or French or Martian, I see people just like me except they are suffering things that I more than likely will never know first hand.

I see people in trouble and people in need. People that I wish I could actually help. There are times when I feel overwhelmed with sorrow because I have so much and I know others have so little. I do what I can but I sincerely wish I could do more. I wish I could fix things so that shit like this doesn't happen.

Camille, conversely those overseas look at the U.S. and see dollar signs$ and people they think they can "get over on."
Just look at all those "refugee" and "asylum" programs, they're all loaded with scams.
If they were offered "Asylum" in Russia do you think they'd take it?
And they were lobbied for by the Trial Lawyers Association!
But, lawyers wouldn't lobby for laws that would force U.S. Taxpayers to pay for lawyers for people who are trying to scam (our) system now, would they?
Those countries are the best argument for the Second Amendment that there is!
How'd you like to have a son or daughter in the military?
"He, She, died for "Myanmar, " "Darfur, " "Iraq."
No thanks!
Globalisation is not good for the U.S.

Good point. The Chinese have far more respect for international treaties and obligations once they have made them than any western country has.

Of course they have never made any agreement about Taiwan but their record suggests they won't precipitate an international crisis, it's not their style.

So, I'm assuming the Chinese never entered into any treaty or obligation regarding forced abortion, slave labor, or intellectual property rights.....

Come on Level. One could list the wrongs done by the US, the UK, France, Germany et al. The west isn't so clean on human rights, the difference is that the modern west exploit people through their corporations in developing countries and then claim it isn't anything to do with them.

I do agree that no one has "clean hands", MC, and corps do indeed exploit others far too much, but some's hands are dirtier than others, and I honestly see China in that category.

I would suggest that China's internal affairs are her business and none of ours.  China does not jump in our shit about our abortion policies so why do you care about theirs.
Slave labor....I would suggest not buying products produced by slave labor, remember how we dealt with apartheid in S. Africa?
Intellectual property rights...you might want to look into how Sears, Smith International, and Microsoft feel about that when they are the ones infringing on patents and copyrights.
If you do not trade with slavers then you are not supporting them.  As long as we continue to trade with slavers we will have pirated and slave labor produced products on our store shelves.
The government has the right and the authority to impose tariffs on goods and services imported into this country.  The government has the right and the authority to refuse entry into this country of any product of service that the government does not want here.
If you do not believe that try to get an unexpurgated copy of Al Jazera off of the net.
