Between DUI laws and taxation I think there will be alot less bars in the future overall. As much as one should not drive drunk, now they can bust even if you only had two beers. In fact in Utah they can bust you for DUI even if you haven't taken a drink at all. TV shops. I work at two, and even though alot of the competition has already gone out of business, we do not see a great upsurge in business. This is a throwawy society, so any type of repair shop is hurting. Even auto repair shops are having their bottom line fucked by having to buy all sorts of expensive test equipment and software. Alot of the smaller ones will be going down. In fact any small business might be extinct in years to come. Most are overtaxed and over-regulated. What does this mean ? This means big money is winning. Big money doesn't like sole proprietors or entrepenuers who might provide superior service. They want every dollar spent to go through their gigantic corporate coffers so they get their rakeoff. In a way they get a license to tax, but they represent themselves. In big business, major competitors are known, and they know that the public has limited choices. A small business is a random element. They do not like that. So they lobby and do everything they can to protect their market share, at the expense of who cares. Walmart is one of the biggest offenders. They will go to court against cities who deny them permits, actions by representatives of the people, who tried to stop them from building because they know what Walmart does. They get every tax break they can, even subsidies, and then pay shit wages. But that's not all, they will operate at a total loss until all of the competition is gone. Then strangely prices rise. If I were a city councilman in one of those oplaces who fought Walmart, I might even consider covert action against them. Not even a bomb or anything like that, but zoning restrictions so tight it will cost them a fortune. I would also consider making a permit for a superstore cost something like $10,000,000. I would use the money to give serious tax abatement to every locally owned business, and maybe even grants to allow them to also operate at a loss for a time, forestalling their demise. Construction carpenters are taking a hit. If you ever buy a new house, get brick over WOOD frame. Buddy of mine had almost a career putting the original siding back on a newer house. You get steel beams and styrofoam. These houses are literally junk. In time though, people might wake up to such an issue and insist on more conventional construction methods. Maybe. There are alot more than ten businesses headed for the abyss. Almost any small business, they will be hit with ever increasing taxes and regulation until they just can't cope with it anymore. If the trend continues, home ownership will be a thing of the past, because big business likes apartment buildings for their earning power. Cities like them for the concentrated tax base. Some people like them for some unknown reason. We are heading for a society in which we are put in little boxes, and never see any cash. Everything we buy will not only be taxed at every level, there will be all sorts of fees and who knows what else. It will be impossible to even determine your bank balance eventually. And it will be that way because big money wants it that way. Enough for now, I just got a tinge of heartburn thinking about this shit. T
