Status: offline 		I apologize if this not an appopriate post for the discussion.  I have tried to contact one of the moderators but my message has gone unread.  If it is an intrusion or inappropriate, feel free to delete.

I represent a new publishing company that focuses solely on working with people who trying to write their first manuscript.  I have a client who has written some lesbian bdsm and I was hoping to get some feeback for her from her potential audience in  terms of what works well, whether a reader would be tempted to buy the book if they just happened to flip to the pages that she has written so far.  If any one is interested in commenting, please let me know.

Status: offline 		from your post I gather that you are not only looking for erotic litiature. Is this correct? What support do you give a new writer? what outlets have you found for the books that you publish? If you publish someone and they have moderate or better sucsess, will you publish a second work? if not will you assist them in finding a new publisher?

I ask because a publishing house that I contacted offered to publish a short story that I wrote in novel form. I was excited and almost jumped blindly into signing the contract that they emailed me, but I took a step back and noticed a couple of major red flags. 1. my story was not long enough (in my opinion) to be considered a novel, I felt like it belonged in a short story collection. None of their books were on amazon or in Barnes and Noble etc. The only place to get the books was their own site. they were a "first manuscript only" house but made no inclination to help a good writer to get that second book out. after some research I also saw that they did not edit the work. Even Stephen King has an editor read and edits his works, I have no elusions that I am a better writer than King.

Have you ever contemplated self publishing?  It is a great way to get recognised in the beginning.

The things you mention would definitely be cause for concern.  The focus here is on people who wouldn't finish a novel if they didn't have support and encouragement along the way in terms of keeping the writng process going.  It's also the goal to help develop their writing skills so that their first book does sell. Part of that is getting feedback from the bookbuying public on the basic level of  "Yes, I would pay $14.95 to read this," or "No, I wouldn't and here's why."  Ideally people would get noticed and move to a more established publisher, but obviously that can't be guaranteed.

Status: offline 		As someone familiar with the business, I suggest POD publishers as opposed to actual self-publishing.  While the term "self-publishing" is often used to describe a POD situation, there is a difference between the 2, technically speaking.  For POD, I recommend Aventine Press.  They give the best deal and the quality is excellent.  I've never had a problem with them (in the past 4 years).  No matter which way you publish, GET SOMEONE TO EDIT the work.  It is much too difficult to do yourself because it is hard to be objective enough.  You'll want someone to not only copy edit, but line edit, as well.  Count on a minimum of 3 months for editing.  If someone tells you they can do it faster than that, find someone else.

I have considered it, but I beleive that the manuscript that I have is too short to publish as a novel. It is a rare person that will pay $10 for a 50 page book from someone that they have not heard of, no matter how good the synopsis is. also self publishing houses rarely offer editing services (or charge out the nose for it) and my work must be edited
