cyberdude611 -> US conducts another successful missile defense test (10/2/2007 3:11:02 PM)

Despite what doubters said at the start of the research, the missile defense system being developed in the US apparently does work. The Pentagon conducted a 6th straight successful test of the missile defense system coined as "Star Wars" by Ronald Reagan. The test conducted Friday successfully shot down a replicated North Korean Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.

The system is designed to be strategically deployed in the Pacific and in eastern Europe in order to protect NATO nations from rogue states such as North Korea and Iran who are developing nuclear weapons. The system however is strongly opposed by Russia who claims the system threatens their national security and the stability of central asia. The Russians are strongly opposed to placing a radar system in the Czech Republic and intercepter missiles in Poland. Putin has offererd several alternatives, both nations are continuing talks, and Russian officials were in Washington to observe the test last Friday.

The next test scheduled around March next year will be significant since it will include multiple warheads with decoys. Although the system may be able to shoot down a single ICBM, can it shoot down multiple missiles, and can the system determine the difference between real ICBMs and decoys? If that test is successful it may convince NATO to deploy the system.
