Status: offline 		At college today and the usual debate on what glass is,usual answers in that no one will agree so I will ask here.

Is glass a solid or in reality a super cooled liquid?

Status: offline 		Solid.... Antique glass windows where made by blowing glass and spinning it to make a disc, which was thicker closest to the middle due to centrefugal force. The disk was cut into triangles and placed into the leadwork, with the thickest piece at the bottom. In Later times they made windows in the same way, and the thickest part can be seen in the middle and is known as the bullseye.

If glass is liquid why is there no viscosity ?

Status: offline 		I would say solid if I had to guess.  If super heated it becomes liquid.  If it was a liquid then wouldn't it become a gas if superheated?

Edited to add that I'm laughing because none of that made any kind of sense.  I sucked in all of my sciences at school.

Status: offline 		Agreed that it is sort of in between, but it fits more of the criteria for a solid than it does a liquid. It resists deformatity while in a solid state, unless sufficient force is applied and then it's change is permanent (as in breaking a glass into shards). Look into some of the studies of solid-state physics for more information on it and some really interesting studies using glass, gases and light.

i was just reading this lately:  "A glass[y material] is formed when a molten material is cooled so rapidly that its atoms are trapped in nearly the same positions as in the liquid.  These supercooled liquids, by definition, possess an amorphous or glassy structure.  For most liquids, the cooling rate necessary to produce a glass is so high that these substances do not occur naturally.  For others, however, such as common sand (silica), a very modest cooling rate will result in the amorphous structure.  Obsidian is an eample of a naturally forming silica glass."  (Why Things Break, Mark E. Amorphous means the atoms of the material are oriented randomly.

"Solid" and "liquid" are just vaguly defined words drawn from early observations of matter.  Glass may be seen as either.

If you have to make an argument for it to those that this isn't readily apparent to, I'd suggest showing a resonnance structure and arguing the metaphorical parallel between the two.

Still, I hope your instructors are only trying to inspire students to come to this yconclusion on their own.  If your instructors argue either, I would urge you not adopt any axiomatic concepts from them.

Status: offline 		Ice is technically a liquid also, it just flows very slowly.  Just observe an ice sculupture after a few weeks of near zero weather(no melting at all).  It will have changed significantly, under its own weight.

I had a difference of opinion with a science teacher in Jr High School over this very issue...he taught that glass was a liquid via the window theory and I knew better... needless to say (in part due to my approach),  I did not become his favorite student.

Status: offline 		I was always told by my chemistry teacher told me that glass was a liquid, but that it moved reeeeeeeeeeally slowly. Of course, she taught chemistry, so...

Most glass isn't supercooled, so I'd lean toward considering it a solid. Then again, I was a history major, so what do I know?
