HotFaerieMama -> RE: About Goth (10/4/2007 8:35:16 PM)

i'm goth.. i always have been .. i don't wear whiteface cuz i'm pale enough to not need it.. i don't always wear make up... hell i hardly ever wear make up but i do wear a lot of black and a shitload of purple...  ( my fave color) goths come in every shape and size.. as do the rest of the world.. we are just a bit more dark. .. .just my 2 cents... if you want more then ask me.. i'm too lazy to type it all out...

DiurnalVampire -> RE: About Goth (10/4/2007 8:39:32 PM)

I was goth before GOTH was goth.
I stopped dressing that way when everyone else started.
I still wear mostly black, I still wear fishnets and boots and all, but it has nothing to do with that.
I just like how it looks...

FangsNfeet -> RE: About Goth (10/4/2007 9:04:38 PM)

The Gothic Scene of today's time has an appeal due to a certain mystery with each individual person. You never know what each Goth is into other than they view the world on a darker side and have a fasination with Vampire Movies.

If nothing else, it's the varity of style that makes today's Gothic Culture attractive.
Besides, I can't think of anyone who does not look good in black.

Think of all the music the Gothic culture listens to. Goths varity of music ranges all the way from Classical to Death Metal. A Goth can watch Phantom of The Opera and then dash off to a Marilyn Manson concert and have no questions ask about his music preference or integrity.

Now let's talk about today's Gothic style. With cloths, a Goth can dress in a  Black Tux with slick hair or he can wear shorts, a fish net shirt, shades, pale make up, and have spiked purple hair. Either way, it's all dark and mysterious.

Some like being Shockers or Anti Conformist while others endulge of being a Loner. Either way, the gothic world is open for everyone to be as dark, mistique, sensual, imaginative, morbid, expressive, and self thinking as you can be.

Unfortunatly, the Gothic Culure does have it's snobs. From time to time you'll see the "So, you think you're a real goth? Whatever! You'll never know what it really means to live my Life Style." Attitude. After all, some can not except that there are other people like them in the world.

Goth became goth some time in1981 when the term 'goth' was first applied to the blossoming music scene.
At that age most people wear whatever their parents buy them.

Thanks for the laugh.

As for the appeal of the lifestyle, I can see it. There is just something, almost narcissistic, about embracing the darker, sensual, side of things in which all the senses are engaged. It’s the difference between making love in the bedroom versus making love in a cemetery, on a cool autumn night. The slight chill of the air making each other’s bodies that more hot, the musty smell of the earth combining with the intoxicating, musky, smell of sex, the rustling of dead leaves adding a chorus to your increasing moans and grunts of passion while the pale moonlight illuminates all in different hues of shadow. All the time an audience of the dead must bear silent witness to your primal celebration of life itself, mocking them with your triumphant yawp of life affirming ecstacy.

Okay... I kind of drifted away there. Bottom line, I can see the appeal of the darker side of things but a weekend indulgence now and then would be more than sufficient to me. I don’t think I could live that way. As much fun as the dark can be, I think we should live in the light.

I was just wondering.... what is the attraction of the Goth lifestyle?

Fuck you, man.  You won't get my dark soul.  Woe, agony knows but my name upon its dark, lip-stick'd lips!

---

It's important to note that there's the goth clothing style and the goth lifestyle.  Those who dress goth aren't necessarily goth; many of them just like the look.

I often consider goth to be an offshoot of punk, with something of a religious twist.  I wonder if early religion was much like what goth and druidism and such is now, before the leaders became more authoritative and desired further power.

Being goth is about being self-indulgent while ignoring reason.  Its core really is religious.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: About Goth (10/4/2007 10:19:38 PM)

Same here. I think it had to do with my depression, somber attitude, and a passive way I could find my own identity. Then one day someone asked me why I liked to be Goth, and I told them I did not play in a band, but  liked Goth music. When I found out what it was, I slightly changed how I changed but still stayed with black close and sleeping during the day.

LOL!!!  that brought back a few memories...wearing all black before Woolite Dark meant occasionally re-dying all my clothes in a big vat of RIT dye on my mom's stovetop.  easy, convenient, and if the random non-black item had a stain on it, into the vat it went and became black too!

Well, you get to roam Europe, sacking cities, then settle in sunny Spain.

Sounds OK to me, but you know - work commitments, kids and so on?

Something you have to do whilst youre young I think

OMG...Lady E......there is now tea all over my computer! Thanks! LMAO!!

I personally have always had a thing for early gothic architecture....

Goths....why all the black clothing? Some say its a type of rejection of traditional ideals of  beauty, or possibly even a mourning for a miserable and dying society. Either way its more of a social protest than a declaration of religion. Most goths are open to all faiths, from Christian to jewish to muslim, busshist, wiccan, atheist, and even satanic...

As far as the Gothic "obsession" with death, the more appropriate word might be "acceptance," or "acknowledgement," or "respect." One of the reasons why the Gothic viewpoint is so foreign and frightening to most people is because it challenges the way we traditionally think about "unpleasant" things. Goths refuse to see certain things as "beautiful" simply because they're acceptable while seeing other things as "offensive" because they're unpleasant or uncomfortable to deal with. American pop culture focuses too much on the new and shiny, the bright and happy. It does not deal well--if at all--with pain, loss and death. It is a way to understand and come to terms with the darker aspects of life. The Gothic viewpoint on death is one of acceptance of the fate that awaits us all, rather than denying death, and hoping it'll just go away. Goths accept death as a natural part of life, part of the natural balance of things. This doesn't mean, however, that Goths invite death by attempting suicide or homicide--those things would upset the natural balance as much as denying death does. Instead, Goths accept and respect death for what it is--and move on.

The Gothic mentality is founded on the maxim "be thyself". Goths simply want to be allowed to exist as what they are (which is, in general, a darker, more introspective version of "normal").

Jacobthm -> RE: About Goth (10/5/2007 7:27:24 AM)

In my case I got into some of the music, and everything pretty much became utilitarian from then on out. Granted I could never pull off the waif-ish "vicky-goth" look but someone fitting my description wearing all black, eyeliner and a trenchcoat has a REAL easy time walking thorough crowded areas. It was fun for a while, plus there's a few advantages to being a goth; 1) Matching cloting is incredibly easy. 2) Black hides stains nicely, 3) Dark clothing is slimming. lol

On the downside that kind of clothing gets expenisve after a while, getting a job that does not involve music or art in some way is nigh impossible and things became a hell of a lot more complicated after the Columbine "incident."

That said, I'm still so gothic I shit bats.

I've noticed that if one labels anything religious or spiritual it justifies it beyond question.
