Hi, So the premise would be a website that conveys information in a condensed place? Would it be an anything goes community or one more focused on building/remoldeling? How do you see yourself attracting the best in any field to contribute to your site? How would you verify their qualifications? Is anybody doing it now? How can you do it better? Will you offer an affiliate program? Just some questions that popped into my head as I read your post, perhaps a clearer picture of what you see this community doing, being, having would help. As far as forum software the one collarchat uses is one of a few out there. There are others that are excellent too. You can find out the cost of ASPPlayground.NET right on their site. Hope that helps. quote:
ORIGINAL: Termyn8or This is especially a question for the people who run this site, have anything to do with it and members, actually anyone who uses a website with a forum (ummmmm, this is all of us). Throughout the week, discussions with a few friends have festered a few ideas. Another and I were talking about the value of money, and as polite as this guy normally is I had to shut him up and say my piece. Money is not wealth, the wealth is created by We The People and converted to money by rich people. I wnt to form a union of people with meaningful skills, focussing on building etc., and having departments. Now this is a tall order. I think I am up to it if I can K.I.S.S. Targeting people with real world skills, I mean able to hunt, fish, build a house, fix a car, all kinds of shit like that. Some people might say that lawyers do not belong, but I beg to differ at this point. After consideration, anyone, no matter how carefully the live their life could get jammed up in our sticky legal system. There would be categories and betcha believe that you need to be a member to write posts, like CM. And this is another point, is my beloved Mod11 watching now ? I'd like to model it somehat after CM, and even maybe use the same software. I believe what we are in is "aspplaygroud" or something like that. I am sure it costs money to buy or lease, but I wonder how much. There would be subsections just like here, there would be moderators just like here. It would be public but you need to be a member to post, just like here. But there would be one difference. Well more than one, but this new site would be ad hoc something else so it would have to be a bit different. First of all it is intended to be an educational site, because I think that when one seeks knowledge it should be provided by those with said knowledge. I think it is an obligation we have to our neighbors, friends, and to some degree, everyone. This would not be kinky or anything, but would provide information for those wishing to better themselves, or in the case of people who are masters in their field, would desire to help those who wish to better themselves. I think this is a worthy endevor, a buddy of mine wants to put a section in that debunks religion, OK, I am all for it. If your faith is strong enough, it shouldn't bother you, but when a carpenter NOT a plumber tells you not to get one of those 24 hour new bathrooms, he can tell you why. I saw the commercial with the broad screaming when she saw the tub, and that they can just cover it all up. That is ridiculous. Then they show someone supposedly tearing it out. They instill the want to have it done right away, Americans can't seem to wait for anything and they capitalize on that. So they cover up this waterlogged, mildew infested shit in your wall with nice pretty plastic. Even the tub. Now just how long do you think the airtight seal is going to last ? Eventually that all will have to be torn out as well as the original shit. And even if you don't smell it in the bathroom, "behind the walls" it can travel. And you better watch your weight, my neighbor has that fucking junk, and the bottom of the tub is cracked. Do you have any idea how hard that is to fix ? Also, it should've never happened. Many years ago people WITH BRAINS figured out that tubs should be made of metal. Back then, there was never a problem. OK, so shit like this goes on that website. I think a few people here at least would like it, but there is no kink, strictly business and that side of life. Seperated into categories. Moderated of course, no flaming unless someone is about to do something really stupid, but there would be two differences other than specifics in structure between it and CM. I have given this alot of thought and do not take it lightly. Members would be charged, and some have said so much a month and all that, but I have arrived at a figure of $48 per year. I told the person who postulated higher fees "No, it is easier to get one dollar each out of a million people than it is to get a million dollars from one". BUT, with that $48 comes rights. Now this is a site where you are not afraid of discovery, contact details CAN be put in posts, in fact "we" know who you are before you become a member. What's more, all members are invited to vote on a new candidate's eligibility for membership. That's right, people who apply must answer some questions, questions about their supposed field of expertise, and others read it. Among other things there will be an essay question, and that is where an applicant really makes his mark. Others get the impression either that "Yup, we want this person around" or "Nope". With these "features" all of the problems of a message board should be solved, or seriously abated. I think this is a winning idea, but not in the sense you might think. The dues pay upkeep, I'll do some work to get it going, but I am not made of money. And, I do not really intend to make money. Say it's $48 a year, with a thousand members you think I would be raking in $48,000 a year, but that is not so. That would basically keep it going. I would need a part time IT pro at about $80 an hour for certain things, and this is where the more I learn the better off I am. There are fees for everything, the domain name, the hosting, and for the uninitiated, you don't run a website like this just paying AOL $23.90 a month. (pretty sure most of you know that, but for the few...) Even if I had my own servers, I doubt SBC would let me do it, I got what they call DSL, but DSL is really ASDL and it just wouldn't work all that well even if I could. These are end user ISPs, and usually can't handle something like this. Yes, you can have a whole website, but if you want chat or forum functions things change quickly. I hate to even bring this up, but there are ways to make it work without dues. People advertising tools, equipment or education, this would almost be a target market for them. Movies and videogames, well, might not do so well. But the site would have to be up and running to attract the desirables. That's anaother thing I just thought if. If I get the software and really do this, I will be the first member, and will have the only vote on the next member. Hmmmmm. Just a thought. Yours ? T
