without a clue where Manchester is,

E

Everyone knows where Manchester is; there are tribes in the deepest, darkest, least penetrable forests of South America who fully understand where Manchester is. 'Just the way it is; what's that saying about respect being earned, and greatness being bestowed by others......well, if memory serves, the authors had Manchester in mind.

To be fair, I'd be struggling to pin point New York and wouldn't have a clue where the likes of Ohio is; I suppose the same applies the other way.

the state and state capitals, must be left over from the 1700s/1800s when the colonies -became states and spread west/south per the frontier.

being we are global- Ild say it is more important to know about different cultures; a general idea where they are at.  The post about war is our geography lesson- yikes- but true.

Re: Sri Lanka- I did not know there were tigers there. [I doubt that post was meant to offend anyone]
I think it floods often there- im guessing it is not too far from India.

A 6th grader here thought Chicago was a state.

its complex PA. First point I'd make is that the IRA and Sinn Fein aint daft - they know that the Catholic population - which is generally the more republican and from whom they draw their support, is set to outnumber the Protestant population - generally loyal to the crown as descendants of British settlers, in the near future due to differing birth rates. Democracy therefore becomes a more interesting means of achieving their ends than shooting and bombing.

its even more complex with the troubles over there. Its not generally well known that the recent troubles - 1969 on, arose because the Protestants, who controlled everything and treated the Catholics as second class, beat the crap out of Catholic protesters for civil rights, marching with the inspiration of the civil rights movement in the US. Naturally this grew into tit for tat, and the British army was sent over to protect the Catholics would you believe, in the first instance. Well, the IRA (mark 2 as the original was the force which gained independence for the Republic) were a bit better at tit for tat than anyone thought possible, and the army ended up fighting them.

But it goes back way before all this to the Jacobite Rebellion. William of Orange (William III of England, invited to take the throne in favour of James II, a Catholic) beat the daylights out of the Irish Jacobites in the late 17th century, after the Irish Jacobites had beaten hell out of British settlers in Ireland - not without cause maybe as they'd taken land from the natives and were imposing Protestantism. Note - many of these settlers were Scots, just as rabidly anti-Catholic as any English Protestant - though of course, the Scots dont like this pointed out! From this time comes the "Marching Season" when Protestants basically tour the country, beating drums, waving flags and intimidating Catholics with the unspoken threat of "try that again and you'll get the same". Leads to a lot of trouble even today.

But before that was Cromwell around 50 years earlier who toured Ireland to hunt down Royalist sympathisers who had fled there and those native Irish who had supported King Charles I and II. Apparently he did a lot of sacking, slaughter and so on - which obviously didnt please the locals very much.

And before that the Normans had a few adventures over in Ireland too.

Its always been a strange relationship and a strained one I'd say. On the one hand it was always the case that we recruited Irish armies to help out in whatever war - even before we ruled the place, but on the other hand we feared the threat from over the sea that this brought with it.

E

And if some of the posters on this thread had their way, nobody would know any of this aside from a few solitary historians working away in dusty libraries because, according to them, this information isn't relevant to their day-to-day lives.

Speaking as an auto didact lol it sometimes seems to me that the one does not necessarily follow the other.
It all depends on the control reference for brightness !

I pinched <auto didact> from someone's profile here on CM. Wrote and congratulated her on its use I did.

I bet I have a better knowledge of the location of US states than I do of the UK counties. Wonder why that is ?

All Americans know that Alaska is an island between LA and Hawaii....

Alaska is HUGE. It almost touches Rushia. Ild love to see it!

BTW- it gets colder in Chicago, Minneapolis, Bismark ND; then in Juneau Alaska.  [nestled between the sea and mountains]

Yeah, I'm gripped by suspense; 'trembling, in fact. Come on then Seeks, how have you acquired this wealth of knowledge? and can you tell me how many people in Oregon voted for the Republicans in 1978?

Personally, I actually know where most (I switch a few here and there) of the states are. I have traveled through so many of them coming and going in the last few years, my knowledge has gotten much better.
I know a good bit about Europe, since Angel travels there.
I know Australia and England becasue I have had pen pals there since I was in elementary school.
Dont ask me state capitols, I havent a clue. Dont really care, either. I am not a gov't type so they dont mean a thing and since I passed those tests in school all that time ago I'll never need them again.
HOWEVER as a kick, Angel and I know pretty much ever good roller coaster amusement park in the states and keep talking about travel plans to see them.
Its sad, people dont actually know the geography, but you can ask most kids what sports teams are from what cities and states, and that they know. Just dont ask them to find them on a map.

LOL politesub, platform 8 at watford junction, goes straight to manchester picadilly, takes a while tho, or at least it used to.

As for geography in school Im afraid to say that all my geography teachers were complete plonkers with about as much enthusiasm for the subject as a dead puppy.  Having to colour and draw maps of europe and africa freehand didnt help matters as I cant draw a stick man without him looking like he's broken all the bones in his body......but was quite good at finding places on the atlas,or planning a route on a map..... main cities, neighbouring countries, but never in class, that was taught by my parents and good old encyclopedia britannica  (my dad worked for the printing company and we got a "free set")
The only place I ever learned about in any depth at school was canada, which turned out well as I moved here 20 years ago.
Geography doesnt suck the teachers do!!! well in my case anyway

I say Burma.

quote:

I'm watching CNN in Beijing, which keeps tut-tutting President Bush for saying "Burma," rather than "Myanmar," in his just-completed UN speech, as if this were merely another of his gaffes.

I'm with Bush. For nearly twenty years, since first visiting the country during the violent protests in 1988, I've followed arguments about the twists and turns of what to call the country in Burmese. The complications mainly involve what the various names say about the relations between the Burmese people proper and other ethnic groups within the nation.

But when it comes to referring to the nation in English, there's little debate. Myanmar is the name invented 18 years ago by the benighted junta, known as SLORC* back then and the State Peace and Development Council now, when it seized power through force. When Westerners say "Myanmar," they're not being culturally respectful to the people of a beautiful but oppressed nation. (We don't call China Zhongguo or Germany Deutschland just because the locals do.) They're bowing to the whims of the generals who still imprison Aung San Suu Kyi.

There is no reason to humor them. Say Burma, as George Bush did. And CNN, grow some backbone when it comes to terminology!

Sri Lanka...has jungles...Sri Lanka is off the coast of India...the little tear drop shaped island (no, it's NOT a part of India)...yes, they have tigers....the Tigers i was speaking of were a terrorist organzation akin to al Queda, called the Tamil Tigers...the comparison i was making is that my ethnic group is the Sinhalese....which means "the lion people" in Sanskrit...Tigers...lion people...Tigers...lion people...offensive...yea...very dry humor back...

most of us didn't know where Vietnam was until they showed it on the tv news every night.

i remember taking geography class in high school in which we had to correctly label every nation on a map for homework - meaning we had to trek to the library and research.  these days everything is computerized and you'll hardly find a kid researching the "old fashion" way (searching in the encyclopedias).

if an American cannot find it on the computerized map, then they have little concern for that country.

He probably means we are supposed to care as one human cares for another. As WE would want them to care about US.  which they undoubtedly would but wouldn't do anything because fighting is against their religious beliefs.  So they need a "Billy Jack" for example to step in and kick butt.
Most of us don't care where they are.  That's not important.  They could be on Mars - they still need help.
I'll get a lot of guff for this but I believe if a country is strong enough and can help, that it should.

lol, fair enough, Seeks, the incite is appreciated, as per usual.

Well, you may have a point, here, although I'm well past the stage of my life when a "knee-trembler" was good enough, but the lack of a good woman, I grant you.
