I have been actively reading this board for 4+ months now. I try to contribute when I think I have something pertenant to add to the discussion.

One of the things I do not like and will risk getting the hounds unleash on me is the old "we done this topic before" or "this topic has been done to death". Well the fact is new people come to this board every day. It is incredibly unrealistic for them to go through the pages and pages and pages of topics that can date back years.

Then if a new person has the gaul to post to an old thread out comes the messages "why are you posting to this old thread".

I would think the owners, moderators and some members would want to encourage new member to participate. Fresh perspectives and ideas are usually universally applauded in life. It may make some things repetitive but I have some advice for those who do not like that:

Don't read the thread! You are not required to reply to every thread that is placed on the message board!

Now I will prepare to get ripped to shreads...

LOL you aren't going to get ripped to shreads. That is unless you would want us to.

You do make a valid point. I usually encourage ppl to read the first two pages before making a whole new thread. As for going back 20 plus pages, I don't expect it. When it comes to replying to it, sometimes it might be best to send a personal message to the person. With all aside, new people are usually given a break and are only told about the situation in a polite manner.

Either way, when a new thread / question is posted that's been discussed more than a few times, luckily we have proud sub to point out the old threads. And some of us do give a little input. It's just that sometimes, I get tired of repeating myself over and over again.

Yeah, some people can be rude - but seriously, how much effort does it take to use the 'search' feature? You don't have to "go through the pages and pages and pages of topics that can date back years" to find a topic. As for the topic that I believe you to be currently posting in reference to - the attitude of the OP has a lot to do with how we react to it. If they are polite, they typically get a "hey, we've talked about this before, check out XY and Z threads about it" ... if they aren't, that's when they get the less polite "this topic has been done to death."

I have only rarely seen someone reply to a new post on an old thread as you have stated - mostly I see "wow, this thread is still around ... " followed by "my thoughts on the topic haven't changed" or "my thoughts on the topic are now ABC"

I think it has a lot to do with the topic. If it is a whine or complaint... different story. And if it is a subject that has been discussed over and over, like Fangs said, we have proudsub, a wealth of topic links, to help you out in your search.

New people come in almost daily and I agree, we should be willing to hear their input on old subjects... in fact, sometimes it sparks a totally different angle on it.

We've done the "we've done this topic before" topic before.

My point I was trying to make was very poorly written in regards to someone posting a reply to an old topic. I agree with you that I have not seen it regularly happen, but that is not my point.

My point was new people should have the right to post an opinion or story and get feedback or fresh ideas if they are interested. To just search old posts or a private message is not condusive to that experience.

It just seems to me there is a significant group of people in here who feel the need to comment on every single topic and I just do not understand why their preferences take precedent. If a topic has been done or is rude, do not reply. The new topic will die of natual causes, but let new people and others express their thoughts in a current thread if they desire.

P.S.

Big LOL Lordandmaster! I will go do a search right now.

LOL, Thought the same thing.
StJohnSub Mostly we get annoyed with people who come whining... Otherwise listening, putting your $.02, etc. doesn't get you spanked (not a painful one anyway). M

stjo, just did it earlier today in another thread. I did go on and expand for the benefit of the op in that thread. I haven't done it much but there is a search function on the boards that can be used to "bone" up on the topic beforehand. I didn't know about it until Emeraldslave pointed that out to someone in again another thread.

Just letting them know there are research tools available. If they read through and the questions are answered good. Some topics have been literally beat to pieces and usually end up going down the very same track as previous ones on the same topic.

So far so good for you. Haven't been thrown to the dogs yet. LOL

I'll help you out, but these are not the exact same topic as this thread:

message board etiquette

search feature (how to do a search)

a challenge of sorts

Actually, if they only would show the gaul it would be okay.

Seriously, I agree with M. Its not so much that an old topic is raised, but that fact that someone bursts into the message boards with a loud whine. If it happend only once or twice it would be overlooked but there is a pattern of people who never read the message boards suddenly decided that they want to complain about the profiles. So they head over here to vent their spleen without trying to get to establish a reputation first.

But you are right, we are reacting emotionally to their emotional outburst and it would be good to have more patience.

I find that lately we have been -very- polite in saying "welcome to the boards, you might want to try searching for this post, as it's been talked about before."

For a while, there was a trend to verbally bitch slap people. I think we've stopped doing that, and saying polietly that this has been done before is not a bad thing.

When i first joined i had lotssssssssss of questions and i had several people tell me that this topic has already been discussed . i had no idea how to search for topics when i joined because i wasn't familure with the site. Also, i wouldn't have thought to look through the pages anyways because there are so many pages. i love it when newbies come on here with questions that have already been answered in similar threads. The same people dont always reply and it's nice to see what others have to say. In my opinion it's just no big deal and if someone has a problem with it they dont need to reply. They need to read the book "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" .

New to posting here but not on other sites. Many times when new faces show up, topics that you believe not discussed are usually discussed in the past. Those that have been here longer do seem to notice this trend and, for me... I can either read them and offer thoughts on it if (to me) it's a worth while topic.... or I'll storm troop in with my martini in hand, take a seat and see how other's reply... or hell.. I may even ignore the thread all together...

Isn't the internet nice since we have all of these options? ;)

if old threads aren't to be commented on, maybe the people who run this website should remove the "Post Reply" button on any thread that has become boring to all the regulars here....
