Freud believed that there were five psychosexual stages of development including oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital and each of them is connected with a different stage of physical development. There is a conflict in each stage, if the child has trouble working through this conflict, a fixation can occur.
This fixation can either be "positive" or "negative." This means that it can either cause someone to have either a fetish or a revultion with the particular stage of psychosexual development.

1. Oral - Usually occurs between ages 0-2, the pleasure source during this phase is the mouth and pleasure is obtained through sucking, biting and swallowing. The conflict that occurs during this stage is weaning (originally from the mother's breast, but later from bottles). In other words, if a child has difficulty in weaning, they may develop an oral fixation.

2. Anal - Usually occurs between ages 2-4. The pleasure source during this time is the anus and is obtained through defecating or retaining feces. The conflict in this stage is toilet training. If an individual is punished too much during toilet training an anal fixation may occur.

3. Phallic - Ages 4-5, with the pleasure source being the genitals. The conflict here is the Oedipus Complex for boys and the Electra Complex for girls (I can explain these too if anyone needs). Penis envy is also said to take place during this stage

4. Latency - Ages 6-puberty. During this time sexual feelings are avoided by spending a great amount of time and energy on hobbies and sports. There is thought that this stage is becoming smaller and smaller and may someday eliminated.

5. Genital - Puberty onward. During this time the physical changes in the body causes the sexual urges to reappear. At this time people begin to become sexually attracted to others. The conflict here is social rules, meaning that if a person has trouble with social rules they may develop strange sexual habits that are outside the social norm.


This information can be found all over the internet and in thousands of books on psychology. This particular information is from my brain and three years of developmental psychology classes.
