deadscout -> sterile urine (10/6/2007 4:16:09 AM)

I was reading a post discussing whether urine was sterile or not and though I would add something that I found interesting. This actually has to do with a disease called diabetes. One symptom of diabetes is frequent and large amounts of urine. This is caused by sugar building up in the blood and causing a lot of urine. Now, with that said, there are two main diseases that cause a person to pee a lot...Diabetes which is caused by high blood sugar and diabetes insipidus which is caused by a problem with your glands. With diabetes, there is sugar in your urine and with diabetes insipidus, there is no sugar in your urine. The word insipidus is derived from a greek word meaning "without taste". For hundreds or maybe thousands of years, doctors were able to differentiate between diabetes and diabetes insipidus by tasting a persons urine. One was sweet and one was insipidous or "without taste".
