EmeraldSlave2 -> Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/26/2005 11:53:28 PM)

Not mine, but I love the truth and poingancy. Other thoughts/reflections/reactions?

People in this "lifestyle" take great delight in trying to tell others what is or is not possible. Usually anything that is more demanding than they are willing to deal with is "fantasy", and anything less demanding is a "game".

DublinSwitch -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 3:05:32 AM)

Agree 100%...for what is a kinky activity and outside the normal conventions of society the amount of prejudice / snobbishness / labeling other people is unbelievable.

Community my ass - more often reflects a group of nosey elderly neighbours bitching about the 'new' people that moved in to No. 3 seven years ago...

Cheers

DS

WOW.

I'd say that summed up a lot of opinions I've come across on these boards.

I agree and it applies to a whole bunch of stuff outside of WIITWD as well. I am always shocked when I hear people say something is impossible because it doesn't fit within their schema or realm of understanding...

Take out "lifestyle" & replace it with "life" and it is universal.

I am just as guilty when it comes to the 'fantasy" declaration.

A good thing to remind myself of first thing in the am. Thanks.

Good quote ES2 - but that's perfect DS.

I love this, thank you!!! Excellent, something to ponder today, hmmm! [:)]

MsPurrmeow -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 9:43:41 AM)

This quote explains a lot about the hostility that plagues many communities. The problem is... people refuse to believe they are casting these judgements. I know that years ago, I thought a lot of things were fantasy that have become reality after experience. Heck, a good portion of my life I can tell the truth about, and people believe they are reading about a fantasy.

This is very eye-opening. I admit that I have, in the past, made the same judgements. I'm learning not to, though. We all have to learn and grow, and I am merely a mortal. It's about perception, and judgements must be made from a persons experiences. Even with no ill-will, we have to make certain decisions about what we read and hear. We just need to remember that everything looks different when seen, spoken or felt from a different point of view.

Thank you for bringing this to us. May I ask who the author is?

LOL it's Ken, aka SoulHuntre, of The Estate. Despite whatever other flaws he has, he does occasionally have keen insight into the sub-culture at large.

Kinkypupper -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 11:12:41 AM)

I disagree with this. I am sorry but I do.
One of the nice things about this lifestyle is the diversity and acceptance.
You can be at a "event" where within 20 ft. there are 2 sub females ,1 sub male,
a Sissy girl serving food, A naked girl on the floor crawling from person to person, and in the corner someone in intricate rope bondage. Mix with that 4 or 6 people talking about the weather.

It maybe a regional or local thing but I am sorry I do NOT see that around here at all.
Everyone I have associated with who are not "wannabes" are true honest people with acceptance for all flavors and types.

Do you actually read these boards? I would say that in general, most people here are very accepting. If they weren't I wouldn't post here as regularly as I do. But there is a certain amount of people, passers by and regulars who have very strong opinions of how things should be and they aren't afraid to say it. So if you aren't seeing it, I believe it might be because you are turning a blind eye to it. Because it is here.

The mere fact that you referred to some people who might like to have been included in this community as wannabes is exactly what Em's quote was about. Who are you to call them wannabes? On what grounds do you call them wannabes? Think about it...

Fawne -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 5:54:11 PM)

Wow.. Thanks, a mind bender!

I believe that quote to be absolutely correct. One can only truly know one's own reality. So, what is one's truth, may not, or cannot be realized by another. Hmmn..

But, if even to be devil's advocate, would it reason that :

Ok, as this relates to messege boards: This is a MB. If MBs have some trolls (x). CM is a MB, so would contain some x?
In other words, (because I am so not a math person) Even if most CM posters are expressing thier reality, there is a probabilty that there are some who are not!
<boggled mind.. scream>

blackwolf99 -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 6:40:29 PM)

Now go post this quote on the 15 page(last I looked) rant and rage thread about Gorean lifestyle.

It fits so appropriately there

Your math is perfect. Now, combining your theorem with the original quote gives us two corollaries:

1 -- Even if there were no trolls on the message board, there would be people who believed some were indeed trolls/fakes/phonies or whatever you want to call 'em.
2 -- The ones who are the "trolls" consider the others to be trolls as well

Ain't math fun!

perverseangelic -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/27/2005 7:03:36 PM)

*applauds*

This fits almost perfectly with the last entry I made in my journal here.

One "but".
I've noticed that people have a tendancy to read a personal statement of dislike as a blanket condemnation. For example, I feel that I shoudl be able to say "I, personally, dislike this practice" WITHOUT it being read as "I believe this practice is evil, horrid and shouldn't be done." One thing I wish, in addition to the hope that people could just let people do what they want, is that we could be allowed to make personal statements of dislike or disagreement without them being seen as blanket, accross the board judgements.

I believe it's possible to personally disagree with an ideology while understanding how it can work for others, and accepting that personal disagreement doesn't make it any righter or wronger than what works for the individaul. It's frustrating to be called judgemental when I express personal disagreement.

Fawne -> RE: Interesting BDSM Quote for Thought (7/28/2005 6:59:22 AM)

Happy P: You are so right!

This place is fun, made better by thoughtful topics such as this (TY EM2).

My having RL experience, I am aware, have witnessed, even participated in things some wouldn't believe. So... all I do believe, I do believe.. in you!

and maybe I'll even think twice before becoming a member of the safety patrol squad ;)
