I think in order to make money, you have to build a reputation and really know what you're doing. I have no idea what's involved with licensing or whatnot. That would be dependent on your local area.

You had better check into codes and liscensing first. Talk to some tatoo people in your area and find out what they need to do to be legal. Regardless of money exchanged there may very well be some restrictions.

they can do them in prison with a staple and pen ink. so right there i am sure i can do better.

I don't think convicts are all that concerned with either A) high quality tatoos B) legal tatoos or C) medically safe tatoos

Can $ be made as a tattoo artist?  I bet if you asked the folks on Miami Ink or LA Ink...the answer would be 'most definitely!'.

But like many other artists...it takes 'being discovered' for your talent to make money.  I owned and worked as a cook in several restaurants and while people raved about my food I never made any real money (or the right to call myself a chef, really (in my mind).  Same goes for my stint as a massage therapist, yet there are those who make it big doing that or as exercise gurus and such.

I believe to be at the top of such a game, many things must work together.  Tattoo artists are, first of all...artists.  The good ones actually draw; are capable of replicating a photo onto someone's arm, or at the very least hand-drawing some rendition of the customer's wish onto a body part and knowing how to use ink to blend the graphic against a not-so-flat 'canvas'.

Perhaps it is like asking if money can be playing football?  We all know the answer is yes...but then we must also ask; what are the chances?

In addition, there are laws about sanitation and preventing health risks inherent with 'blood work'.  You could not 'build your business' enough to make real $ unless you were licensed.

Just my take on things.
B

highly trained professionals without a license have a hard time getting more than $10 an hour.....you'd be better off working at McD's...
those prison tattoo artists don't get paid....

Some GREAT replies.

Maybe I will pose this question: here goes; what can I do to earn a few extra bucks,,,at my own pace or time, maybe from home.  I dont want to sell Amway or Avon.

I can say for sure I'd never go to a hack without a license who has no credentialing to back him up...I want to see pictures of his work, see his drawings and see his autoclave and sterilization processes.....

LadyLynx -> RE: can $ be made as tattoo artist? (10/7/2007 8:52:21 AM)

lol actually working fast food is worse, they don't even get $10 an hour, unless they are management

So there i am sitting at home and wondering .. "hmm what can i do to make money?", an ephiphany occurs .. "Oh yeah, i could become a tattoo artist!!!" "Seriously, they do it in prison so how hard can it really be?" [sm=ofcourse.gif]

Seriously, i have a very talented brother who is an Artist and please note i capitalized Artist.  Skin inkers, the good ones, have a talent for drawing on the flesh that is unlike any other canvas in the world. It isn't just a matter of being able to draw, or trace as the amateur inkers do, but also of being able to ply your trade to a difficult medium and make the picture come alive. My brother specializes in portraits, bring him your photo and what you get in return is a lifelong rendition of whatever in a realistic and almost 3D styling.

So, to ponder that perhaps you could make a few bucks as a tattoo artist while you sit at home is just plain ridiculous. But, i do have a suggestion for you, find out if you have any talent for drawing first and then if you do, create a portfolio and take it to a good tattoo Artist and have them look at it. Who better to advise on it than one who does it? In the meantime .. you may wish to rethink the Amway profession, i hear it is a money maker [:-]

Not the folks down at the health department... I believe that many places require a state license and sterile precautions, if you are going to receive any form of compensation.

And then you are facing the classic starving artist scenario, while you try to build a paying clientele.

I have read about phone sex operators. You can do that from your home, pick your schedule, no money investment, and the demand for male phone sex operators is extremely high, I hear.

Maybe you can find a shop that will take you on as an apprenticed and there you could build a rep.I do know a girl that does great work in Grey's and black that works from home and yes she does barter her work...Its like any thing else pa experience makes money....bounty

georgejames68 -> RE: can $ be made as tattoo artist? (10/7/2007 12:12:55 PM)

Yup, can be done, my nephew does it and makes good money, but..... it took years to get established, and extreme care with sterilization etc. And he has accumulated about $300,000 in equipment to be able to do the job correctly! So much for ink and staples!!!

LaTigresse -> RE: can $ be made as tattoo artist? (10/7/2007 2:53:31 PM)

I am tossing my vote in with the phone sex operator crowd. No startup costs and no licensing (as far as I am aware of anyway....)

chellekitty -> RE: can $ be made as tattoo artist? (10/7/2007 2:58:37 PM)
