http://www.iihs.org/laws/cellphonelaws.aspx PA is rumoured to have a no driving while on cell phone law- statewide. I am against it- because existing law allows one to be cited for "being distracted".  Does anyone know how I can rig up a cb to BE a cell phone?  A cb is talking too.

LadyEllen -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 1:12:42 PM)

The issue I have with this is that it is yet another law written with the idea that we are all complete idiots, when we know who are the risk people with things like cell phones in cars - the same idiots who cant use turn signals, dont understand roundabouts and generally drive to the standard one might expect of a chimpanzee. Indeed, the same idiots whose behaviour in general is on a par with a chimpanzee in all aspects of their lives.

I fail to see how it can be that a 22 year police officer can be perfectly safe to drive at high speeds using a two way radio, when I at 40, with 22 years driving experience am reckoned a potential disaster to use a phone in a car with automatic transmission driving under the speed limit. Or indeed to eat a sandwich, or (the latest one in the UK), to smoke a cigarette whilst driving in a safe manner as I have done for 22 years without accident, incident or conviction.

I'm getting pretty sick of being legislated against on the basis of the fact I live in a country full of people who shouldnt be allowed out without adult supervision.

I once denounce a bus driver who was using his cell phone during his working shift.
I hope they got him to quit the job, that's quite dangerous.
So i would support a law like that, but i'm sorry i cannot help in this case!

ok i know that you may all have thouts about the wya i feel about this
I  think its a good law for the areas that have it but dont saport it
You cant always pull over to use your phone and somtimes things just cant wait

earthycouple -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 1:26:18 PM)

my personal question is ok...for those people who think speaking on a cell is dangerous (not talking dialing here)  but speaking... why isn't two way radio and CB usage dangerous then?  CBs have been in truck rigs and some passenger vehicles for more years than I've been alive...

and as someone who used to own one herself...don't try to tell me that those conversations are usually limited to a few minutes...I've heard others and myself have personally driven hundreds of miles with an ongoing conversation

what can I say...with a CB handle like "Purple Passion" people tend to like ya *ahem*...cripes...what a geek I am.

i dont plan on complaining. [it wont do any good]

-Lady E, compelling point, you make.

FullCircle -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 1:51:32 PM)

A lot of accidents involve someone talking on a phone that is fact. Hands free phones are ok but if you are driving one handed and the unexpected happens in front of you are you in the best position to react with one hand occupied? In my opinion CB radio should also be banned and all other activities that distract the driver from driving. Remember you can drive as safely as you like but can you account for the idiots that pull out in front of you?

LadyEllen -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 2:05:46 PM)

I understand the point youre making FC, but if we are to say that laws should be passed to provide for no distractions to drivers then we will have to start removing radios and CD players from cars, insist that children be carried in sound proof capsules in the rear with an attendant nanny to look after them and windows must be kept shut so that insects cannot enter.

The real issue is the idiots in front of you and that we seem to have this idea that there are such things as accidents where the idiot is not to blame. The only exception to this is shunts into the rear of standing traffic - but again, if one is the sort of idiot who drives too close to the car in front, it doesnt matter if one is on a cellphone or not, one will still not be able to stop in time.

i drive while using my cell phone & don't have a hands-free device currently...i also drive a semi & have been known to use the cb, the phone &/or eat a meal while driving down the road...i'm also capable of tossing all of that over my shoulder or even out the window at a moment's notice should i need both hands to avoid an incident...& i don't do these things in town, in traffic, etc...i have been driving for 45 years now & the only times i have even come close to an incident or accident has been when some fool tries to occupy the same space i am in at the same time...i have to agree with Lady E about legislation which i call the "i are stoopid" laws...driving is a privilege, not a right, & too many people hit the roads without the skills necessary for such a complex task.....

ShhImNotHere -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 2:34:53 PM)

Well what about putting on make up while driving,
playing with the radio (changing stations/CD's, volume, etc),
being distracted by others in the vehicle (children, friends, etc).

Some people are responsible drivers, some will NEVER be responsible drivers (even without distractions).

I too drove a truck for more years then I care to think about. And if you are eating a meal while driving down the highway then you are the very people that are the reason we need all the "i are stupid" laws!!!!

And at least with a LAW forbiding you to talk on your phone while driving, when you kill someone while doing it, you can at least be charged with murder and taken off the road for good!

missturbation -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 4:37:03 PM)

The issue is having one hand off the steering wheel to talk on your cell / mobile.
Answer - get a hands free kit you tight ass [:D]

thank you for sharing your opinion...i appreciate it...just that i know what i can & can't do while driving & i don't feel that legislating these things will keep people from stupidly killing other people while distracted...my focus is on my driving, not on the phone call...i often miss what people say or say, "gotta go" & toss the phone because the driving conditions warrant it...

i prefer fewer laws & more personal responsibility...so my opinion differs.....

Lumus -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 7:27:42 PM)

Had to vote yes.  I'm not against people having to hold a conversation while driving - that's what those other seats are for, y'know, passengers who will quite likely talk to you

"So, do you think we should go over to the Smiths tonight?"
"Mooooooooooom, he's TOUCHING ME"
"...tuning into Light 93.2, and now, an oldie but goodie..." [yeah, the radio counts if you actually pay attention] [;)]

But I'm not a big fan of people who choose to take one hand off the wheel AND let themselves get caught up in a conversation that might divert their attention.  It's a double whammy - less mental focus, less physical control.  One, maybe, sure.  Both?

For those who have been driving for years, this will probably cause a few wrinkles.  I'm thinking more of the younger drivers on the roads who don't have your experience but are told they can do the same thing.

This also stems, and I freely admit it, from my dislike of cell phones.  I don't carry one because I probably wouldn't answer one if I had it.  People reach me at home; they reach me at work.  Do I want them to call me when I'm taking a nice walk?  Nahhh. [:D]  People got along well enough without cell phones twenty years ago.  If you used them for business, I could see it, but is your job so overloaded that your driving time has to be cut into?

slaveluci -> RE: do u suport laws that ban cell + driving? (10/7/2007 9:02:22 PM)

I routinely drive will holding my cell phone.  I am no more distracted by doing this than the soccer mom driving next to me in a huge-ass SUV, half-turned around in her seat distracted by her rugrats or the big guy behind me trying to eat a McDonald's extra value meal while driving.  Let's outlaw driving a HumVee full of brats or driving while eating.  For that matter, let's outlaw driving while sleepy or distracted by thoughts of that fight with your spouse or that bad day at work.  Give me a break.  Is there anything we won't legislate against?  Keep your friggin' laws off of me already[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m19.gif[/image]. ................luci

Washington recently passed a no cell phone law but will only enforce it by adding a $200+ fine to your ticket if you are on your phone when stopped for another infraction or if you cause an accident.

"A lot of accidents involve someone talking on a phone that is fact. Hands free phones are ok ..."

Interestingly, I read a study that said that a hands-free kit makes zero amount of difference.  I found that pretty funny as several states have mandated hands-free in the car.  A useless law that is hard to enforce.  Wheeee!  The reason why the hands-free doesn't make a difference is that your focus is still with the person on the phone.

To answer the poll question ... at present, I routinely talk on the phone in the car.  It's gotten to be a joke with the people I am close to.  They knnow that if I'm calling them, I'm probably on the phone.  Distantly, I realize this is a bad idea, but my good driving record lulls me into a sense of security.

I'd love to see data about cell phone usage and accidents.  If there was convincing data, I might support creating laws about driving and cell phones if it were in conjuction with a public service campaign (so that it would actually make a difference).  I remember in the early 80s noone wore seatbelts and now I can't imagine not wearing one.

Huh?  If you called me, I'd assume you're probably on the phone.
