Anyone have experience with making one of the big X's you can chain someone up to?

I am interested in doing this.  I have access to all things mechanical and just wanted to know what are the things I need to watch out for and what are the no nos in creating this.

Thanks in advance.

If you search for it under the name St Andrews Cross you'll find lots of information.

If you are interested, I've got a variation of the saroftreve.com design that isn't as unstable (four legs vs. three).  Send me a message if you are interested.  It requires the same skills/tools.

Thanks Archer and all that have posted.  I am modifying the design I see there with the 2x6s as I think its going to be a bit unstable.  I will be using 6x6s for the cross for durability, and considering installing a thick piece of plyboard to the bottom so that it won't be moving around as much, and a weight on the backside to keep it from tipping.  With the added weight and possibly harnessing it to a wall with supports, I think this will work out find..

I am just getting ideas now on harnessing methods to get my slave attached to it.  I am thinking eye rings at the top, with some tethering posts on the backside so I can string her up, or just attach whatever hand restraints I have to it.  gonna be a lot of fun  :)

the ply under it would be a good idea, but the 6x6s will make it HEAVY. what I have seen is two 2x6s nailed together to form each leg of the X with them cut so that they would there would be an even serface at the joint.

After working with the wood for a bit, the 6x6s are too heavy, and you would need even more tools to do it.  So I am going back to the 2x6s but doubling them up so its like a 4x6.  Save some weight.

very nice work.

May I suggest plywood for the sub to stand on? if she leans too hard on the cross she will push it across the floor.

you can use hinges to attach the legs to the wood

That is next.  Had to wait for it to dry.  I would seriously suggest anyone ever staining and polyeurethaning to actually go and get plastic gloves, the stuff is a bitch to get off your hands.

Open windows and respirator with VOC filters. Breathing those fumes is contraindicated.

Actually, Submissivelion, if you have a can of WD-40 sitting around, you'll find it does a great job of cleaning the stain and oil based paints off your hands. (like products break down like products... ie use oil based materials to clean off oil based finishes)

Having built about six of these things over the years, the one thing I would suggest is to be sure to make it out of as wide a stock wood as you can manage. Lying against a 12" wide board is much easier and comfortable for long term than trying to be comfy against a 2X4.

It may have been easier, quicker, healthier and cheaper to have bought one of my models. I have wall mounted St. Andrews made of solid hardwood (poplar, oak, cherry, walnut) with sanitary, durable furniture grade finishes, professionally upholstered padding, starting at $350.00. Other models, and other pieces (spanking benches, etc.) are also available.
