YourhandMyAss -> Inferior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 5:26:48 PM)

We bought some apple cider from Walmart, and it tastes bad, Other than just eating the 4 bucks and buying something we know is good, is there anything we can do?  It smells fine but when you taste it, it has a really nasty bitter after kick to it.

If it smells/tastes bad I wouldn't drink it. Cider once open doesn't have a long shelf life especially if unpasteurized.. although I don't imagine WalMart would carry the fresh stuff lol. If it didn't smell/taste off there are a lot of things you can do with it. A great sauce for chicken, mulled cider with spices and rum, using it in cake mix is yum, I keep meaning to try and use it in pancake mix where you use water not milk.  And, what does 'ingerior' mean?

inger

noun

a member of western Finnish people formerly living in the Baltic province where Saint Petersburg was built

That is fucking disgusting....Never been a big fan of the Fins anyways...Think their juices would probably taste pretty fucking nasty.....Have you tried adding vodka?

I haven't been into a Walmart for over 5 years.

poppeye I love walmart, don't really buy food from them though.

Gwynvyd -> RE: Ingerior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 5:55:25 PM)

Cider will turn to basicaly apple vinagar if it is left out, or opened for too long. Once opened it has to be refridgerated immediately.

Unless it says Great Value < Wal-marts brand name  > it isnt a walmart quality control issue really.. just the nature of apple cider going to apple vinagar damn quick and in a hurry in the right conditions.

I buy a lot of the stuff durring this time of year.. and have had it happen to me enough times to reconize the signs.

Stuff is *Nasty* when it goes south!

I hope the info helps hun. BTW camille65 is totaly right with the chicken part.. use it as a marinate for chicken.. or pork.. toss in some garlic and rosemarry... maybe some thyme.. and you will love it. I kept our jug that went south just for that reason. If you leave the Cider in the fridge long enough after it goes south.. it will become a "hard cider" even better to marinate with. We call the chicken "Drunken chicken"n when we use it then.

It's also great in a salad dressing once it has turned. Fresh spinach and mesclun (sp) greens. Dried cranberries, some toasted walnuts & a bit of crumbled bleu cheese.Mmmm I'm making myself hungry lol and all I have is PunkinHead Fudge (hehehe poor me)

I really don't know about the pasteurized stuff too much. I get mine at the local apple orchard and it's freshly pressed that day. Usually though, it will become hard long before it turns to vinegar....unless there is some bacterial contamination.

Well, i can't believe no one has said..take it back to Walmart  if it is bad and get Your money back..but i might have missed something...look at the expiration date...[:'(] i don't want to be negative...The only Walmart i have ever been to was out in the middle of nowhere in Ridgecrest, CA where my Master in 2004/2005 lived...i am glad  there are none near me..i bought a couple sweaters there and was amazed at the price..but they didn't last long...

edited for spelling and maybe grammar

plaufull I thought about taking it back can you do that once you've opend it?

mistoferin -> RE: Inferior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 6:43:34 PM)

Yes you can. Anytime you are not satisfied with a product I would suggest that you return it to the store.

Bufotenin -> RE: Inferior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 7:05:51 PM)

I doubt it's actually gone bad. I'm guessing it's Musselmann's? That stuff tastes like bitter apple skins. I think the only reason they manage to sell the stuff is because homebrewers use it to make cheap hard cider.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Inferior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 7:11:25 PM)

buf it's from zeiglers in pensilvania

In The Netherlands you can, but the container has to be full. I brought back a litre of yogurt the other day.

Heck i am so submissive i never do..well i did once and felt almost guilty but mostly for me it is do i really care about the money? but the man i am seeing now does that i think wow...either he is really cheap or has scuples....he bought some fresh squeezed OJ from Bristol farms last month and kept it in his fridge for a few weeks when it didnt taste good after he opened it way before the expiration day and when we went to take it back they said sure get a new one....i think everyone should do that and i will now as that is the only way to fix the problem hopefully in the end![&:]

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Inferior juices bought from walmart. (10/8/2007 7:21:45 PM)

playful I don't really mind the 4 bucks, I guess we just won't get juice that's not in the fridgerator section again cause I never had problems with cider in the fridge section when buying it.

by the way we just opend it tonight. it had that awful bitter after zing the moment it was opend.

You could go to the store, climb up on the Returns service desk, drop trouser, and take a massive, steaming dump, and say, "My apple juice tastes like that."

Or.........

Just take it back.

Interesting, their website says that their product is shipped in refrigerated trucks. I would say that would indicate that the product requires refrigeration. It should say somewhere on the container. Maybe it is Walmart that is not properly handling the product.
