siamsa24 -> I now sell Kirby's! (7/27/2005 9:10:44 PM)

Ok, new job that I am unsure of. Has anyone ever heard good or bad things about working for them? What about the company as a whole?

I am hoping it will be good, but I am already having trouble.

Second question, and this may help me with my trouble. I have to do 8 shows this weekend (Friday evening to Moneday evening) to practice. If anyone is in the Cleveland area and wants to help me out and let me practice my show on them I will be forever greatful (and you will get a carpet cleaned out of it too!). Please message me on the other side if you are interested.

One of my SCA friends did that for a while. He said it was a LOT of work, but he made good money. He mentioned it largely being commission, and that it felt weird to push stuff on people, but that once he got in the swing of it, it went well.

my step mom paid a fortune for one and it sucks. It seriously works horribly and I have had to clean the roller part for her a zillion times. She finally gave up and went to Walmart and purchases a sub $100 model that works perfectly.

Good luck to you though! I always love the part where after the salesperson uses your vacuum; the salesperson then vacuums with the sale model and get a whole bag load of stuff :)

I did it about 15-20 yrs ago. In the 80s it was tough to sell someone a $1200 vacuum. Going door to door basicly cleaning a persons house for free, and be rejected at the end of your pitch. I hated it. It used to be pyramid deal (dont know if it still is) where those above you money off your sweat. Selling cars would be easier if sales is the direction you want to take. Me, I joined the army, but I dont think I would make that recommendation to anyone no either.

Good Luck Siamsa. Selling is hard work. I know I can sell almost anything but I would never put myself in a position to sell something that I had to push on people.

Of course a job is a job. I wish you all the luck. At least you have a quality product to push.

stormsfate -> RE: I now sell Kirby's! (7/28/2005 2:17:15 PM)

Good luck, siamsa! My mother had a kirby for years and years (and it was one heavy sucker!), and I can remember that it cost a fortune to fix everytime it broke down. People seem to have a love/hate relationship with them. Either they love them or they hate them. Just remember...getting through the door is the hardest part :) You can make a lot of money in sales!

Do they still have the Kirby "Song"?

I knew someone who worked for them a long time ago and in the morning the sales staff used to meet before going out and sing some kind of Kirby song as a sort of "rah-rah" session, jumping up and down and everything!

Just as long ago I was approach to finance their product. To call it a "pyramid" scheme isn't really accurate because you are selling a product and at any level the product is delivered and your commission will be paid. It's more like a "multi-level" sales set up, akin to "Parti-Lite Candles" or, dare I say...."Amway". Make sure they don't charge you up front for marketing materials or "training" materials. That's a big part of some of these schemes. The $1500 unit back in that era, was delivered to the "regional director" for $350.00.

Think of it this way, the reason they can pay you a high rate of commissions is that there is a LOT of fluff in that retail price. They can only pay your commission, your manger's commission, and his manager's commission because of the huge difference between the retail cost and the manufacturing cost. The cost to value consideration is where you come in as a salesperson. You have to believe in the product.

The reason my friend didn't last long is that they pressured him to sell to his friends and family. They also gave recruitment "bonuses" and pressured him to bring more people into the mix. That's where the multi-level sales aspect comes in.

Learning sales and marketing though is an important skill regardless of which career you pursue after college. Even working in an office environment you first have to sell yourself to the person hiring. Although I don't have any current information I think Kirby still has favorable name recognition. Did you try researching for information on Kirby on-line?

You may do better, bottom line, as a waitress or in some other service industry, but you'll get more "experience" you can use in the future from this. And who knows - you may run into a dusty neighborhood, sell 15-20 and be able to attend the Folsom Street Fair in September!

SirKenin -> RE: I now sell Kirby's! (7/28/2005 5:45:39 PM)

Kirby's are very serious rip offs. I had a Kirby salesman here once. The vacuum is no better than any other vacuum after a year or so, but it is 10x the price. Of course if you hum and ha they magically have to meet a sales quota and the vacuum magically drops $1000 in price.

The whole thing from the eyes of Me, the consumer, is a big scam.

However, some people can pull it off and I hope that you are one of them. I have no doubt they make great commissions. Good luck with it.

I hear they do that at In N Out burger everyday. I can attest to them doing it at Wal-marts and Targets daily to.
Seems to motivate people...even if I find it a little odd and distracting when I'm trying to teach a class.
Not meaning to get off topic but your comment made me think about how many people still do that.

siamsa24 -> RE: I now sell Kirby's! (7/28/2005 7:50:53 PM)

Thank you everyone for your input. I have researched online, but I wanted some actual stories and opinions. Selling is hard, but I have done it for years.

Kirby has also changed a lot over the years, but I think that you are right Stormsfate, people either love them or hate them. And no, Merc, I didn't get charged anything up front, actually, they are giving me my Kirby that I take to people's houses and it's mine to keep. They are giving me all my supplies and even vouchers for gas. The individual that I am working for is very good about things like that, some of the distributers will make you buy everything, but this one doesn't (each one is independently owned and operated).

I will make a decent comission, but I also make a decent salary without having to make any sales, that is the whole reason I am even doing it. They also don't go door to door in this area. You actually have to call into the company yourself and ask for an appointment. The only reason that I am looking for people is because I need to practice my sales pitch and need people to help me out. I tell them straight up that they aren't expected to buy it and it doesn't bother me when they say no.

Ah, I quit today. I thought it would work, but it's not going to. There were too many shadey goings-on and I got reprimanded for asking questions (I was "bringing negative energy into the company").
Heaven forbid I should ask about it when they controdict themselves.......

Sorry to hear the news. I figured there was some nasty things going on behind the scenes, as they become self-evident as the sales person tries desperately to sell you one of their products.

Did you keep the vacuum? hehe

quietkitten -> RE: I now sell Kirby's! (8/2/2005 9:41:47 PM)

I was going to say "that sucks" but then I realized how lame that joke was....

Siamsa I am hoping a great new opportunity will happen for you since things with kirby did not work out.

*sends best wishes*

No, I have to bring it back, otherwise it's a felony.

And it does kind of suck, but I'm kind of happy about it too (and I thought the joke was funny [:)] ). I have an interview today with Walgreens (I applied for a management position) so I hope that works out.

Too bad. It would be nice to see someone get one up on them for a change. heh.

Good luck with your interview. Hopefully you will get the job.
