Is really fuckin hard sometimes....... I will admit something here now that is very difficult....when my mind is the most closed...is because I think I'm right.....I mean REALLY right. and so it was with the Daddy/daughter relationships...my mind was closed down HARD about them....I had some very strong opinions about them.... and I KNEW I was right!.....LMAO well...I wasn't *blushing* MY GOD I hate being proved wrong...LOL, however I LOVE the growth...theres NOTHING that can match it. So easy or not....an open mind is hard...and sometimes one has to FORCE their mind "open" eh?

toservez -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 9:44:17 AM)

One of the byproducts that I enjoy in being a slave is that my mind gets trained away from right or wrong in many ways and I better focus on concentrating on the better concept in my mind of it is what it is and be accepting of differences more easily.

I do though agree that often when I see myself going down the path of this is absolutely how it is that I often have to consciously step back or forced to open my mind how I can see things in a much different light.

Bobkgin -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 9:44:31 AM)

I don't find it difficult at all.

What is right for me is right for me. What is right for you is right for you.

An open mind is not a gullible mind. New information, opinions, viewpoints should be heard, and then processed to see which have value in my life and which do not. Obviously, that which contradicts proven fact should be discarded while that which legitimately undermines the proof that supports a fact should be considered, tested, and if proven true, adopted.

Life is a never-ending learning process. I embrace it with an open (but not gullible) mind.

breatheasone -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 9:48:41 AM)

Perhaps its just me then....but I don't always find it easy to be open....but I'm workin on it [;)]
BTW...not sure where gullible came from, but ok......[&:]

lateralist1 -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 9:53:57 AM)

I always keep in mind that I won't know what I like until I've tried it.
And even when I try something and don't really enjoy it with one sub it doesn't mean I won't enjoy it with another.
It's the relationship that matters most. The person, the strength of the connection which may or may not grow into that big word love.
If you think the person your with rocks then it's amazing what you can enjoy.
I am making an assumption here but it sounds to me as if you have discovered that what your slave needs can be as important to you as what you need. If I'm right then
if she rocks your world of course your going to enjoy the fact that you can give her what she needs. Some Doms are human too lol.

SubmissiveLion -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 9:54:14 AM)

When you find someone you can trust...it becomes easier.  It is hard at first, but eventually you open up.

I agree with you and SubmissiveLion both. When you find someone you connect with and trust totally, an open mind is easily achieved. Things I adamantly didnt want to do or would refuse to do, I've found that my mind is open about them now with Master. Just took finding the right Master, one that I totally trust, and would do anything for.

pleasureforck -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:05:46 AM)

I will admit I never understood how anyone could call someone Sir or Master but now I am calling my SO Sir when wearing his collar. I never understood the collar either or many other things I am now doing. I feel ashamed that I was such a judgemental person even though he tells me not to be. He says it's how I was programmed to be by society. My mind has been opened up so much by my Sir. He has made me a better person and continues to do so everyday. [:)]

velvetears -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:18:48 AM)

An open mind takes a willingness to accept change.  It also takes a need to search further than one believes they know.  It's also about breaking down preconcieved ideas ingrained in us from childhood and wanting to understand things from a new, different perspective.  It's realizing you don't have all the answers and you might possibly be wrong about something.  It's accepting that even though you have preferences others will differ form your own and that doesn't make them wrong or less than yours.  An open mind takes recognition that even when you think you have an open mind you might not recognize that it's not open.  It's open minded in itself to recognize when one is being closeminded and why.

I've often been accused of being closed minded because I do not adopt someone else's way of thinking.

I consider that an appeal to the gullible mind: "agree with me because I say so".

While some information can be verified and thus actually change a pov, some information cannot be verified or analyzed, and thus falls out of the "conclusive evidence" category and into the "indicative evidence" category.

Indicative doesn't carry the same weight as Conclusive. Indicative evidence must be accumulated, usually from a variety of sources, whereas Conclusive stands alone.

Indicative tends to be far more subjective, whereas Conclusive tends to be testable.

The point I'm making is that a gullible mind which changes position because someone says so is not the same as an open mind that seeks information from several sources and then analyzes the information to see what useful information might be gleaned.

LadyLynx -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:31:06 AM)

Having an open mind requires consistant work.  Back when I was a teenager I was pretty negatively minded and didn't feel like I was worth much. I wanted to get out of that, but I knew I had a very long road ahead of me.  I started out by catching myself thinking or saying negative things, reducing the amount of swearing, and when I did think or say a negative thing, I would try to change it around, think of an alternate point.  In some ways I have been successful. My self worth is much better and my posivity level is pretty high.  But only is if I consistantly work at it.

breatheasone -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:32:38 AM)

Agreed.....Theres an old saying I LOVE..."If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."

LadyLynx -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:32:44 AM)

lol I can accept other people changing, changing my own, yikes! scary!

Good point LadyLynxx - which is why the older pelple get the more rigid they can become in their thinking - too old and tired for the work lol.  Whenever you feel too comfortable with things in life perhaps it's a sign your mind is closing?

Yep...its called "Being old and set in your ways."....It happens to alot of folks...but the smart ones keep on keeping on and try to grow and learn....now I may not agree with every new thing I learn...but appreciating another point of view is always valuable.

SubmissiveLion -> RE: An open mind..... (10/9/2007 10:39:09 AM)

I think we are getting too far into semantics here.  I think what the original poster has said was that she has had preconveived notions of what certain things mean or are.  It has been through communication and and focus that she has kept herself open to new ideas.

Not everything can be reduced to verifiable information that can be proved and put into categories of conclusive evidence or indicitave evidence. What about just hearing other opinions which make more sense then your own and that adding value to your life?

The highlighted words requires testing. How many opinions that made sense went into the belief to begin with, and how many contradictory opinions that also make sense are required to reverse the belief?

For me, when faced with opinions that contradict other opinions, both apparently legitimate, it merely re-opens the investigation as to which point of view makes sense to me based on my own life experience.

Quite often an issue may remain in this intellectual limbo for years, without conclusive evidence one way or the other but merely a number of opinions that contradict one another.

I'd rather not form any firm conclusions under those conditions. Better to accept that the matter is in dispute than close down an investigation prematurely and be wrong.
