A lot of times people win a Nobel Prize for something I don't quite understand or have a personal interest in.So.. I like this one [:D] http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/10/09/nobel.physics.ap/index.html  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]    [sm=banana.gif]  [sm=banana.gif]   [sm=banana.gif] [sm=banana.gif] (I haven't seen a nanner conga line for awhile and I've missed them)

I think the technology that enables me to take large bits of streaming audio off the internet and back home or into my car for a long road trip is a marvelous bit of work.

On the other hand....watching algore get nominated for something Ralph Nader has been talking about for the last twenty-five years is quite discouraging.

They dont do these guys justice by calling them the fathers of the MP3 industry. What they did was discover a way to make hard drive smaller. Seriously smaller. I have an old hardrive on display in my house. Its nearly the size of a shoebox. It held at tops 70 megabytes of data. The hard drive in my laptop is the size of a credit card. It's holds 100 gigabytes. Without there discovery I would have needed over 1,400 shoebox sized hardrives to store the same amount of data that I can now carry with me. Their discover has impacted everything! Saying they invented the MP3 industry is like saying Alexander Fleming discovered moldy bread.

Perhaps the distiction here,is the word "industry".

The prize is for their work on hardware, but the title ,"fathers of the MP3 industry",is something someone else made up.

It`s possible that they made the industry possible(as we know it),and deserve the title.

These 2 physicists are as much responsible for the things we do with computers now as anybody. It's not just MP3's, software can be huge because these guys made it possible to have very small very high capacity hard drives. My mozilla install, firefox and thunderbird, takes up about 50 Mbytes. Without this technology that would be far too big for anybody but the most hardcore computer geek.

Ah!  A Physics winner?  Very nice for them!

Our current technologies are often brilliant and/or rigorous applications of modern sciences.. for one such as myself, a computer is practically a relic, a manifestation and demonstration of that which I consider to be holy.

Congratulations to those winners!
