Smell and Emotion

Why is it that smells can be so evocative and, in some cases, sexually stimulating? The answer has to do with human physiology and psychology.

Among the senses, smell is different from the other four primary senses because it is connected to the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory. In fact, according to Herz, the olfactory cortex—the part of the brain where smells are processed—was the site from which “the parts of the brain that are responsible for emotional processing, associative learning, basic memory and motivation—the collective structures of the limbic system—evolved from. In other words, the ability to experience and express emotion grew directly out of our brain’s ability to process smell.”

Herz believes the link between emotion and smell is so strong that they’re “functionally the same.” One result of this connection is that once a smell is associated with an emotion or memory, it tends to remain there for a long time. If you come across that odor again, your brain makes the association so quickly that you don’t have to even think about it. It’s almost a reflex.

And first impressions count. Herz says she likes the odor of skunk because she has positive memories associated with her first encounter with the perfume of a skunk: riding in a car through the country on a lovely summer day with her mother. Another example comes from a woman Herz knows who told her she hated the smell of roses because the first time she had smelled them was at her mother’s funeral.

The role of scent in creating memories was demonstrated in an unusual German study published in Science earlier this year. Scientists had subjects play a computerized game in which they memorized the location of playing card pairs. Once a pair’s location was learned, the subjects received a waft of a strong rose scent. Later, when the subjects went to sleep (a time when the brain processes things it has recently learned), the rose scents were again administered. The next day, the rose-scented sleepers performed an average of 11 percentage points better on memory tests of card pair locations. “By presenting the rose odor cues we … enhanced the transfer of these memories into the neocortex,” neuroscientist Jan Born, one of the study’s co-authors, told The New York Times.

Men: Pavlovian Dogs?

Herz says she knows of no scientifically credible research that has looked at specific odors that provoke male sexual response. She ascribes the dearth of scientific research into odors and desire to the fact that there is not enough commercial interest.

“From the point of view of the marketplace, what’s really more of a moneymaker is a fragrance that will make women sexually aroused and interested in men,” she says. “It’s somewhat culturally taken for granted that men are always sexually aroused. The harder part is getting women to be.”

But Hirsch believes that Herz is being unfair to his study and too simplistic in her analysis of why an odor can be sexually arousing. He says his study (which Herz admits she hasn’t seen) is scientifically valid. It was randomized, controlled, and peer-reviewed before being published in three different journals, including the Journal of Neurological and Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery.

“Sexual arousal is inhibited by all sorts of different things,” Hirsch explains. “By inhibiting those inhibitors [with odors], you can induce sexual arousal. It doesn’t have to be a direct affect.”

He offers several other possible reasons why these food odors increased sexual arousal.

“It could have induced a Pavlovian conditioned response, making men recall their girlfriends and wives,” he says. Or they could have stimulated a part of the brain called the RAS (Reticular Activating System), increasing the men’s alertness and their awareness of sexual cues around them. Odors could also have acted directly on another part of the brain, the septal nucleus, which controls a male’s erection. “There’s a direct anatomic connection between the olfactory bulb at the top of the nose and the septal nucleus. So anatomically it makes some sense.”

The biggest challenge in interpreting the results of his study, Hirsch says, was to find a hypothesis that might explain why food odors were always sexually stimulating to males, when items such as perfume were not. “The best theory we could come up with,” he says, “was evolutionary. That in our distant past our ancestors would congregate at a point of food kill. That’s where they would have had the greatest chance of finding a mate and having successful procreation. So there may have been a selective advantage to have increased penile blood flow in response to the smell of food.”

Sniffing Out What Works for You

Although plenty of potentially arousing scent elixirs exist for men, the trouble is finding the ones that appeal to an individual. It’s a daunting task because the average human nose is capable of distinguishing between 10,000 to 40,000 different odors.

If no universal aroma aphrodisiac can exist, how does one go about finding effective scent triggers?

“I don’t know, other than retrospective self-analysis,” Herz says with a laugh. “You can think of a past sexual experience, or a lover who had a particular fragrance you found exciting, or be aware when you come across an odor you find arousing.”
Another way to discover what odors pique your carnal interests, as well as those of your sweetie, would be to pull on your lab coat, grab some test tubes, and start experimenting. If that doesn’t sound romantic enough, try heading to the bedroom with an armful of fruits, vegetables, candies, cakes and liquors—and anything else you might care to sniff, nibble, or rub.

As i was getting ready for work i stumbled upon a body cream i have not used in a longgggggg time.  It was one my ex loved and i used often when i would go see him.  The scent brough to the surface memories of our time together, and i found myself responding in a physical way (getting aroused), with the combo of scent/memory.  i have thought about him before, obviously i will think about things in my past, but i don't get aroused.  Has anyone ever had this kind of experience with a scent, or maybe it was something else that when linked to a past memory gave that memory some kind of life.

hi Velvet
   yes, absolutely!

The smell of Noxema face cream or Apple Strudel takes me right back to memories of my Aunt Hilda and her house on Mount Helix ( in Calif)  which takes me to the smell of plum tree and apple tree blossoms ( which she use to grow there ) ..

The scent of Oak trees...takes me back to fishing with my father in the northern mountains of Arizona.  ( sometimes the sound of russeling tree leaves as well ) .

I love to brew coffee..the smell always reminds me of my parents home.

Master uses scent to help us feel "close" ( because of the miles that separate us right now ) .  He chose a scent and is training me to associate certain feelings, and responses to those feelings, with smelling that scent.          it's very cool actually.

I cannot open a bottle of peppermint oil without thinking of my first Mentor/Master.    I use it in most all scenes when I have time.

Thanks for posting this MaDomAura the part above i found most interesting.  Coincidental that i love skunk smell and hate roses.  The smell of roses annoy me, never knew why, still won't but at least i can safely assume it's probably because somewhere burried in my past i associated it in my brain with a negative experience.  The experience i had very much felt like it was a reflex.  As i said memories were always associated with different scents it just never happened that i had an actual physical reaction without any forthough about the scent and making the connection consciously.

It has been interesting reading everyones experiences, thank you all for contributing.

This may sound corny or sappy but I will say it anyway. If Master's scent is on a piece of my clothing , a pillowcase or something similar, I have been know to just sniff it like an old hound dog. It does make me physically aroused sometimes. Just something about smelling him on me makes me goofy.

Floridian air.  Maybe it's the pollen, the heat, or perhaps all of that humidity.. but it makes me feel alive again.

It does smell different doesnt it? I love the smell too.. when ever I leave the state I miss it.

It's the salt air, the heat, the pines, malaculca, spanish moss, sand, sweaty assed tourists.. *winks* and every now and again that coconut lotion ya'll slather on as sunscreen.

i have lived in florida (only 6 months couldn't take more lol) and have had relatives i have gone to visit down there and i always found the air oppressing - in fact the whole time i am down there i literally feel like i am suffocating.  An the other hand i love the scent of autumn in NY - that mildewy smell of rotting fall leaves, apple cider, smoke from wood stoves, cold crisp air - all makes me feel like i am coming alive again after the oppressing humidity of the summer.

Memory centers of the brain are closer to scent processing centers relative to any of the other sensory inputs.  This is why scents triger such vivid memories, more than sound, touch, or sights that remind you of past experiences.  Of course the other senses can triger memories and responses too, but scent is the easiest, because of the structure of the briain.  Who knew, working towards a degree in developmental neuroscience can be useful!

This is similar to what I would have said.
Smells are the strongest of the senses to trigger memory.

Although I am a predominately a visual person, smells for
me brings back memories very quickly.

I dont think it is odd to roll in the scent of someone you seriously love. It is that lizard part of our brain that draws us closer to our mates.

My slave left me this old sweaty shirt that I adore and sniff when I do unspeakable naughty things to myself when he isnt around.. It makes the memories stronger, and I climax so much harder smelling him "there" with me. I sleep with it when I miss him too much. Weird? neah.. even if it is.. I dont care.. it is comforting.

I have a perfume I made that anytime I wear it my girl is instantly "on" I usualy only use it when I am in a mood to Dominate her, or do a scene.

When ever I meet my slave at the house or out the first thing we seem to do, is to sink into each others arms and sniff/kiss each others necks.. and sort of scent mark like cats do... cheek rubbing, and snuggling. I want to take as much of his scent back with me as I can. I want to be able to lift my arm later after he has left.. and smell him on my flesh.

certain foods and things have memories attached to them.

Tiger balm always makes me aroused due to a past slave of mine.
Cookies and dougnuts make me think of my mum as do gardinias and roses.
Lilies, "white shoulders", oil of olay, and noxema remind me of my grandmother.
Foot funk reminds me of my brother. *chuckles*
Axe body spray reminds me of my son

ahh depends on where you live in Fla.. you couldnt *pay* me to live on the East coast. too hot, too crowded, too ickie. St.Pete is breezy with the bay of Tampa and all, and Ft.Myers/Naples is nice. I miss the change of seasons.. but not the cold, and snow, and all the BS that comes with it. I love picking out my x-mas tree in jean shorts, a tank top and  flip flops.

But the pumpkin patches are sooo cool up north. Halloween is my fave holiday. So many good smells in Autumn, and winter. I already have pumpkin pie spice going in my oil burners.

ahh it's land locked.. thats why...

someplace by the sea is nice.. I dont mind the heat.. I like to lay out in my courtyard and sun my self like a big assed cat. * privacy fenced of course! no need to frighten the neighbors * I can smell my Gardina tree from my Japanese meditation garden I have set up out there, and the incense on my outdoor altar mingles with it.. and it is just sooo relaxing and peaceful.

Memo to me.. set up the air matress palet tomorrow out there.

Does quite the opposite for me. Floridian air makes me feel weighed down from that thick as mud air. Then again, I'm from quite a dry, cool kinda place, hehe.

One of the strongest senses .. smell. The smell of lilacs coming in the window (reminds me when I was sick as a child and my mother kept watch over me). The smell of sawdust and horses and bulls sweating ... the days I rode rodeo (I can still smell it and feel it in my dreams). My grandmothers bread, the smell of a wheat field that is ripe and ready to harvest. The smell of newly mowed alfalfa. The smell of a baby as you hold them right after a bath. The smell of a good wine. Each womans scent, the smell that drives me crazy. What would life be without smell.
