Hello fellow corset wearers!

I am interested in learning about tightlacing. Any general comments on your expereince are appreciated. But I do have a few specific questions...

What interested you about tightlacing?

How do you keep your corset "fresh" so to speak if you wear it so often? Do you have more than one?

Do you wear a corset liner?

This may be a really stupid question...but is it possible to eventually lace your own corset? Does it have to be a front lacing corset to do this?

I tightlaced for about 6 months, and never had anyone but the cat to help me tie it (silly thumbless thing was absolutely no help at all), so yes - it's quite possible to lace your own corset.

At first it would take me about 30-40 minutes to get it fully laced, but after a few weeks it only took 10-15 minutes. I started out wearing it for 2-3 hours at a time, and gradually worked up to being in it 20-ish hours a day

I never bothered with a corset liner, and chose not to wear it during the worst of the summer months; I'd "freshen" it by wiping down the inside with a *very* well wrung out damp cloth ( mixture of water, white vinegar and a drop of essential oil - usually lavander), then spread it out in a sunny (inside) spot to dry. (oh and underbusts are easier for actually breathing in, than overbusts)

I'd love to get back to it, but it would be a bit impractical at the moment.. I will warn you that it doesn't take that great of an "unusual" hip to waist ratio to make buying modern clothes a pain in the rear. When I laced, my natural measurements were 34/28(29)/39; corsetted I usually ended up a 36/24/40(41). Which meant jeans had to be low rise and 2 sizes larger than "normal" to fit (and still didn't fit properly), flat front pants didn't fit well; pleated pants didn't fit right, straight skirts were out, sheath/bias cut dresses were out, skirts with a wide stomach panel and full skirt were out... things that fit at a 24" waist, didn't fit my hips; things that fit at a 40" hip didn't fit a 24" waist. I eventually got frustrated and gave up tightlacing.

Thanks Cutie!

I actually just got a Ms Antoinette corset and I love it. Master hopes I can wear it everyday, I just need to mentally prepare. But I love the fact how it makes me feel "bound" and "tied".

I've never waist trained 24/7, though I have done moderate (in that it's been at most for 15 hours at any one time) tight lacing for the better part of ten years.

In terms of long term wear, underbust corsets are more practical and more comfortable for longer periods of time, they are also easier to lace yourself. Honestly, save for very rare occasions, I've always laced my corsets myself. The longer the corset, the more likely you might need some assistance with lacing as the lacing might "catch" at the top and/or bottom and not cinch evenly. Most corsets will either lace up in the front or have a busk - but for cinching purposes, you're never going to get away from cinching in the back. If it's laced properly, this isn't difficult to do yourself.

As for recomendations, start slow. I will usually allow a few hours to completely cinch, to both let my body adjust gradually, and the let the corset warm and flex - I've been known to cinch up to 10" smaller than my natural waist this way (depending on your body, you may or may not be able to this safely). Keep in mind with long term or heavy tight lacing, if you feel resistance from your ribs, you need to chill. A well fitting (custom) corset is pretty important for this. There are other issues with long term or constant wear, such as muscle atrophy from your back always being supported by the corset, and other such fun stuff. Do your homework. :)

I collect corsets, some more functional, some more decorative. Individual care depends on the material. I always wear some sort of slip under a corset for multiple reasons. For one, the back lacing slides more easily across a smooth fabric than it does skin, this also creates a barrier between the lacing and my skin - which to me, can be rather irritating. This also has the benefit of protecting the corset from the oils from my skin as well, and makes maintanence easier. For any sort of latex, rubber, pvc or other plasticy man made material, I consider some sort of slip essential since the oil from your skin will deteriorate the material. Fabric is less susceptible to being damaged from skin contact, but it doesn't hurt to have that liner for previously mentioned reasons. :)

Greetings,

As a medieval re-enactor, and corset wearer and maker I must say I always wear a liner. I simply spend too much money, time and effort to get my corsets all smelly and icky by not protecting them. If you are going to move twords wearing one for long periods of time I would reconmend a custom made corset made to your *exact* measurements. A well made corset makes all the difference in it being a pleasure to be in durring the 10th+ hour or pure Hades.

As for tight lacing ~ go easy... I am just now going to be going back into this now that I have made a new corset to fit my thinner size ( lost and kept off 50 lbs recently ) Your ribs, and innards will thank you. You can break ribs by having some jack ass who has only seen "Gone with the Wind" as a refferance on how to lace you up. < mine did and broke 3 of my ribs. > ~ but that was years ago. Again go slow. Each week tighten it just a bit more, and stay in it a bit longer. Slow and steady. Listen to your body. While you are out of it, work out your back muscles, and stretch them, and your ribs as much as you have time for. Dont let them waste away.

There are severial corset styles and time periods you may wish to look at before chosing one or more. determine what silhouette you would like to have in the end. Different time periods and thereby thier corsets sought different silhoutettes. Most go with Edwardian as the "classic hourglass". Do your research. Insist on them using steel boning. It holds up.. that plastic crap warps, and never flexes back to its orig shape. I recreated a corset from the Tudor Tailor directly from the 1580's. It has a wooden busk in the middle, and laces up the back. I can use a lacing bar with spiral lacing just pull tightly as I walk forward. I wear a lightweight linen liner under my corset. It is also lined in brushed Fustian < cotton/linen blend > to help wick away sweat.

Have you looked through staylace.com? They have a lot of practical advice for tightlacing, including corset care and lacing tips.

I did for about a year steady then as needed for example while working , but used due to spinal problems to help keep the spine stable after spinal adjustments and spared me some pretty serious surgery that would have left me with far more permanent disability , I had 4 and handwashed as needed a couple I could front lace and the others back laced yes it is possible to lace on your own. One thing that should be considered is doing exercises and stretching daily with it off, as continual use without can lead to weakend muscles

I bought mine at Purple Passion in NYC. I had considered buying one online, however i think it was a much better choice for me to actually go to a store and have it fitted in person. For me, i have a 38G bust and it would have been really hard to find the perfect fit without trying them on. The salesgirl said too that it is often hard to determine what size you will fit into if you are new to the corset world. I am TOTALLY AMAZED that i take a much smaller size corset than i initially anticipated!
