So I was re-watching the Big Lebowski for the umpteenth time last night, and after watching the quick snippet where JEsus has to go around his neighborhood and introduce himself to his neighbors as being a registered sex offender, that got me thinking.

Has anyone here had that happen? Where a newly moved in neighbor came to you and said they were a registered sex offender? If so, how did you reply?

And for those haven't, how would you reply?

I'm not aware of any laws that require one to actually notify their neighbors, in fact that would invite chaos.  They are required to be registered and on a semi-public list that is accessible.

in Georgia they have to register and i think the neighborhood they move into has to be notified dunno.. but a note was put on everyones' door when my grandfather moved into our neighborhood.

dont some places have it as a law though? i think after a few years, you dont have to anymore, but im almost possitive there is a law out there that says they either have to, or should go around the neighborhood notifying their neighbors about being a sex offender.

It's quite possibly true in some places.  It's not here.

No place I ever lived had that law.  The neighbors might be notified, but not by the offender.  I have to laugh at this one.  Picturing that... oh yeah.... come to my door big guy!  Some big guy opens the door and ... well... you get the picture! lol

If someone came to my door and told me they were a registered sex offender, I wouldn't necessarily freak out. I would ask and/or investigate for further details. I was a victim of rape myself years ago and I still think the laws on what is considered a sexual offense are ridiculous. For example, in some religious sects it's common for families to marry off their daughters to much older men. Sometimes there is more than a 20 year age difference between the husband and his child bride, yet he can legally have sex with her. Meanwhile, some 16 year old can have sex with his 15 year old girlfriend and be convicted, which requires him to register as a sex offender for a 1 year age difference. A girl I went to high school with is a registered sex offender in my town. Her only crime was indecent exposure. Maybe she was caught skinny dipping at the lake or lifted her t-shirt up at a concert? Who knows. But the fact that she is a registered sex offender over indecent exposure is an outrage. This is why I never assume the worst upon learning that someone is registered as a sex offender.

Yeah when you check the registry and spot someone in your neighborhood, you should look at what the crime really was. There is a difference between some sick perv who targets 8 year olds and some guy who made a mistake with a 17 year old. Psychologically-speaking, the guy that messed around with the 17 year old is not a pedophile. In fact, that relationship would be LEGAL in most countries in Europe and also Canada. I think the age of consent in Canada is 14, actually.

As for The Big Lebowski... that's a damn funny movie... Never get tired of watching that.

A registered sex offender might mean anything,from a rapist and paedophile to one who might have in a period of illness done something purely for attention.Some of us in this lifestyle if caught by the authorities and prosecuted by a politically correct or other judiciary may even qualify for the same stigma.What someone was is one thing,I am more interested in what someone is now and will accept them for that,not their history.

If it happened someone labelled in public as a sex offender has enough punishment what with the stigma and the requirements of law,came to my house to announce the label, I think I would pity them for having to do that knowing a person in a new area keen to put the past behind them is doomed straight away.I will accept them for who they were,not what society has labelled them.

As to the safety of my family, well I am more wary of people without titles of public disgrace, the unknown out there yet to cause harm or indeed the as so far undetected.

Well, first I'd ask "Why are you telling me this?" as I don't think it's required here. I think it's kind of ridiculous to require it anywhere. But if it were, my next questions would be "What's your name? Where do you live? What were you convicted of?" Since My confidence in the justice system is low enough, that I won't automatically assume they're actually guilty. I won't even assume they're convicted of anything serious. As has been pointed out, "sex offender" is not always a meaningful term.

I really, really wish they'd drop the "sex offender" nonsense and give us a list that would be really useful - like "violent offender." I could care less if My neighbor is a serial foot fetishist (although having My shoes stolen would be inconvenient) but I would love to know if he's an armed robber.

How can a sex offender who has to limit contact with the type of person he offended then go door to door not knowing if that type of person is going to answer the door? I dont think this is a law anywhere.

I have to agree with what many of you posted.  There are some that are labled for some pretty off the wall things.  Personally I wouldn't attack... I'd investigate, but in some places they just lable and don't do much in giving you information.  What worries me are those that were convicted before the laws requiring registration.  Who are still active, but haven't been caught again.  I don't advocate harming them if they were quilty of more than some stupid law that lables someone and puts them in with the real bad guys, but I can see many who would.  Does it break my heart if they do? No... I tend to think it's funny when bullies get put in their place... advocate it... naw... I just want the bad guys who allow this to continue with stupid laws.

so, i just checked out the registry, and i have to say wow....far enough away where i dont think it matters, but still..wow to the sheer number and how close they are. also, their homes are marked with different colored boxes and theres a key to the side that says what each color means. it goes : offenses against children, rape, sexual battery, and then other offenses, which could be anything from public exposure to god only knows.

it sickens me to say that most of those dots are red, for offenses against children, and that the next most prominent is other(mostly because that means that some of them could have done nothing wrong..or as wrong as what those other bastards did to children)

If it's red, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Could be a case of parents freaking out over consentual sex with only a 1-2 year age difference. Depending on the state, it could be a case of an 18 year old with someone 16 or 17, or it could be a 16 year old with someone 14 or 15.

Also in Georgia, pissing in public and being convicted of it may get you on the same list as someone that molests children.

I would want particulars on the person and what they did.

I get 'watch dog' updates from 3 or 4 different sites every week; the closest offender we have works about 1/4 mile from me.  The maps I get have it colour coded, so I have kinda tuned into what colours mean and what is closest to my munchkin's daycare, school, and to our home. 
 
If a sex offender came and said introducted themself; I would be running every check on them I could before they got down the street and getting as much information as I could get my hands on; I would also let my munchkin know to AVOID that person.  I do believe that people can change; at the same measure, I have read enough and seen enough to know that a lot of those offenders have figured out ways of 'faking' that they are "ready to be released into society."  My child is my priority, so taking a few extra steps and making others aware of that person would not be out of the question.

I have a few problems with the registry. For one, the person is mobile. I dont think those types of people are trying to seduce local people into their homes. They're going elsewhere where people don't know them. So how is knowing their name, seeing their picture (as in my state) and knowing an address useful? Secondly, I've checked the registry and they are everywhere in my city. You can't go in a productive direction without crossing one. I am not told of the nature of the offense I can't tell if he/she is a serial violent predator, an 18 y/o who offended a 17 y/o, or someone who peed in public. I can not determine the risk of going in one direction cuz all directions are fucked up.  I suppose if I were agoraphobic I could use it as justification to lock my family in the house but that's about it. The purpose it serves is for people to hit the web and gossip jerry-springer-style over the pervert 'just over there' and create the impression that authorities and politicians are doing their jobs.

It's true....It has been proven that the majority of pedophiles can simply just "stop" if they really want to change.  Just another keen "srb" observation.
