my son was telling me of the new law in california that required owners of pit bulls to take extra precautions with them, not sure i remember now the details, but one of the court got up and started to read off a list of offenders in just that area, that had more freedom than did the dogs they were trying to get rid of and or register and protect people from,.... i wish i had paid more attention to the details but at the time, i found it very enlightening as to the intentions of people to animals. At least a dog can be readily identified for what it is.... where as a pediphile often goes unnoticed until it is to late....

Sex offenders are addicts in most respects; some can be reformed, others cannot. A lot of things effect that; it depends on the person if they can or are willing to change or not.
 
Can sex offenders change? Yes. Do they? Some do, some don't. Methods have been devised to figure out which offenders are 'better' the research I have seen on it is sketchy at best and it leaves too many variables.

Status: offline 		Thus far, I've never had a stranger introduced themselves as being registered sex offenders.

However, being that they had the balls to do so, I may be inclinded to hear there side of the story and double check the public court records on the incident.

"Sex offender" first implise inappropriate relations with youth or rape.

In many cases, people have to register because they didn't do a back ground check with the persons ID. Some guys turned 19 while there girl friend was still 16 with one day remaining before her 17th birthday. Other people have to register because they were caught fooling around in a public place. It only takes one bad link from an e-mail that could qualify you to have to register. If a High School chick slips into a Frat Party, who the hell is going to figure her out?  

Anyhow, my choice on what to do with an RSO, really has to be a case to case basis. We have may who are registered just because they where at the wrong place at the wrong time but never did anything to anyone.

Though they would never be instantly welcome into my home, I'd like to first try to give my neighbor the bennifit of the doubt by first listening and double checking some public records and news articles before I decide to never have anything to do with the person.

I believe I recall reading about a suicide case in the news a couple years back.  Seems a newly-registered sex offender took the court-ordered sign on his yard identifying himself as such a bit harshly.

Dear Karana.  I remember that I never despised anything Bush did as much as passing this one law that outlawed animated porn that seemed to relate to minors.  Pedophiles, unlike homosexuals, do not have the benefit of suitable partners.  They pretty much have to repress it; which, perhaps unkind to them, is the lesser of two evils.  But if they could find some satisfaction and more securely surpress it via the use of age play or/and hetai-esque pictures?  Bah.  I'm not sure what the intent of this law was, but I'm sure at least one child, somewhere, was abused for it due to the weak will of one so driven without being allowed a safer recourse.

Mods:  I'm not sure if mentioning this sort of subject at all is forbidden here.  We're not supposed to talk about illegal things, but we're obviously allowed to talk about crimes in the news, which is what this is.  Still, I understand that there's a certain uneasiness about this subject, perhaps moreso due to attempting to maintain a respectable, even if kinky, community online without being misunderstood to others as something less than tasteful.
 
If this post violates any wishes, my apologies; I'll understand its deletion and appreciate the clarifcation.

Status: offline 		No, I haven't met such an individual via any means as of yet.

If I did, I'd likely question them avidly; I'm quite a curious person, after all!  I'd likely first look to understand their crime and assess if this individual poses an active threat.

I'm in a dorm now, though my family's house is back in a very.. family-orriented community.  Small, token gate, children and their parents often out on the streets, older folks walking their dogs and talking.  Quite a pleasant place, really.

Part.. part of me doubts that even a truly repentant sex offender would even be given a chance.  The neighhorhood would likely have plenty of lawyers interested enough in the well-fair of the area to pose legal pressures that would, in reality, boarder dangerously on harrasement, if not blantantly violating any semblence of due process.

I.. I don't know exactly what depravity could drive someone to do such things.  I'm not entirely sure how I'd react to such an individual.. I suppose I'd have to hear their story and think it out then.  I feel my conclusion would likely have a great potential to vary with respect to the particular sex offender.

PS-  You know, come to think of it.. I'm not sure if Virginia requires such information, nor have I checked that database for my area before.  It's an odd thought, but even several may already reside there without my awareness.  I do wonder, though.. if one did move in, how much the atmosphere of the community would change?

Status: offline 		The whole database thing is a joke...really. All it is is a tool put out by the government to give people a false sense of security in order to give the illusion that our elected leaders are doing something about a problem they cannnot possibly solve.

Statistics show that in the United States, a woman is raped every 30 minutes. Nearly 2/3rds of such cases are never reported. Do you think that every rapist or sex offender in this country is in that database?

Back in my earlier years, a friend and I went out to a hotel room for a night together after we both had a particularly bad week.  One thing led to another, despite the lack of intentions.

For the next two months, she told her friends and family that I raped her.  You see, she had a boyfriend at the time (which was apparently long distance, and she hadn't bothered to inform me of before hand..), and she didn't want to risk the relationship.  I was a rapist for those two months until the guy had enough of her and dumped her.

She apologized.  And only her.  Not a single other person.

Status: offline 		CSM, you have it a bit backwards. Offenders were ordered to register not so the public could track them rather that law enforcement could find them and track them. If they work out of town they also have to register in that town or city as well. They only started getting posted on websites when the public demanded it.

In Illinois they don't have to go door to door thankfully, I think that is a foolish idea.
If it ever did happen....I'm not sure how I would react.

Status: offline 		There is a guy in here who recently wrote me and it said (a few days ago) in profile he is a registered sexual offender.  Now it says his parole is over lol.

I didn't ask nor care why he is on that list.  That was red flag enough for me.

first, ill say it chaps my ass when, no matter what someone types on here, theres always one person saying prove it, show me something that proves that point.....they bug the hell out of me.....

thats said, please show me one time a sex offender was "reformed or changed their ways".  I am by no means a genius, but i watch a lot of court tv and real life cop shows, and reading about laws and forensics is fun to me.

oh and i have, of course, stayed in a holiday inn express.

all kidding aside, i have never heard of someone recovering from being a sex offender.  it would give me great hope in humankind to find out that is possible.

Status: offline 		It’s nice you all have maps with little colour coded dots but how exactly does this affect your parenting? I’ve never understood this aspect that you should be extra careful because there is sex predator down the road but it’s ok to be lax otherwise? What about all the predators you don’t know about? Surely this system only gives a false sense of security and you should always be careful anyway? Does the system also show the sex offenders that have avoided the system as best they can by moving to other areas and out of contact with authorities that would have kept tabs on them before the system was introduced? I hear it drives offenders underground, is this the reality? Also what are the incidents of vigilante attacks on sex offenders?
