On the other topic on EMI and the recording industry, Radiohead are mentioned as breaking newish ground by releasing their new album 'in rainbows' over the net for download - at whatever price you choose, with a boxed set available to order online at £40 that will appear in 2008 with extra CD and artwork (+the download).

Well, it was released today for download and I just wanted to comment on how absolutely excellent it is.  Jazzy and electronica with enough of the hauntingness that makes it Radiohead.  For their seventh album, it doesn't fail to deliver.

With most bands earning their monies from royalties and live performance anyway, I believe this is an excellent way to proceed.  So ok, Radiohead have a cult following and they are already well established, but as a music fan/geek myself I find many new artists online via their website/myspace and other download sites and there are a few bands now becoming more recognised.  The Charlatans are also delivering their new music free on download and it is actually far easier to rip music from the net than ever before.  Quite frankly, the loss of the 'music industry' is nothing more than fear mongering by the corporate giants afraid of losing their big ole paypackets.

Anyway - if you haven't heard it - or of it - please go check it out at the inrainbows site.  I really recommend it and I am really looking forward to the boxed set and artwork (.asalways.).

Peace

We paid for the full boxed set - which comes with the download.
If you knew anything about Radiohead - then you would realise that your question made little sense...

I kinda guessed...  how much would you pay AL?
I know it's reported the average of 50p to £1 is reported for non RH/youraverage (whatever average is) fans... with RH fans prefering to purchase the full version anyhow, and serious music fans paying £7 on average...But these are just early reports.

Either way, the "Direct to Artist" model has got to work out better...

Look at Gov't Mule and Mule Tracks http://www.muletracks.com/ Where you can pickup the concert you went to for 12.95 for the mp3s or 14.95 for the lossless FLACs...

What part of 14.95 do you think the band is keeping? 10 bucks? 7.50? Either way, it's printing money, and it's only going to get more popular.

Well, I figure that anything less than $1 per song is a savings from individual downloads, and I've never objected to paying list price for a CD before.
On the other hand, note that the bulk of my collection came from cut out bins and discount stores, so I suspect I'm averaging about 6 bucks per record. Note that they are all purchased legitimately except for ones that were handed to me by the artist themselves.
So, to directly answer your question I would be happy to pay around $8 US dollars for the download, sans packaging, artwork, etc., since I do like their music.  IIRC the deal on CD Baby lets the artist keep about that amount.

Is their any way to tell if that is what they are getting under the 'pay what you want' offer?

Well, unless they release any information on their turnover I cannot answer that, I only have information on polls set by outside sources.(see above).

I have to admit, I am a Radiohead geek and a music geek.  So for me, paying up to £10 for a Radiohead CD or some similar band (Like NIN, TooL etc) isn't beyond reason, especially if sold like this.  For the lower end of the musical spectrum of my tastes I would say half that amount gets me purchasing a CD.  I am very much a 'will I like it' person so this medium I do like.  I'll download or listening online to tracks or albums and then purchasing the item... and the way Radiohead have designed this you can work this way.  But then, I am also a person who buys a CD for the artwork only, not the music.

Well, I seriously hope they have better success at this than Stephen King did.
I wouldn't mind one bit if the old business model was replaced by one that put lots of money directly into the artist's hand, which is why I was hoping they got $500....

If they clear even a single $1 per download for the whole album, it's better than or on par with what they get from the labels anyway.

Other bands less popular should see music downloads as a means to promote themselves for live performance - like radio play. At the performance they can worry about what they earn and how to sell other junk like teeshirts, posters, and CDs with special packaging.

Sorry, but music is basically free and always was - Mp3 downloads merely confirms this long held presumption and put all the nails in the coffins of the music labels.

Bigger bands don't need the promotion of the labels once they get monster big, and the bands and labels are figuring that part out too. Thank you, Prince and Radiohead.

I don't even think you need to be "Big".

You just need to cultivate your fanbase, and give them options.

If you can consistently put asses in, say, a 2700 seat venue, you could likely make a decent living on tickets, merchandising, and direct-to-consumer music sales.

I'm not a fan (yet?), but I like their approach and may just go download and give it a listen!

Use the Standalone music player, and see if you like.
