If you are an RN, you ought never to have any trouble securing a job. The shortage in the NY area (including Northern New Jersey) is acute. If you don't yet have your RN, I recommend you study hard and get one. It's a key to vacations on those spa islands spoken so highly of.
The Newark area is pretty industrial but there are amenities. Be prepared for some serious rate shock on your car insurance. Your property taxes (paid in rent) will be higher and your cost of living will rise, but you're paid commensurate. Don't drive into NYC. learn the PATH (Port Authority-Trans Hudson) trains and the NYC subway; both run 24 hours and they're pretty safe. If your master is in NYC, you'll be doing the commute lots.
You and your master ought to spend a day off getting to know your neighborhood so that you can find stuff, like laundry, dry cleaning, grocery stores and at least one or two bistros where you can grab a quick something.
The biggest heterosexual group in NYC is The Eulenspiegel Society (TES), though they claim to be "pansexual." There have been some pretty bitter political flamewars in the organization but it's still a pretty viable place to meet and greet.
You should be aware that on October 31st, there is a positively huge Halloween parade in Greenwich Village that is well worth going to if you have time. It's crazy, zany and loads of fun.
