There is a person here I disagree with a lot on these board's. He usually tells me I talk not based on facts. That is wisdom.

It is? That's news to me. So if I run around claiming that the moon is made of cheese (talk not based on facts) then I'm wise? If that's the case then I know A LOT of "wise" people. Speaking based on one's own experiences is just that - speaking based on one's ow experiences. That doesn't automatically make one wise. One can have many different experiences under their belt but if they lack the ability to have learned and applied lessons from those experiences they're nothing more than that. Back to the drawing board on that theory, I think.

a friend who remarked on the seemingly higher number of quite intelligent people, statistically, involved in BDSM.

I think this is the sort of thing that folks say to flatter themselves, and there are other variations on it about how BDSM relationships are better, sex is better and on and on.

If anything, such statements imply to me that folks in BDSM are likely to be more delusional than vanillas and not as smart.

for me the world does seem to be getting dumber.

When I was younger I used to give folks (or "the world") credit for having enough sense to know what they were doing even if it didn't make sense to me. But after watching them with interest to figure out what I was missing I eventually saw that I wasn't missing anything and they were just being dumb. So I don't think the world is getting dumber, I just have more confidence in my ability to identify idiots and so I now see more of them than before.

I believe, and Gloria will correct me if I am mistaken, but what she means is that wisdom is gained from experience - so - if you had been to the moon and found it was made of cheese to yourself - then that is wisdom. Wisdom isn't the fact that it might be cheese - but that it is cheese - to you.

urgh - typos(reason for edit)

I would also add that I was explained to (which makes perfect sense to me) that the difference between intellect and wisdom is the compassion. Intellect shows no compassion, just cold, hard facts. But these facts are black and white, whereas wisdom understands the shades of grey....

Peace and Love

Yep, and when we were young and truly ignorant we had all the answers. Knew it all and nobody was going to tell us otherwise. What asses we made of ourselves back then.

Ah the memories! LOL It's almost a tragedy that when we are in our prime we are also still in the process of figuring out what really matters. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have all that energy and be able to focus it with experience? But I guess it's necessary for it to be that way so when we get ourselves in hot water, we have the reserves to pull ourselves out quickly before we get burned.

I got that in her post. My point was that experience alone doesn't magically sprout wisdom. I know people who keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over and they don't even realize they're doing it. They have *lots* of life experience but they lack the self awareness to see the destructive patterns they create. These people have oddles of experience, but precious little wisdom.

I think you get all kinds in this lifestyle. However there are many well educated members of CM that post here, according to the following thread:

What's your education level?
