Talk to your sub. You seem to have discussed things previously. The sub may have concerns you don't know about on his part. This gives you a chance to feel things out and get feedback. I am not telling you to bottom from the top. Just explore his mind.

I'm very sorry to hear you had a bad experience i wish you all the best in your next experience. also it sounds like your former sub has other issues to deal with before delving into a 24/7 relationship. now to the op should you find another to try it with, from a submissives point of view start slow and build up in steps. both of you are learning each other. next have a time/place/method of communicating with each other openly without fear or reprisals, i have a journal and if i feel the need i may request to converse on the subject. my M'Lady and i do this often during online chat or while driving to events. i have not yet gotten to a 24/7 as i am in the military and have a vanilla wife, i have spent several days at a time serving and each time i get better and learn more as does my M'Lady. i do wish you to find joy and happiness in your life
