slaverosebeauty -> Lost voice..... (10/13/2007 12:44:42 PM)

I have a cold and I have all but lost my voice - its very raspy, scratchy and sore; I am on some strong cold medication for the next month as well as an inhaled daily steriod inhaler for asthma [Advair] until further notice.  I have tried steam, a waterless vaporizer all night and Throat Coat Tea with honey; still nothing. I'm resting it as much as I can, but, its not easy.

I am suppose to do a [knifeplay] demo this week, but, I can't do it unless I have my voice back. Any suggestions would be welcome; the sooner I get my voice back the better.

If you can tolerate Aspirin, try gargling with soluble Aspirin in warm water four times a day. You can then swallow... if its not going to interact badly with your other meds. Good luck!

Theraflu.  I SWEAR by that nasty, odious, wonderful powder.  When I'm sick I crave it more than a crack addict craves her fix.

Sexy picture, by the way.

In my opinion the cure to all that ails you is Buckley's.  If it doesn't scare the cold out of you, it will certainly kill it.  Tastes like crap, but I swear by it.  The inhaler will not be a big problem, its never been one for me anyway.  Have fun.

Warm showers and baths...and the description of your voice you gave sounds hot, maybe it will further the presentation. [;)]

I love "Fisherman's Friend." They come in an altoid-looking container, smell foul and taste worse. But, they've consistently worked for me.

I do agree with Laurell, though...raspy voices are sexy. [;)]

Feel better soon,

Miss Ellen

Thanks for the advice, I will look into those things. Why does all the stuff that work taste so bad?!?! I have been consuming so much honey I think bees will start to follow me, lol.

As for the raspy voice, MJ said He felt guilty for making me talk on the phone, so its IM and txt msgs until I get my voice back.

Considering that my job is basically depended on me having a voice, I am willing to try just about anything,.

Hey there!

I'm sorry to hear about your voice.  The secret is GINGER!!!  You can buy the tea but I prefer to buy a ginger root, cut it into chunks and put it into a pot filled with water.  Boil this for a good half hour....watching water level.  This will be VERY strong so use it as a concentrate...you can store this in the fridge for up to a week.  Pour a bit of the ginger water into a mug and add hot water to make a tea.  You can add honey or sweetner of your choice.

Also a hot tottie of hot water, squirt of lemon, honey and about 2 tablespoons of bourbon will help soothe the voice.  Emergen-C is also wonderful.

Also, drink more water than you think you can stand....hydration is key!

Good luck!!!

oh no, this reminds me that the Very Brady Christmas season is almost upon us.

Carol loses her voice.  But hers comes back at the last minute only by miracle.

You're better off using the previous recipe.

Unfortunately about all you can do is ease the symptoms and wait it out. Until the infection has run its course and your body's immune system has gained the upperhand your vocal chords will continue to remain inflamed, so resting them while they are in this compromised state is the best way to go. The other thing you have to watch out for, is that you might start off with a cold virus, but pick up a secondary bacterial infection in your throat or lungs. If things don't improve in a few days you should go see your doctor, because you may need antibiotics (which wont work against viruses, only bacteria).

bottombob -> RE: Lost voice..... (10/14/2007 8:18:28 AM)

wash your mouth out with Listerine spit out most and swallow the minor buts remaining, small amounts help the throat

MstrDennynSlave -> RE: Lost voice..... (10/14/2007 8:25:12 AM)

Gargling with salt water will also help. Salt heals and soothes sore throats. As the earlier poster stated, drink plenty of water, the more water the better.

givemyall -> RE: Lost voice..... (10/14/2007 9:55:11 AM)

I've had vocal chord polyps removed twice and have learnt that there isn't much you can do once the vocal chords are inflamed, as ThinkingKitten has stated, ease them and then it's time that is going to heal.  Try to rest your voice as much as possible and whatever you do, don't start whispering thinking it's better than trying to talk at a normal level, it's more damaging to the vocal chords than shouting at the top of your voice.... and definately don't go and buy a saxophone like I did, unless you want a real shouting at by your ENT Specialist [:D]

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Lost voice..... (10/14/2007 11:05:01 AM)

givemyall, NOW you tell me; I have been whispering when I have to tell my munchkin anything since he doesn't understand sign language.

What I have is a cold and sores down my throat as a result of Advair; my NP put me on a stronger version of Sudafed basically; I have taken hot baths to help steam my cold out, but, my job is a receptionist so talking is kinda a mandatory thing.  I called the people I am suppose to do the knifeplay demo with, they said they can put it off if I want until I can talk.

Looks like I will be gargling salt water, throat coat tea, listerine and ginger root tea for the rest of the day.  Thanks everyone.

Kalista07 -> RE: Lost voice..... (10/14/2007 11:14:29 AM)

slaverosebeauty,
As much as i hate to admit that my parents were right about anything, here goes..... Try putting Vicks on Your chest, neck, and throat.  If You have sensitive skin like i do, try using the Johnson and Johnson baby safe version of Vicks... Another thing that i do, which helps tremendously is to get the baby vapor bath stuff and fill Your bathtrub with it....
Additionally, if You  have any fluid that's building up (mucus) try drinking pinapple juice.. Orange pinapple is the easiest to get down...  It apparently cuts the fluid...
Not to be reactionary or anything, my doctor took me off advair because she said people were dying from it....  i'm a firm believe in gargeling with Listerine....It's one of the few things (other than gargeling with hot salt water) that saved my life when i  had hand-foot-mouth disease...
Good luck and i hope You feel better soon,
Kali
