The words decide, not people.
BDSM is simply an acronym Bondage/Discipline/Domination-submission/Sadim/Masochism.
If your relationship contains any single one - that is practising BDSM. Pretty simple really...

This quote sums it all up.  If you still have issue or question after this then maybe there is another underlying issue that is making you confront yourself here

I clearly tell them that Ds is NOT a part of "bdsm."

Why not, LA? This newbie is genuinely curious.

i'm not LA but i can tell you that i personally know quite a few hard-core masochists who are in no way submissive to their partners, even during a S&M session.  When one is the pitcher and the other the catcher, people may assume the pitcher is the Dominant one but doesn't the pitcher rely on the catcher to throw the ball back?  Then what is that called?  i know that in my early years i would never have called myself submissive or gods-forbid, slave.  But my interest in bondage and discipline bordered on obsession.  D/s was never a part of my play back then.  A great many people tend to believe that BDSM needs to include all the letters, however there are lots of real masochists who hate bondage and never participatw.   i'm a bondage junkie who edures pain only because i've discovered and embraced my submissive (oh let me say it - slave) nature and i want my Master to enjoy what He enjoys which is to see me suffer.

WIITWD is not any less complicated than relationships in general and there are as many variations as there are people who practice it.
