Ok- I bought materials to enclose the front and side porch on my house.  How would you re-inforce a wall?  My bed and computer are inches from busy street traffic. Vehicles fly off the road and collide into porches- it happens. So it is a matter of time before such.  Thousands of dollars of windows will be in this porch.
 
Ideas-  ?

Status: offline 		I would need a site plan to comment. The usual options that exist for impact protection include concrete upstand or bollards. Either of which require sufficient fixity to the ground or they will just act like sliding blocks.

Bearing in mind that the wall or bollards will fail in bending or shear you have to check for both:

Bending:
You have to calculate the moment induced by a truck hitting the wall at so high from the ground; Force X Distance. This has to be resisted by the moment of resistance which is found from the lever arm between the compressive and tensile reinforcement.

Shear:
The wall should have sufficient area of reinforcement to resist the shear. If the area of the main reinforcement is not sufficient additional bars need to be lapped at the positions where the shear force is highest. For a fixed end cantilever this will be near the support i.e. where the wall is embedded into the ground.

Some overall checks also need to be carried out:

A retaining wall can fail in sliding, overturning or slip circle failure. Therefore the foundation for the wall or bollards needs to be checked to ensure it meets these requirements.

Sliding:
Sliding is resisted by fiction between the soil under the foundation and the foundation. Frictional resistance can be increased by increasing the weight of the wall. A shear key can be added meaning the sliding force will also be resisted by the soil pressure on the passive side of the wall.

Overturning:
The overturning moment that will cause a wall to topple has to be smaller than the moment resisting it due to the weight of the wall and soil in some cases.

Slip circle failure:
A number of possible slip circles acting through the soil under the wall have to be considered. The resistance to frictional forces along this arc then needs to be found. This will vary greatly depending on if the soil is cohesive or non-cohesive and also be affected by the pore water pressure within the soil.

If a truck hits a column or wall head on then the wall will probably fail. Depending on the mass of the truck and the velocity at which it was travelling this will be a large failure or a small failure. I recommend therefore as your engineer that you seek some traffic calming measures adjacent to your property.

Status: offline 		--I am insured= I guess. Im looking at it- wanting the best sound-smog insulation.  Since moving somewhere rural just isnt going to happen for a number of years= I may as well put up the barrier.

The yard looks very nice- vast southrern exposure.

The question you should be asking yourself is: are you insured against a truck crashing into your front room and squishing you flat against the other wall? It ain’t pretty let meee tellll youuu!

I know nothing about acoustics and smog. Apart from if you want sound proofing you need a pretty solid construction with some flexible membrane to dampen vibrations through it.

Status: offline 		when i bought the place in April- i went with so so insurance. with the idea up upgrading it as the place gets better.

Status: offline 		So so insurance Ltd. has very cheap premiums but the cover is terrible. You want insurance for the toe nail clippings on your bathroom floor but will they give you it? I ask? Noooooo!

Status: offline 		As you already know...there is nothing that is going to stop a vehicle from doing a drive through-through the house.

However if you have room.  I'd plant some quick growing shade trees or some hedges.  Something that is going to put its roots deep enough into the ground that it will slow down whatever decides to come flying at you.

You already have the insurance ideas.

Status: offline 		my worker showed up. yay.  my brother and best friend think enclosing the porch will detract from the house. im soick of the highway noise and grime=- also it will be tastefully done. the windows alone are over 3k.

Status: offline 		When you are done enclosing your porch....you can come enclose ours.  It is about 80% done already.
Just need a gate or something on the front and something to enclose the 3 arches.  I've thought about screens and windows before.  They would have to be custom made but never really looked into it with any vendor yet.

Currently we got our winter wood delivery yesterday.  So two arches are completely covered with wood.

Status: offline 		The windows I bought are quality BUT they are bargain bin windows.  SO- due to that- we can use windows that wont fit in the South or West wall- per the enclosed porch. Both  my brother and my best friend thinks it will bastardize the arcitecure of the place. -But 1. It will be new on 2 sides. Have very nice windows. And in the end add to the enjoyment of the place.

My brother said to have this worker do "everything" -as it doesnt get any cheaper.
SO I plan too.

Astounding the amount of money one can spend- it is endless!

Anyhow- this guy loves to build stuff and do woodwork. I am looking for a router- as it makes sence to make trim and molding - aposed the buying it at retail

didn't work for the middle school gym that the drunk parent drove through after running over his child yesterday afternoon here in san antonio......

right now the thing is braced- and i hope it doesnt collapse. my worker went to a football game.

A few houses in my area are on curves that if you are not paying attention and going faster than 30mph, you can easily crash through a fence and into someone's bedroom or living room.  The solution that the city came up with, 'big boulders placed at strategic intervals so that vehicles would not be able to destroy property on the other side.'
 
Hey they work, since they put those up over 5 years ago, no more 'uninvited' guests have shown up.

I just paid my electrician 95 an hour.  Contractors don't come cheap.
