If I were going to reduce that down to one simple answer, it would be this. When the slave reaches a point where they no longer have either the desire or the will to obey. I would also add if they asked to be released of course, but I don't think that's the kind of thing you were referring to. Couple of examples of what I mean.

My first slave, way back when I was first starting out myself, cheated on me on several occasions and I didn't find out til later. That was the end of that. You could say it was the cheating and that did hurt I'll admit, but it was also as much because I no longer trusted her to obey me... I felt she no longer had any desire or the will to obey.

More recently there was someone I had gotten to know. Though I had not collared her it was being seriously discussed and we were in that phase where she was under consideration. Unfortunately she started getting bratty on me, even small things became arguments over what she would and wouldn't do... she was pushing back at me and hard. I won't go into why out of respect for her privacy, there were things happening in her personal life that put her under a lot of stress, that was the cause of her behavior. We tried working through it for awhile but there are some problems you just can't fix, and she needed to deal with things on her own. She reached a place in her life where she just couldn't give me the obedience that we both wanted and we broke it off by mutual agreement and remained friends.

In both cases though, you could argue that there were trust issues, lack of communication, etc., but really, it did come down to an inability to obey that either caused or resulted in everything else. It was that which killed both relationships for me.

the breaking of trust on either side signals the end of the relationship for me. It sometimes hurts like hell when that happens. I have found it is impossible to realistically continue past that. It just no longer works, in either a lifestyle and scene or in vanilla relationships.

Trust is the foundation of any relationship, especially of any of the farther reaches of interacting. The further we get away from the Missionary Position Lights Out Face-to-Face kinds of relationships, the more that seems to be true.

My opinion only, your mileage may vary, and probably does, and that's OK. (MOO, YMMV, APD, ATO)
