Level -> Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 2:23:03 PM)

quote:

Joe Torre is out as manager of the New York Yankees, rejecting a substantial pay cut after the team failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.
Torre turned down a $5 million, one-year contract Thursday that still would have made him the highest paid manager in baseball.

Bench coach Don Mattingly is the leading contender to replace Torre, who led the Yanks to 12 straight playoff appearances and won four World Series championships. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi, the NL Manager of the Year with Florida in 2006, is another top contender.

Estring -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 2:26:23 PM)

Being an LA Dodger fan, I am certainly not a Yankee fan. But Joe Torre is a class act. Next step for him is The Hall Of Fame.

I agree 100%, Estring. I think Steinbrenner is a fool to let him leave.

It'd be something if Mark Cuban buys the Cubs, hires Torre, and blows everyone else away.

i wish the braves would get him back and run bobby out of town.........................

I am wondering if Joe may just want to retire and relax at this time. He certainly has earned it.

just glad we dont need joe in cleveland. Hell of a manager, yankees are fools to let him go.

peterK50 -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 2:59:16 PM)

He was great at managing the NY media & the giant egos in the clubhouse. His day to day field management left a lot to be desired. He never bunted so the Yankees hit into far too many double-plays. Looking for the big inning rather then playing small ball leads to early playoff exits.Mattingly is too inexperienced & Girardi was a teammate too many of the current Yankees. I'm hoping they hire 3rd base coach Larry Bowa.

I don't think so, he mentions not wanting to just sit back.

Looks like your guys are going to play the Rockies; ought to be a good Series.

I'd be surprised if they hire Bowa; I can see that turning into another Steinbrenner/Billy Martin free-for-all, if they did.

Maybe Tony LaRussa, but I think he's a bad fit for New York. Bobby Valentine back from Japan? Stranger things have happened.

Level -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 4:22:55 PM)

I'm surprised that St. Louis is dragging things around, in getting LaRussa re-signed. Bobby Valentine? Whew..... [:D]...... that'd be something, all right......

I think Girardi is a possible hire, but I really have a gut feeling that Steinbrenner wants Mattingly.

peterK50 -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 4:52:49 PM)

George does like Don Mattingly, I am just afraid he is too inexperienced, he is held in very high regard by the NY fans, but if they get off to a bad start it may be difficult to get rid of him. I like Girardi but not for a veteran team. I'm afraid in losing Torre they Yankees also will lose Rivera, Pettite, & Posada. Clemens is surly gone & ARod is 50/50.

Level -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 4:58:45 PM)

Peter, I saw an article somewhere that Rivera told managment that whether Torre stayed or not would play a huge role in whether he'd stay; I bet  you're right about the others, as well.

A-Rod, I think he's gone, no matter what.

Well, Bobby Cox has done a whole lot with what he has been given (aside from Chipper and Texeira, what did he have this season?), which is a damn sight less than Torre had to work with..

And to whoever said Cuban needs to buy the Cubs, YES..And the Bulls should trade for Kobe, too, but I don't see either happening.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Torre is out with the Yankees (10/18/2007 6:11:17 PM)

I agree with most of that.  Torre made a lot of on-field tactical mistakes, and I never understood why he didn't catch more flak for it.  He was completely out-managed in the 2003 World Series.  How do you lose a World Series where you score more runs than the other team AND never use your Hall-of-Fame closer?  Torre was horrible at managing bullpens and blew out one good arm after another through overuse.  And his moves started to become very routine and predictable over the second half of his twelve-year run.  You always knew when Giambi was going to be replaced for a pinch-runner; you always knew when Mariano was NOT coming in; etc.

But I don't know that they'll ever find a manager better suited to the Bronx Zoo.  Torre was magnificent at shielding his team from the glare of the New York media.  I think he should have said more when Sheffield and Womack and that other piss-ant accused him of being a racist, but it was his prerogative not to address it.

Kobe is teetering awfully close into becoming a cancer; don't know if he'd be good for Chicago or not.
