Does anyone know how to get rid of fruit flies?  I know I could google it, but this way (ie asking all of you freaks) is much more fun.

Are you talking about crop protection or clearing them out of the kitchen?

As tiny as fruit flies are those electric fly swatters work pretty well on them (the model I have does at least). Just sort of gently sweep the air in their vicinity and listen for the teltale snap.

Take out the trash, clean up anything that they might eat (and they eat more than fruit) and sterilize your plumbing drains, either with bleach or with alcohol. The little buggars seem to like whatever they find down the drain, bathroom as well as kitchen.

Aha...I didn't thinkof the drains.  I'll try that since I've become really diligent about any food on the counters.

Remember, time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.

bleach the drains, cover anything liquid/sweet/trash. A way to catch and kill the live ones is to cover a shallow glass of red wine with plastic wrap, and poke holes into the wrap, large enough for them to get through. They get in, but can't get out.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Fruit Flies (10/18/2007 7:39:28 PM)

I hate them!

For some odd reason commercial bug killers don't seem to work. I have always thought its a drain thing too but I know one thing.....
The frost is coming.... That will kill the pestilence until next spring!

You could give them names and try to think of them as (eccentric) pets.

Owner59 -> RE: Fruit Flies (10/18/2007 8:04:11 PM)

Yup.

1st,get rid of the supper ripe food you have,all of it.(they come from the skin of the fruit,especially bananas)

Then start w/ a sticky strip or one of those sticky ribbons.Maybe a couple.

Next,during the course of a few days,spray them as they cluster(they tend to cluster),with some Windex.Put the nozzle tip as fine as it will spray.As they die,wipe them up.Come back in a hour,and repeat.

They`ll be gone in a couple/three days.

Rotate your fruit/veggies more often,and throw skins and peals out(out-side) ,every evening.

check around if you have empty beer bottles about.

they thrive in the half beer-half goober backwash that is left behind.

if your starting plants in water check the water, check the drip pan under your refrigerator, open a window and let them out or my fav let a few spiders in, check under your sink for leaks and wash out garbage cans

ownedgirlie -> RE: Fruit Flies (10/18/2007 10:04:33 PM)

Well in California they like to fly planes overhead, dumping Malathion on everyone...but that might be a little overkill for your situation...

Well, three failed attempts;

First time I ran in, a group of hefty, semi feminine individuals in heavy make-up,
kept grabbing me and plopping me on their heads, teasing my fur into all sorts
of fabulous hairstyles.

Second time, as I waited in line to make my move, a herd of hysterical peta
pushers threw buckets of tomato sauce on me while chanting, "No fur, no fur"!

My third attempt found me swept up by the scruff of my collar by a burley
bouncer as he grimaced and shoved my face into the "No Pets Allowed" sign.

Undeterred, I rally forth, someday to rid the world of the pesky fruit fly.
