FullCircle -> RE: Humiliated or Humbled (10/21/2007 4:46:28 AM)

The number of topics here that seem to engender discussion about the meaning of words I’m astonished by. Are we sure this site isn’t the OED site? Humiliation/humbled? For starters ‘humbled’ has various meanings and maybe some of those have a positive light when compared to ‘humiliated’.

She was humiliated by the presence of her master.
She was humbled by the presence of her master.

Words have meanings and sometimes when you string them together in a sentence as above you can see they look wrong. Beyond that you can use any set of words to express how you feel you like. It’s all semantics and I don’t really care because someone will always disagree with things said. People can’t even agree what slave means or how this varies from that of a sub.[:D]

to me humiliation is humiliation,i get the buzz from feeling i have humiliated another person,i agree it is by the person's own consent,because without it it can't happen,i wont go up to just anybody and humiliate them,so even when am humiliating someone,i am still respecting them,so maybe you are right,but i sure do enjoy it[8D]

Neither one looks wrong.  Both of those sentences are meaningful, but they mean different things.  In the case of the first sentence, imagine a slave who is fired on the job, and is humiliated by the fact that her master was present to see it happen.  In the case of the second sentence, imagine a slave observing her master at work, and feeling humbled by his...I don't know...his awesomeness.

But the OP wasn't talking about anything like this.  She said she loves "wallowing in the figurative slime and mud at the dominant's bidding," and was asking whether it's better to call this being "humbled" or being "humiliated."  In a case like that, the words come very close to each other.  Yes, we've observed in this thread that "humbled" can have positive connotations, and I was saying that maybe "humiliated" is better for precisely that reason, since it highlights the paradox that she exults at something most other people find degrading.

Perhaps the reaction is not really one of embarassment perhaps like in me the embarassment reaction is the same as the "excited."  I find when I get excited, I have the same basic physical reaction (flushing, hyperventiliation, pounding heart, ect...) Just a thought.  Perhaps you are neither humbled nor humiliated.  Although I prefer to use the word humbled.

I have been told i have a tendency to want to make my language more flowery and pretty. To me it seems as though this is your objective ... not that there is anything wrong with that. Either way .. i hope you have fun "wallowing in the figurative slime and mud at the dominant’s bidding" ~ I so love this phrase  [:D]

Humiliation = Degrading

In a rank based relationship, I cannot see how having ”a reminder of ones position to another” wouldn’t be satisfying to someone that seeks a subordinate role.

If you took a survey of a thousand people on the street, it would be very rare to find someone that took pride in wearing a collar like the family pet.  They would find it degrading and humiliating… unlike the pride a sub/slaves feels when they wear one.

In my opinion, it is almost impossible to conduct a power exchange relationship without acts of humiliation as would be viewed from the “thousand people on the street” perspective.  I feel that when subordinates have issues with humiliation it’s because of their own underlying control issues, a misplaced sense of pride or a misunderstanding of their role in the first place.

I am generally unsure lol ... i just mean that humble is a much more "flowery" word than humiliate. It softens the edges of the word. I have been accused a time or two of trying to polish the edges of some words that i think are harsh. Perhaps im not making any sense though.
