No debt. I've got a modest house that's paid for and I paid cash for my car too. I suppose my life may seem better if I went into debt to get a bigger house or fancier car, but I don't care enough about that having that stuff (or impressing people with status symbols) to do it. I'm far happier not being in debt than I would be if I had more "stuff" along with debt.

im in debt for my house.....if i didnt have a house payment id be upper lower middle class..

This makes me larf. Not clear how debt affects your social status unless you only use weath/money as an indicator. Dont forget that the house is a financial asset, its just that you dont own it....yet.

In the UK say a good free lance plasterer or plumber would almost certainly be wealthier than most  high school teachers but would not be considered so high in the social pecking order.

pahunkboy -> RE: Debt and quality of life (10/21/2007 10:37:41 AM)

It is interesting how many people are waking up to the debt scam.  Fancy isnt freedom or happiness. THe best happiness is not being a slave to the banks. All those sky scapers are build with someones cash.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Debt and quality of life (10/21/2007 10:55:17 AM)

I've a tiny chunk of debt left on my car which will be done by the end of the year- but I think that's good debt as a younger person because it helped establish a credit rating and is something I could use more of.  After this though, other than the typical paying all regular monthly balances, I don't intend to have any significant debt for awhile.  I am hoping my car will last at least five years to save up to buy the next one with no or far less debt that this one (and if not the five years, then at least I'll have some chunk saved to cover the necessity of another one).

I honestly have no desire to buy a house.  I'm quite comfy in my apartment and all that it provides to me.  I know people go on and on about equity and owning stuff- but most often they are just as much in debt as they are out, and they have to deal with regular upkeep of their property.  I'm just not into that and find that saving into 401(k), IRAs, and other investment portfolios gives me the feeling of security I need.

I'm very debt averse and live a lifestyle that sometimes means I don't have the "fun" stuff, but also means I don't have the worry or anxiety of paying bills.

Some debt is very worthwhile, say for buying a home.

This is often taken as a given, but is it really worthwhile? What are the pros and cons?

I was having sex in the swimming pool yesterday without a single worry about being "caught". Pro! [:)]

Dave, we have this thing over here called "Dogging". I thought it was a worldwide phenomenon, until I read an article claiming it is peculiarly British. 'Long story short: people drive to car parks and fuck strangers in cars and outside of cars. I mean, in droves...it's like migrating birds. Moral of the story: you don't need to buy a house to fuck.

Some whores have standards, particularly ones that want to marry you so you can go to work and buy a house so they can claim 50% when they decide your boring because you at work all the time.

Mind you, I bet ha\lf of those that go dogging are married whores.

Are you in debt? How has that added or subtracted from your quality of life?

How does being in debt (or not being in debt) make you feel?

My view is affected by three things;

Modern life and the ability to take part in it, is predicated on the notion that one will require recourse to credit.

One may as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb.

One should live for today, not knowing what tomorrow might bring - but plan for tomorrow, just in case.

So yes, I have several credit cards and pretty large debt - but not unmanageably so. I'm not going to go without, nor more importantly have my UMs go without (as I did) on the promise of something better in a tomorrow I or they might not see.

I pay my debt off when I can, and enjoy the credit I have when I want to.

The secret to living with debt is to do just that - live with it. Dont worry over it, dont fret - bankrupt for 1k is no different to bankrupt for 100k, if it happens. Although I'll admit, the presence of adequate social provision here in the UK, should the worst happen, does provide comfort there.

If you cant pay it back, have absolutely no worry whatever over those to whom the money is owed - serves 'em right, f'in leeches.

Yeah, well, fuck 'em. If they're looking for the trappings and a magazine family, then move along because there's nothing happening here.

Was it Elvis who sang "only fools rush in"? Never a truer word/s spoken, and I have no sympathy for men who get married, divorced and cry about the outcome: 'takes two to tango, and you make your own bed and lie in it. That's life: win some, lose some. The rules are clear upfront.

CuriousLord -> RE: Debt and quality of life (10/21/2007 1:12:24 PM)

Money's power.  Life, really.  It represents resources- resources that could be..
-feeding the starving
-finding cures for the sick
-inventing medicines for the incurable
-building homes for the homeless
-inventing new technologies for us all
-cleaning up the environment
-improving nutrition and food quality, cleaning up drinking water
and, ultimately..
-allowing everyone to have what they need so that there's no more need to fight over it.

Having money means being able to..
-know where your next meal's coming from
-get the healthcare needed for you and your family
-take vactions and relax with friends and family
-have a comfortable roof over your head

When it comes right down to it, having plenty of money doesn't outright ensure happiness, but it really helps.

Raechard -> RE: Debt and quality of life (10/21/2007 1:20:57 PM)

In a minute someone will post something saying that debt is an unproven concept, another will discuss at long length the meaning of the word debt and someone else will say that just because you are into this debt doesn’t mean everyone is.

I’m in relative debt: i.e. I’m financially stable, and in the black but I’m going to have to work until I’m dead to live until I’m dead.[8|]

for me, the pro is definately the tax break-my house payment is cheaper than many pay for rent-and i get my own lil acre of paradise

That you have to mow every week in the summer [&o]... and when the oil burner breaks down... the septic needs pumping.... roof needs replacing.... exterior needs painting .... endless list that all lead down the same path...................DEBT

riding mower and headphones......dunno what an oil burner is.....septic is about 250 every 7 years or so.......vinyl siding never needs painting....luckily, i am good at preventative maintenance so ive had no major repairs.....and its worth it to be able to tell folks go away if i wanna.....

Maybe you don't have to, but a malesub ain't getting anything in this world without assets! [&o]

So true. A woman is for bed and not for life. If you get that the wrong way round you will end up paying for it. A wife is an expensive prostitute. I'm not much of a Catherine McKinnon fan but she got that right. If you want to stay out of debt, stay out of marriage.

That's such nice commentary.
It works both ways.  I've known men who are horrible at handling money.
You just have to be careful and make sure you safeguard what you bring into a marriage.

No debt whatsoever. Paid off house 2 yrs ago. Paid it off in 12yrs on a 30yr fixed. Put every extra cent on the principle for 12 yrs and didn't buy bullshit items I didn't need like toys, etc. All toys/vehicles paid for and I didn't buy them unless I could pay for them upfront. Never have owned a credit card (that's half the secret). Best secure feeling in the world......

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Debt and quality of life (11/11/2007 5:25:58 PM)

I am in debt, yup. I am slowly working my way out from under it and I am almost there. Being in debt affects my quality of life, in the fact that most my money is already spoken for, with bills like rent, and internet, and now any spare cash I have after that is spent on debt reduction, and I am almost broke every month.

I feel frsuterated by the lack of milage my money gets, being in debt, and I've learned I have to stop being so generous when Ic an't afford to be. A lot of my debt is cause I wanted to be nice and help out.

I am not in debt but I am on disability…agent orange and arthritis put me where I am now. My income dropped by 2/3’s almost over night. I am lucky that I had my house and vehicle paid off. How do I feel?…My future terrifies me…will I be able to pay for meds…insurance…taxes and still be able to enjoy life? Will I be able to work again? Will I be able to keep my Internet connection…lol… It is no fun and I see no light at the end of the tunnel.

But the above only gets me down when I have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of steak.

I can take it
Butch
