So I moved and am trying to reorganize and figure out where everything is and what should happen to it.  The 3 general piles are #1 stuff, #2 junk and #3 crap.  The reasoning is that stuff is worth keeping, junk goes to a donation box and crap goes in the garbage.

So how do you sort your material goodies?  Do you and your significant other(s) argue and fight about what qualifies as what and where it should go?  Ever toss something and wish you had kept it?  Do you frequent flea markets and garage sales?

if it's anything I haven't used or worn in two years, it's outta here.  occasionally I might miss something, but not enough to break my own rule.

I dislike garage sales, unless there's furniture to be had.  I don't frequent them, and I don't have them, but I know people love them...I'm just not one of them.

I used to hang onto things for sentimental reasons.  Then the ex husband emptied the house of everything I've ever owned, all the way down to my baptism gown, and just like that, I had none of it anymore.

He saved me from having to pack, anyway!!

Things are things are things.  I don't keep a lot now, just the basics.  If I'm not using it now or in the next few months, it goes.  I am finding it really liberating.

I am an organizational freak...there is a place for everything...i detest clutter with every ounce of my being. If it has not been used or worn in a 12 month period, it is given away or trashed.

I could be very comfortable in a room with only a chair...two books....some music playing...one picture on the wall...a few pillows...the kittenz.

As of yet, i have never regreted anything i have thrown away or given away.

I live in an appliance box on ten acres of sand in the middle of the Mojave desert.  I am surrounded with tons of rusty iron junque and I could not be happier if I had good sense.  More than one lady has commented that if I could not reach out in the middle of the night and touch something rusty I would go into withdrawal.
I have lived here for more than twenty years.  There is no trash pick up as I live two miles from the nearest paved road.  No...I have never been to the dump.  Everything is either used or recycled...no exceptions.

i moved back into my house just over a year ago. i still have 6 boxes that havent been unpacked. most are collectables that i have been hording since god was a child. some of those dolls are worth a couple thousand, some arent worth the plastic they are sealed in. but to me they are all worth something. my house is nearly maxed out. someday i am sure i will manage to build enough shelves to get everything out of the building, but i am not holding my breath. the mess is organized and not going anywhere. remodeling allows for some clutter build up..hehe..

We have some things that i refer to as "archival-grade crap"... Things which have no value, no use, and may never be looked at again, but can never be thrown away. And by "some things", i mean a double row of 33-gallon plastic bins stacked up in the garage...

Since we have a decent amount of space for storage at our place, i don't throw away nearly as much as i used to... As the cost of living gets higher, and goods are made less durable, i've started recycling, rebuilding, and occasionally even inventing things instead, and raw materials are key.

When we moved, i think it took four trips with a 25' moving truck

With very limited time and high gas prices, i don't go to garage sales, but Craigslist is definitely my friend... i've picked up several pieces of furniture, tools, and various other stuff.

exactly my approach too. If its still useful to someone, it goes to them (charity shops etc), otherwise its reused for something else or goes to the dump.

Naturally, my approach didnt go down well with my ex - all other factors aside I dont think I could have stood it much longer. She is a born hoarder and every room in her house is packed full of stuff that never gets used, and is unuseable anyway because (a) she couldnt possibly find it if she wanted it, and (b) she doesnt know what she's got as its been buried under other junk for years.

Unforunantly I share my piece of property with two couples who were raised on depression era beliefs. Dammit dont throw that away we may need it some day....so...my barn is full of the little plastic cups that come in laundry detergent boxes, and ball mason jars full of the buttons off of depends undergarments (no..Im not joking)....I humor them all, because I know Ive only got a few years left....when they all cack off Im renting a huge construction dumpster to be placed in my front yard. It wil lprobably have to be filled, taken away, and replaced 5 or 6 times before Im done.....In this family, when you run out of room in your barn for storage, you just build a bigger barn. My uncle behind me has a barn large enough he can park 4 tractor trailers, 2 full sized RVs and a boat...and still have room left over for extra junk. The majority of whats around here will go into the dumpeter, Im sure some will get sent to goodwill, Im gonna have a ball with ebay, and there are a few items that I will keep. I finally got my grandma to walk around with me one day with a laptop computer and a digital camera and we recorded what everything is and whether or not that interesting glass bottle really is worth something or if she just thought it was "pretty"....I also got my grandfather to do the same thing with the tools in his shed...he's got hundreds of HIS grandaddy's tools...The house on the other side of me wont be so bad, it burned down 5 years ago....how in the hell the only concrete block house on the property burned to the ground and the two woodframe houses right next to it stayed fine Ill never know....but it definantly cut down on the amount of clutter Im going to have to sift through sometime int he next 10 years. She rebuilt the house using exactly the same floor plan and went right back to filling it back up....although at least she's filling it up with stuff thats worth something this time...she's got some amazing antique furniture I cant wait to get my hands on. In fact Ill probably just move in and level my house with a bulldozer....lol.....

I long for the day that the only possession I have is money in the bank. The old saying that possessions own you is true. I need to get rid of that light bulb that doesn’t fit in any of the light fixtures I have only to buy a new lampshade and then find it requires the light bulb I just tossed away.

Having helped a friend sort through a house where a pack rat lived, (and fed half the rodent population of CT- loved him anyway) died and worked, my mantra in going through this house was- "When in doubt- throw it out."  Having said that- having thinned both my vinyl and book collection over the years, I do find myself missing some of what I gave away or tossed- occasionally enough to buy it on CD or find it on biblio.com.  But given how cheap paperbacks are for the most part- it's not worth hoarding- consider that each book has to pay rent- do you really want to move it?

Ghia,

Your older relatives sound like mine!  The people who lived through the Great Depression are pack rats extrodinaire!
I have actually tried to toss stuff out only to have someone retrieve it and scold me.

I agree Vendaval, there seems to be one generation where packrats were made by the hundreds......I love going through their stuff though, its amazing sometimes what you can find! My great uncle passed away a few years ago, he's one of the local "if you run out of room, just build a bigger barn" types around here. Some of the stuff he had packed away was astounding. Some of it was utter garbage, but occasionally we'd find something and just go.."wow"....

Now, my other grandmother, I finally was able to get her to let me go ahead and go through stuff when she moved into a smaller apartment after my grandfather died. She had kept every reciept she ever recieved. Im talking gas tickets from the 50's....
