Communication is powerful..it can create  change

Being confusing is weak, it only creates derision..[;)]

sunshinemiss -> RE: spelling (12/28/2007 7:34:44 PM)

Gosh, I feel both ways about this.

I want to understand what the person is saying and the spelling is not really that important, nor is the grammar.  English is, after all, one of the most complicated languages to learn because of all the exceptions to the rules (i before e except after c except in the word ancient for example).  I also speak Spanish and some Korean where the speaking rules match with the written rules.  There are one or two symbols/letters that aren't pronounced, but everything else is.  Spelling is really hard in English.  So it is the content that matters.

That said, yes spelling matters to me.  I don't want to admit it, I think it's prejudice, but it's still true.  I want someone who writes me a first email that is pretty much correct.  It tells me that this email is important and has been sent with some thought behind it.  So the spelling represents something.  The spelling itself is not important - the message it gives is what is important.

After the first interaction and we have a bond, I don't really care.  Please, though, please try to make a good impression with the first email.

As for forum posts - we all type fast and typos don't really count for misspellings in my book.  Why would anybody correct forum posts?  That seems a little holier than thou.

peace.

Personally, I'm a spelling and grammar nazi. It's an annoying trait I have. I try to hide it from others and cry in the bathrooms at work so no one sees. I'm joining a support group soon.

LMAO...this was funny [:)]

i'm kinda big on the whole spelling/grammar thing too...But, i am not the greatest typist in the world either, so i could give concessions to typos.

One of the first things that struck me with my Daddy was the fact that he used and knew how to spell alot of words that i just didn't know. No one since school had done that, and i was like little Miss Spelling Bee and stuf (i've gotten kinda dumb since meeting my Daddy though)...What i love is that i can actually ask him what a word means, he can spell it...and then do the thing my Mom always did and make me look it up :) this always makes me laugh...and i've learned new words.

recalcitrant was the first word he taught me in one of our very first conversations...i was a goner from then on.[:)]

I got some of that in my well at the farm, I put in several filters and use lots of salt in the softner, and the water isnt so recalcitrant anymore, hell---
it aint hardly even fractious.

Just a random question/ thought. recently while perving a few Dominant profiles, i happened to notice, the spelling was awful. i couldn't help but notice, it was that bad ( not one or two hard to spell words here i am talking simple words a 5th grader should know) the other part of this to is, if you are a Dominant, wouldnt spelling be important? Do you think it matters?
Do you think it reflects badly and would you try and politely correct the spelling mistakes?
does it really make a difference? if you are supposed to be the one in control wouldnt that have a negative light? since this is a a way to meet people, doesnt the profile make the first impression for you?

Yes.

(By the way...paragraphs work for me as well).

Consider "too" while you're thinking about it (it's a thought).

(Apostrophes are also well intentioned).

If you are able to hum the Niebulungen Leid whilst gobbling my massive manhood (no amaturish karoke type shit), spelling would (for that space of time) be of trivial concern to all of us.

Seriously,

i'm talking with a Dom through here that has a hard time spelling, but i don't take it personally. Some people didn't learn to spell when they were young for some reason or another. But we're great friends

Cheers to you ! Everyone has strong points and not so strong points! Glad to see that some people still do not judge a boook by the way it is spelt in the title!

junecleaver -> RE: bad spelnig (12/28/2007 10:53:34 PM)

Before I decided to study Spanish, I was a decent speller.  It is hard to spend all day writing and thinking in one language and then come home to use another very similar yet different language the correct way---especially when it comes to spelling.  As my proficiency in the Spanish language increases, my English spelling abilities seem to decrease.  It's kind of odd.

If I can pick out your spelling mistakes, you know you are spelling poorly.  I do not have a lot of room to judge, but I do have some.  Spelling is important.  As my middle school English teacher use to say, 'A word is not truly yours until you can spell it and define it.'  Poor spelling is unattractive and I don't take people who chronically misspell simple words as seriously as those who spell well.

mnottertail -> RE: bad spelnig (12/28/2007 11:07:38 PM)

this is why I hang with one syllable words or run on words.

Ron (make a couple syllables outta that motherfucker, kids)

No, you just put words like 'promulgation' in your sig. [;)]

SilentTigresss -> RE: spelling (12/29/2007 6:40:20 AM)

It matters to me...alot. So much, that i have actually written to the person and suggested the correct spelling.  :)
Not sure just how much my winning runner-up in a spelling bee has to do with it- a loonggggg time ago,  [:D]  but i do find myself not willing to explore opportunities with that person. Perhaps it is judgement, and to each their own, but for me it is important.

LittleMeganV -> RE: spelling (12/29/2007 6:48:35 AM)

I am pretty much just responding to the OP, honestly because I didn't want to read 10 pages. =o Anyways I think spelling is very important, and as a "self proklaimd speln perfesuhonal" I can say that it does take some effort to check your own work. I am actually a very bad speller, and I think poor grammar and spelling reflects oneself and on the statements you are trying to get across. Though admittedly my biggest pet peeve is capitalization.

I think if a Dom/me can't take the time to spell check their own work when they should be "setting the best foot forward" then you should wonder what else they might not bother to check on/blow off.

HalloweenWhite -> RE: spelling (12/29/2007 10:40:43 AM)

I notice spelling too, I think it reveals something about the writer. Thing iis though, spelling might just be off becuase their keyboard isn't as responsive as it used to be-the keys on My keyboard stick sometimes letters are mising from a word which I have to re-type, or they may be writing it in a hurry so take slightly less care than they would have liked to take.
