After responding to another thread this morning on the subject I got to wondering what exactly is the criteria one has to meet to be considered a BBW? Is it a specific weight? 200 lbs? 300 lbs? Is it a size? 16? 18? 20? At what point exactly does one classify themselves as being a BBW? Also, do men view the criteria differently than women?

Just wondering how people determine for themself if they meet the criteria or not, especially seeing as so many women have a skewed self image and think that they are heavy even when they are not.

I don't think you can really assign a number definition to the term because it's going to vary from woman to woman. I'm almost six feet tall and back before I had children, when I had the time to exercise many hours a day, my ideal weight was between 165 and 175 pounds. I was a size 14 but was routinely mistaken for a smaller size because of my height and proportion. At no time did I match up with that height/weight chart they put out as being the ideal, being heavier than I was "supposed" to be. But when I tried to diet down below a size 14, dropping to 145lbs. and a size 8, I looked terrible. I just didn't weigh enough for my frame.

So numbers are deceptive. Right now, at a size 18/20 and 200lbs. I could probably qualify myself as a BBW if I were at all inclined to leave the weight on. For health reasons, I'm not, so I don't have the attitude needed to accept myself as such.

I have no idea what determines it. All I know is that some people say I'm thick and some say bbw so I guess I'm borderline at size 16/18

I have no idea what the criteria *should* be or *is* ... I know that I fall under that heading because I'm approximately 5'8" and 250lbs - even if no one believes it without seeing the scale (everyone places me at about 200 ... even my mother). Depending on the cut of the clothing, I wear from a size 20 to a 26 ... although my 26s are quickly becoming WAY too big for me - yay for belts LOL.

Holly also falls into that catagory at 5'6" and about 215 - she wears from 18 to 22 (mostly 20s though).

We both know that we are overweight - Holly has been trying to stop gaining for awhile now, and I think she has actually lost some finally (this is a problem that has been going on for well over a year). I have lost about 50# in the last year or so - bouncing back and forth a bit, unfortunately - but it's life. We are both happy with how we are, in general, but when I can't walk when I get home from work, that's a problem that needs to be fixed, so to minimize the damage that has been done to my knee cartilage over the years through accidents and falling on the ice [:'(] I'm losing weight - she has a heart condition that no one can figure out what it is exactly, but they all tell her that she will feel better if she loses weight, so she's trying.

However, neither of us will ever fit the BMI chart ideal, and don't intend to try. We are going to lose enough weight that we both feel better and then maintain. I have no intentions of changing my body for anyone but me, and if someone else has a problem with that .... well, it's their problem. I will never be thin - I don't think I would be happy being thin. Personally, I think I'd look anorexic and sickly if I lost enough weight to even get to the maximum "ideal" on the BMI chart ... so I don't intend to try. I just want to be able to walk after day 4 of my long stretch at work.

Hard to say, I would say "fairly above their average body type" but that doesn't say much.

I don't like the term bbw and see it as a way for people to try and feel better about themselves when they really aren't happy instead of just being able to say they are fat and happy with it.

Erin, I believe it is anyone over a size 16.
Different people look different in different sizes duh (to myself).
When I've been to BBW parties, most of the women look at me like "what are you doing here?"
So it's different for everyone; Blacks have what they call "thick"=not too big (>250 lbs), and not small. M

What is wrong with anyone using any word to describe self if it makes them feel better?
Why should they adopt what they feel is a bad/ugly/demeaning word and learn to cope with it?
Everyone in the world uses whatever is at their disposal to deal with life and stress (better friends, family, drugs/alcohol, psychotherapy, screwing around, clothes, shoes). It would seem to me, that using the word BBW, if it makes anyone feel better about self is a fairly safe thing to do. M

See... this is where the difficulties set in, because a size 16 in the UK is a size 14 in the usa... just a thought.

Actualy it's supposed to mean big breasted women. and anything above average is big. I'm a 44DD And I have always been big. In 4th grade I was a 34C and I was a skinny kid

Hmmmm, I have never heard it used in that manner. I have always thought it meant Big Beautiful Woman. So are some using it meaning one thing and some using it meaning another?

And - there is only ten pounds from being size 14 to being size 16 - So really... the average american woman is only ten pounds from being a BBW. However, I always interperted it as being size 20 or higher. Hmph. There is probably no real, or defined answer to it. Maybe Dove.com - in their true beauty campaign has some info!!

BBW Magazine was geared for 16-plus sized women.

Hrm, I wonder, comparativly what the average dress size was in the 70's ^.^

As far as I know, it was a size 12. I thought it still was until you(someone?) posted that it was now a 14. The problem these days is that there is so much vanity sizing that a person could wear an 8 in one brand and a 12 in another. Who the heck can tell what size they wear?

Also just because it's the average size doesn't mean it's the BEST size. I think if the US had an average size 16 I think that would be a BAD thing.

For example, if the current average scoring for a pro-basketball team per game was 30 points, that wouldn't be a good thing to shoot for.
