Status: offline 		What is it about car dealerships and sales people in particular? What gene do they have that gives them the notion that they have to try and bullshit a person?

I have purchased over half a dozen new cars in my lifetime and it is ALWAYS the same bullshit. There is a part of it I love, putting them through hell when I walk away, leaving them feeling like they just lost the sale. But we all know, that in the end, they will capitulate.

But still, the bullshit lines get old. I cannot stand liars and when someone that is trying to sell me something that expensive, lies........Well, they just lost my business. So now we start the process over with another dealer selling the same car with all the same options of selling that the first one had.

What a total waste of time......

I know they do. Here's a quickie little story for a time, so long ago, when I was married.

I bought a new car from a small family dealer, and got a really nice deal on it. A few months later, when my wife was looking to replace her PoS, we went into the dealer, but she didn't like them (they gave her the wrong "vibes"). We went up the street to another dealer selling the same product, where she started negotiating on her own.

I kind of stayed off in the car, as she asked me to do, because she wanted to deal on her own. She came out, told me their offer and asked my opinion. I reminded her of the deal I got with the other dealer, so she went it and counter-offered. She came back... they refused her deal.

I went in, explained that I was shopping for a car for my wife, selected the car she was after, and offered the deal that I got at the other dealer; the exact same deal that my wife had just counter-offered. They accepted and we started the paperwork. That was the point that she needed to sign the paperwork, so I (re)introduced my wife to them. The look on their faces was priceless... they got caught in what could have been a sexual discrimination thing. When that was hinted, they even managed to knock another couple of hundred dollars off the price of the car.

So yes... I do believe that there is sexual discrimination.

Status: offline 		oh yeah, most definitely they treat women differently than men, cause for some reason there is this belief that men inherently are smarter about cars than women...the repair people are the same...one time i went into a repair shop & asked for a certain repair to be done on my car...they told me i needed much more than what i actually did need & said it would be $160 (this was a very long time ago)...i took a male friend in who knew nothing about cars or repairs, gave him a script & the did what i wanted them to do & charged $3.....

Status: offline 		The last vehicle I bought was used. From a private party. I did ask if the junk could be removed from it. -I did not haggle on the price. It cost $200, needed tires and on oil change.

WHats more- it is a truck. So now I can haul. yayyyyyyyy!

Status: offline 		WE are getting ready to purchase Diane a jeep, I told her to wear her short leather skirt,tall black boots and a low cut blouse without a bra,Get the price down low and we both will go back later to check it out,,YES women are treated different not only by car dealers but in the rest of the world...bounty

Status: offline 		I finally just contacted a dealership in Cedar Rapids I have purchased from in the past, one that sells the same car I was looking to purchase here in Iowa City. I will get the car for $2,000.00 less, get exactly what I want and then some, with no "transfer vehicle fee" paid up front, AND they will gladly deliver it to me here in Iowa City, at work, when it comes in.

I gave the young man permission to call the other dealership and say, "THBBBBBBBBBBBBBTTTTT!!!!!!!!"

It just all came down to this. I know I could have played the whole game, gotten them down to where I wanted to be as far as price, etc etc etc.... But WHY??? Why should I have to? Why should I waste my time? I just decided I wasn't in the mood. So, I sent off an email, got a phone call within 10 minutes, explained more what I want and got a "yes ma'am, I will be happy to help you. Please allow me to make a few phones calls. When, and how, would you like me to get back to you?" An hour later, I was given several vehicle options and a question about how they can make it as easy on me as possible. We chatted for a few more minutes and.......tadaaaaa. No muss, no fuss.

When I was looking for my first car, I found one that I fell in love with; I sent my bf at the time in to take a look at it and check it out, I went back made an offer and the guy quoted me one price and had quoted my bf another [we both got our quotes IN WRITING]; when we went back together, I introduced the dealer to my bf, the police officer.   The look on the guy's face was priceless.
 
We ended up going to another dealership and finding  better car for less with better service.
 
I have been lucky with mechanics, my maden name is the name of an old car company so its presumed that I know about cars, which I do, and since I have guy friends and my past boyfriends have known about cars, I'm not naive.  My last mechanic was even at my wedding to my exhusband.

Status: offline 		When I was looking for my first truck, I had the hardest time getting male salespeople to show me trucks or answer questions....they kept wanting to sell me "cute" little sedans.  I walked off of six lots before finding a Ford dealer with a woman salesperson...and her demo vehicle was a truck!  Like the men just couldn't believe I'd actually want a truck....and one with a manual transmission yet!  I hate trying to buy a car....when my ex and I went looking for my car, the salesman kept talking to him, NOT me....finally, I stood up, told me ex that if the guy didn't start talking to me about the car I was buying, that I'd go elsewhere to get one....that got his attention!

Reparis are just as bad.....I had to replace the brakes on my car, and before I took it to a shop, I called my dad and asked him what exactly I'd need for the job.  He told me to get the rotors turned and JUST the pads replaced.....sure enough, the guy started spouting stuff about the calipers and brake lines and the master cylinder...this on a car that wasn't even two years old!  I told him exactly what he could do, and that anything done above and beyond that was coming out of HIS pocket, not mine.  What would have been close to $700 ended up being just about $120......HUGE difference!

The best car buying experience I had was when I got the financing thru my credit union UP FRONT....walked in to the dealership, told them I already had the money, it was time to talk deal.....I'd already done research on the vehicle I wanted, so I had an idea about price......not having to play the finance deal game made it so much easier.  I'd suggest that anyone looking for a car try doing that......I got them to knock off almost $7000 from the cost of the car.  AND I was in and out in less than an hour and a half!  The best part was when I told the salesguy to automatically knock off the 3% they tack on for the dealer holdback charges....Edmonds.com is a great place to check out!  They give you the lowdown on all the dealer tricks!

Sometimes, it almost easier to walk!

Status: offline 		Two steps to buying a car/truck and avoiding the sales BS:

1) Have a good idea what it is you want and do the research before you walk on the lot.
2) Play Offense not Defense. Go on the attack and you'll see how quickly they back down.

I only shop for a car when I'm already pissed off. When Smiling Bob Gooddeal approaches me, I don't shake his hand. I look him in the eye and tell him - "Cut the crap. I'm buying an (Altima, Civic, Wrangler - insert vehicle name here) TODAY. I can either buy it here or from one of your competitors. Which do you prefer?"

Then just shut up. Don't say another word. They will stutter and stammer and do their very best to get you what you want.

The thing is, though... for the most part, the salespeople don't actually know much about cars themselves. Cars are just a rung on the sales ladder between cell phones and real estate, and the important thing to learn is not the details of the product, but the tactics for closing the sale. i've had salespeople tell me outright lies about the cars i was looking at- fuel capacity, ABS, towing, engine statistics- and i'm a big, grease-under-the-fingernails, biker-looking dude with a tool cabinet that rivals that of most of their shop techs. i KNOW cars.

And i don't know why you have to play the "game" to buy a car. It's one of my pet peeves... Buying a car should be a fun, exciting process, and i always end up feeling pissed off and resentful because i know i'm not a good negotiator. It seems to me that once you get handed off to the "numbers guy", you should be free to bring in your own trained negotiator to do all the heavy-jawbone shit. Or just let me order the damned thing off the internet already and cut out the fast-talking jerkoffs who are doing nothing but jacking up the price to pay their own salaries

I mean - I now get priority if my car breaks down. When it did break down, the tow guy was happy to take my car exactly where I wanted, not just where he should have. When it was repaired, I got one heck of a discount (I checked) - and generally the guys with the greasy overalls cant do enough.

But agreed; all of this good stuff comes about because women are preferred to be seen as helpless. Put that with the male instinct to protect the poor helpless woman and an appreciative smile or two later, we get the A game.

Status: offline 		What made me chuckle when I went to buy my Pilot was when I asked to look under the hood. The salesman asked me "Why would you want to do that?"  I gave him a nice smile and explained that I do check my own fluid levels, battery etc. and I wanted to see how accessible they would be to me. He then smiled and replied "Your the first woman in my entire career that ever asked to look under the hood."  Sometimes I think its a case of not enough women showing that we are not helpless and that we do have an interest in the automobiles that we purchase.

As far as negotiating a price, I go in there with a price in my head and I stick to it, if they start trying to jerk me around I walk away. These guys are counting on you to fall in love with their product and your feeling of "I have to have it!"    Nope not me, I will walk away and go to another dealership.

Status: offline 		Well first of all to be a car salesman you have to pass a soul check test, if your not souless they have to preform a soul extraction involving goats and signing a contract with the devil, its all highly scintific. Then the void is filled with greed, and they have to have hourly Rhiectamies otherwise they'd break their nose every time they turn a corner to fast. Basicly it all comes down to the american Quanity over Quality motto of  "Screw the customer with high prices for cheap shit."
