Status: offline 		I agree. The scene is very psychological here. being collared, getting collared...it's really I think the word you would use is awaesome.

The cultural differences I belive stem from the 'Watson' behavioural statrt to the pstchological world view verses the 'Freudian' sunconscious drive. Now I know that Frued is 'disqualified' in post modernist thinking but nevertheless it's far more subtley behaviourist in the UK.

I often pull into a half and half or a blend of United Kingdom's BDSM and or M/s and or D/s and the United States' BDSM, M/s and or D/s.
 
The United Kingdom more familiar with a monarchy system, the rituals, ceremony and history of a ruling class and citizen and servant class, things do come easier in that regard then in the USA.  Formal dinners and entertainment etiquette I find most attractive as well.  That said, the United States depending on location and situation offers similar things that might not be as rigid as the UK style of manners, authority/respect dynamics and understandings of history, ceremonies and protocols/etiquette and the like.  Since it is hard to find any individuals in neighborhoods having rotation teas at each other's homes, lunchens or a sit down formal dinner; this practice is mostly foreign to most.  It takes great effort to get anybody interested in the BDSM community, let alone in normal neighborhood/vanilla settings.
 
That said, there will always be pros and cons to any practice regardless of country, state, county or class of people.
 
In addition, I am of the belief; that individuals are able to, may/can/will borrow from those cultures, styles, examples given of what works for them in their 'ways' of practicing the lifestyle.  Presently, there has been a pattern of borrowing from long existing authority structures, such as military, religious, civilian and or Imperial.  Each has elements that are worth examining for which contents best suits the tastes of those who wish to practice the dominant-submission power exchanges and structures that may assist in forming a relationship.
 
I think other posters have properly seen, that it really is the matter of using the elements of D/s, M/s, S&M and or BDSM to which creates our (in general terms) happiness and well being.
Other than regional/country/territory/cultural differences--the general goals seem, to me--much the same.
 
Just some thoughts.

i don't wholly agree with this view. i am not dismissing it either. Again it's the nature versus nurture debate. We are each of us influenced by our innate personalities/psyches but also very strongly by our environment.
I am pretty certain that iwhat in part drives a person to re-locate is not simply to embrace the other person but to embrace their community as well.

I have never lived in Japan but was talking last night to someone who has both worked and lived there and i was so surprised on how the japanese view of transvestism and transgenderism is quite different to the majority view in the UK for example.
Again poly families are simply normativein in those partd of the Muslim world where i have seen it function openly with all the wives following dutifully beind with no bdsm context whatsoever ....mormative there but would be considered extreme bdsm protocol here.
Body language is also culturally composed

I have said how much I dislike the English wanky spanky fixation...naughty school boys needing headmistress's permisssion....it's what i call a narrow band fetish. Based on the still existent public school (read private/privation boarding school) where the only female was headmistress or Nurse.
Endless English submissive males wanting a good caning....my favourite antique shop near here has a huge collection of canes...real flexible school ones. Some subs don't like a curved handle...etc and will work their way through from fine extremely flexible ones to the harsher crueller cane...as an empath I swear i can 'feel' the number of bottome each cane has punished when I am looking through those antiques....the number of riding vrops I have bought there the owner must thiink I own a stable yard.
Crops canes and walking sticks all come in handy (scuse the pun) as gifts for both Dom's Dommes and subs. I like to have a selection He can choose from.......and we all know the handle of a riding crop is errrmmm an added insert woops I mean incentive lol.

Status: offline 		No doubt, enviroment influences us all. But I am hesitant to say that I am a part of the "U.S" BDSM scene. Besides this forum, I have no contact with people who talk of the lifestyle in other parts of the country. I have no clue what the scene is like in Texas, Florida or New York. And given the "Baby San Francisco" vibe of Santa Cruz, I wouldn't be surprised if people in Southren California thought differently then people up here in Northren California. I'm not even sure what the U.S. scene is, but then again, I am rather inexperienced.

I think this conversation overlooks factors such as religion, culture, generation and upbringing and a host of other factors.

We can't take it down to a microcosmic level for a general discussion because every single person will have a different idea of what the scene is like. We can, with relative accuracy, describe our experiences on a larger scale, however.

You're right on, Lotus. Regional differences. It is the same on a transcontinental level as well but perhaps more pronounced because of the "foreign" nature of other societies and societal training.

Status: offline 		Another one of my points is that I don't see that there is a national BDSM scene, or how current pratices really would form one. Correct me if I am wrong, but given the large amount of spammers, scammers and trolls, it seems more like people perfer a local scene to a wider network.

Status: offline 		Mm. Yeah. From country to country it seems to vary. Mind you, I don't have tons of experience with this one - one Canadian dude and then Aba (I'm American) - but there is a different feel, as others have noted, not necessarily different than contrasts in dialect, colloquialisms, traditions, etc. It can be boiled down to minutiae or stretched to form a larger collective.

Status: offline 		Canada and America are HUGE. Size does matter! If it takes several days to drive to the other side of the country, people just won't try to reach out because they resonably cannot. However...Are there any general trends, if not concrete ones, for an U.S. BDSM scene? Or what would be the different types of U.S. scenes?

I also wonder if Straight/Gay just diverge and have seperate ways of working

Status: offline 		As someone else noted, the US seems to move like wildfire (I read something the other day "How can you tell a Dom and sub are on a second date? The moving van is in the driveway.") and is a little more temporary than others places. The scene is more closed and private in Israel for obvious relgious and morality reasons. The Canadian fling had a European flair but that could have been the crowd I was around and not indicative of the entire country.

I have not had a Dom in every region of the US. I have met doms and subs (and regular ol' people) from all over the place just in friendship, and it is different. Think of the difference between a New Yorker and a Texan. Or an Alabaman and a Coloradan. Where a person is from flavors what they're like, although it does not define them. The beauty is that we can travel, learn, enjoy, experiment, and change. (If I had a zillion dollars I'd go from country to country, learn the language and customs, then travel to the next place.)

Mmm, sadists, yes (at least one)! But not everyone in Israel is Jewish. There are a lot of breathtakingly interesting things to do to people in Israel though ... like ... driving a cleaning woman home who lives in the Muslim section of Jlm, even though the woman and I are in the back seat and Aba is in the front. It is called living on the very edge and is so amazing to me that I can't believe it. Culture shock, quite literally. Dodging suicide martyrs can be interesting too.


Sadism  also appears to be quite common,, I have recieved several emails from men in Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Iran  etc and I will go online and chat  and I have found that their desired interests in a slave is pretty similiar in that area.

Aba ~loves~ to teach (and to "punish" for incorrect answers) but Israeli men seem to have a ... mm ... weakness (so to speak) for being schoolmaster-ish types. (And butts. Tusikim. Spankers, the lot of 'em, which actually fits pretty well with the school scene.)
