I heard this song on the radio earlier and it made me think of MJ and of the other men I know who have daughters; even if you don't like country music, you can appreciate the lyrics. I remember my father saying something similar to the first few guys who came knocking at our door.

Artist: Atkins Rodney
Song: Cleaning This Gun (Come on in Boy)
Album: If You're Going Through Hell

The Declaration of Independence
Think I could tell you that first sentence
But then I’m lost

I can't begin to count the theories
I've had pounded in my head
That I forgot

I don't remember all that Spanish
Or the Gettysburg address
But there is one speech from high school
I'll never forget

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Ain’t it son?
Hey y'all run along and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Bet I’ll be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Well now that I’m a father
I’m scared to death one day my daughter
Is gonna find
That teenage boy I used to be
That seems to have just one thing on his mind

She’s growin' up so fast
It won't be long before
I’ll have to put the fear of god into
Some kid at the door

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all go out and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Now it's all for show
Ain’t nobody gonna get hurt
It’s just a daddy thing
And hey, believe me, it works

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all run along and have a little fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Son, now y'all buckle up and have her back by te- let's say about nine...thirty.
Drive safe.

yep, lmao!

Argent didn't have a gun to clean for our daughter's beaus, but they all had to come inside and be introduced at the very least.  I am so glad my parenting days are over, it is way scarier today than it used to be.

Maybe I really do know you, some of my friends used to sit and clean guns when their little girl's dates would come to pick them up.

inching closer to that magical age when my oldest is allowed to date - thank goodness, she's not interested in boys ...right now.  i didn't have problem with boys when i was her age because they were too afraid to meet the military dad (who had an AK-47 rifle hidden in the house ....just kidding).

My dad didn't have a shotgun (at least not out!) he didn't need one.  If I were to sit at home watching TV with a boy he had a 110lb dog that he would bring in and tell to sit and guard.  And I'll be d***ed if that dog didn't start barking if he laid a hand on me!

one of my closest guy friends is letting his daughter go on her FIRST date tomorrow night, he told me he is getting his antique collection out and is gonna have them on the table and start cleaning them, one by one, when the boy comes over to pick her up and say the same thing as in the song {giggles}; he figures it will take him about 2 or 3 hours to clean every gun throughly once, by then, they should be back.  i HAVE to stop giving him ideas.

I love it! thats a great idea
I used to have a clean cut friend who would pick up a certain girl for me, her dad did find out cuz he was a cop and ran my plates, got herself in a lot of truble when I quit seeing her, so sometimes its ok to be protective but not act on it, because kids will find a way to play and when not allowed to get in far more trouble

Dad's who always talked shit, when I dated their daughters, never scared me.  They want to scare the guy because they know they won't do shit, when it comes down to it.

The dad's who were chill and just let me the the girl do our shit, were the ones who fuckin scared me.

I did a lot of shooting like in CAS and had reloaders and guns all over.
Sorry to say it didn't scare the creep she wound up marrying then divorcing.
My friend rode with a certain motorcycle group and that had a much bigger impact.
He also had me take a Polaroid of him picking one kid up by the neck. After it developed, he told the kid to tape it to his mirror and look at it whenever he got dressed to pick up his daughter. He never came back.

When I was in Highschool my best friend had the car, not me. One Friday night he picked up me, then my girlfriend, then we headed over to his new girlfriend’s house to pick her up. When we got there his girlfriend came out and said (rather sheepishly and obviously embarrassed), "my dad wants to see you for a few minutes – alone." My best friend was rather nonchalant about it. "Okay," he said and sauntered up to her door with that arrogant stride that comes so naturally to young men.

The three of us waited in the car, me and my girlfriend making jokes about what threats our friend was enduring while his girlfriend just sat there with her head in her hands. Five minutes go by. Ten minutes. Almost fifteen minutes later my best friend comes back out. The saunter was gone, replaced with the kind of walk one would expect to see from a death row inmate on his way to the gas chamber. There was a definite sheen of sweat on his forehead.

My girlfriend and I jokingly pestered him with questions about what her father had said as he got back into the car but he didn’t say anything. He just kind of stared off into space for a moment then turned toward his girlfriend. "You know," he said, "you father loves you very much."

To this day he has never told me (or anyone as far as I know) what was said inside that house. I do know this, however: He was to have her home by midnight but as the evening wore on it was obvious that he was aiming for 11:55 – just to be on the safe side.

i was 2 minutes late coming home once.  we had a flat.

i was grounded the next 3 months AND i got the hell beat out of me.  and not in a good way.  i was 17 and dating the guy who would be my first husband.

being a braggart is a good enough thing.  putting your girl in danger isnt, necessarily.

kitten, who was not treated well at home.

I think your problem was you weren't treated well at home, not that you got home two minutes late.

I'm sure your father was a real champ.
