The court ruled 4-3 that Genarlow Wilson's 10-year sentence was cruel and unusual punishment.

He may be out today.

I was watching CNN and his lawyer was on, she said this was proof that the justice system worked. Argh. (the argh was me). It worked because it was through using the justice system he was finally freed.

That interview made me grind my teeth. Justice failed him from the beginning.

In the UK the age of consent is sixteen and most adults take this to mean that they can have legal sex with a sixteen year old. Which is legally correct but I think what these adults are failing to realise is that the age of consent is sixteen for one reason only:

To stop teenagers being criminalised for underage sex with one another.

Obviously in this case he was seventeen and she was fifteen so it would have been a bit of a grey area legally anyway. I only mention any of this because people sometimes wonder why the age of consent is so low and this is a fine example of why.

I think adults that have sex with sixteen year olds are taking liberties with the law and maybe age difference should be taken into account in these cases.[8|]

Raechard...... The age of consent in the UK for women used to be 13, until it was raised to stop child prostitution, sometime in the 1880s. It has nothing to do with making sex between teenagers legal. Sex between teenagers and older people is a moral concern only, and as such has no bearing on the law.

In my opinion the law would have been changed lone ago if it wasn’t for the concern of criminalising teenagers and that’s what I meant.

Anyone who as an adult views a sixteen year old as fair game and an equal has something wrong with them in the head is my opinion also.

I happen to agree with you..... If im right it used to be even lower than 13, which is appauling in my view.

The law needs a shake up for consistency also. There are many various age limits for things.

Drink at 18.
Learn to drive at 17. (might be changed to 18)
Have sex at 16, which entails the risk of bringing new life into the world.
If you are homosexual the age of consent is 18.
Leave school and work at 16.

What is going to affect your life more: getting drunk or having children?

I wonder how these things get brought to light?  SOMEONE had to have complained.
 
Maybe it was criminal because it was really BAD oral sex :)
