For me it's going to be interesting to watch how much faster the "better off white folk" in California get help, while most of New Orleans and it's people are still in ruins.

Missy.

That's precisely the kind of question they were seeking to avoid.  With perfect justification in my mind.  Can we maybe get the rest of the fires controlled first?

Bufotenin -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/26/2007 11:19:15 PM)

What you fail to realize is that when the obvious way to avoid snarky questions by the media is simply making a press statement, live, pre-recorded or written, having your staff pretend to be media representatives and ask pre-written questions is of no real positive benefit in any way. The same answers are going to be given, the media would play it and/or read it either way.

What do you think is a better use of time and department resources given "the exigent circumstances" at hand?

a) Making a statement, and simply declining to take any questions "at this time"
or
b) Writing a script, rehearsing, and faking a press conference

TheHeretic -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/26/2007 11:28:48 PM)

Because, then the talking point becomes, "why didn't FEMA have a press conference/what are they trying to hide?"  A press conference is the standard protocol.  This way, they bought a little time.

You don't think they were asking those questions when they were given 15 minutes notice of the 'conference', none of the submitted questions were addressed, and none of the 'reporters' invited to the conference had ever been heard of? The only reason those questions weren't a talking point either way is because the media itself was focused on the exigent circumstances, such as 'where the fuck are the helicopters' and 'a quarter of a million people have been evacuated'.

Yes. I see things like this, and wonder, what is wrong with these people???

I see things like this and wonder what is wrong with us!

SimplyMichael -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/26/2007 11:38:50 PM)

And like most things Republicans try, it failed miserably.  I watched it and it looked like the typical White House Press Briefing, bullshits shoveled out  and swallowed whole by idiots and regurgitated later to a hungry audience of Republicans who seem ready to swallow anything.

I mean the morons haven't finished the last two wars and want to start a third one and lucky for them, their worshipers can't even recognize the same regurgitated lies and ever changing rational.  It was a nice experiment and while I wish it was otherwise at least historians will be able to pin the exact date the US began its rather rapid decline, 2000.

I've been waiting for this topic!  LOL
My solution:  Just disband FEMA.
In fact, lets disband most things Federal.
That should solve most of these problems.

Hey we agree actually on something!

BINGO!!!

FEMA is an important and necessary federal agency. The present leadership needs to spend some quality time in the unemployment line.

I love government apologists!  LOL

The present leadership?  They already fired the last group.

Yeh they are important FEDERAL agencies

Likewise Homeland insecurity, NSA, CIA, FBI, DIA, BATF, and all those other motherfuckers that violate our rights!

I think we should sell off water to the highest bidder instead giving all that welfare water to Arizona.  No more government interference in water distribution!

I dont see any reason that a state that has natural water owing it to any other state unless through an agreement via the 2 parties. I absolutely disagree with the feds sticking thir nose in so they can populate another state, set precedence and then force the state with the natural resources to give the water up to them for the rest of eternity.

Gwynvyd -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/26/2007 11:57:54 PM)

Hell we have had "Fake news confrences" and "fake news stories" that sum up to be merely govt propaganda for the last what 7 years? nothing new there... the current admin got busted on it.. but no one seemed to give two shits. The press was too scared to press the point. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0329-12.htm  http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/19/politics/19gao.html?_r=1&ex=1109048400&en=2b04c5734ad1b374&ei=5070&oref=slogin

That's the thing when you have a Dominionist running your country who has some seriously scary ties to some wickedly frightening folks. Pick the worlds biggest dumbass and bully to run your country not once but twice.. and this is what you end up with. ( hey, I didnt vote for him... heck most of us didnt vote for him.. not that *that* mattered... ) http://www.yuricareport.com/Dominionism/TheDespoilingOfAmerica.htm   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominionism

and of course the rich white Californians will get the help ASAP. They vote... and arent disenfranched from the system. Not to mention they have lawyers on speed dial.

Gwyn,
who might be a bit crabby ( PMS ) and just doesnt trust this current admin, or anything attached to it.

Okay, this brings up the question, if someone (white, black, or glow in the dark, etc) is "rich", should they recieve much, if any, in the way of government help?

I understand what you mean, Missy. The Katrina situation was (and is) an unholy mess, and embarrasment.

Having said that..... I live where hurricane Rita hit, and lost my home, and quite a bit more. We're not a wealthy region, by any means, but the government did a decent job helping out here, white, black, and hispanic.

WASHINGTON - The White House scolded the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday for staging a phony news conference about assistance to victims of wildfires in southern California.

The agency — much maligned for its sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina over two years ago — arranged to have FEMA employees play the part of independent reporters Tuesday and ask questions of Vice Adm. Harvey E. Johnson, the agency’s deputy director.

The questions were predictably soft and gratuitous.

It's weird that anyone can believe that there are no people of color living in California, that only white people can be wealthy, or that nothing has been done for the people of New Orleans.

Where do you even begin to debate with someone that sees the world through such funny glasses?

SimplyMichael -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/27/2007 7:31:51 AM)

How do you begin to deal with people who can't look at facts such as average income and or housing costs and draw rather obvious let alone subtle conclusions?  Lucky for people like Bush, they have enough of those on their side that fooling them takes almost no effort.

If they had insured their homes, probably just as quickly as those in New Orleans who insured their homes did.

However, I thought I heard that they were building in a known fire hazard area.  Chances are they weren't covered for fire, if that was the case.

Bush has bankrupted and pillaged programs that would help them (for HIS war) that they will just do what they can to fix their situation.  PEOPLE.. THERE IS NO LIFEBOAT ANYMORE.  Katrina was just the first fatality of our broken government... but make it a race issue and your attention is drawn away from the real issues.

I swear- some republicans have their tongue so far up Bush's ass they could lick the back of his eyeballs.  Blind faith is just that- blind

DomKen -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/27/2007 8:27:07 AM)

Why is FEMA or something like it necessary? Because the US has areas where population densitry is high enough that a natural disaster can easily affect millions of people. California does not have the internal resources to handle this situation. The Gulf coast did not and does not have the local capability to recover from a major storm. If/when the the New Madrid fault zone goes the central US will be damaged across state lines and affect tens ofmillions of people.

Prior to FEMA disaster recovery was put together ad hoc for each emergency and much waste and delay was experienced. Until GWB FEMA had been a very effective organization. NYC's post 9/11 recovery efforts owed a great deal to FEMA.

pahunkboy -> RE: FEMA holds fake news conference (10/27/2007 8:35:32 AM)

This demonstrated how replaceable- and how irrelevant mainstream media is.

The had office people ask questions they thought would be asked.  Why then would we need the media?  The mainstream media is not relevant. A 7 year old could ask better questions!
