There's a lil guy running around my appartment.  I can hear him knocking things around under my roommate's bed, but I can't seem to find where exactly he's at..

So, my question is..
Any ideas how to catch a mouse humanely?
-I have zero interest in maiming/killing it.
-Do common mice tend to have any diseases or other issues I should be aware of?

I don't have any firsthand advice to offer, CL, but Googling "mouse humane trap" yielded some promising info. Good luck!

Don't believe everything you hear about "ultrasonic pest deterents". I just recently got some and they work, wonderfully. I got the "Riddex" units. They are amazing!!!!

Kill the little so-and-so's. From the good Wiki people;
  • Rickettsial pox is a disease similar to chicken pox and is spread to people by mites that are usually found on mice.

  • Rat bite fever is spread to people when they are bitten by an infected mouse, rat, or other rodent.

  • Food poisoning (namely salmonellosis) is spread to people when food, food preparation surfaces or dishes are contaminated by saliva, urine or feces from a mouse.

  • Hantavirus is a respiratory disease that is carried by small rodents, especially deer mice. It is spread to people when they breathe in dust that contains the rodents infected saliva, urine or feces. Although uncommon, people can also get hantavirus if they are bitten by an infected mouse.

  • Plague is spread to people when they come in contact with fleas from infected rodents or when people are bitten by infected rodents. However, today plague is usually spread to people by rodents like prairie dogs and squirrel.

Poisoning them can stink though, because it leaves several dead rotting little bodies laying around in completely inaccessible places. They breed fast, so getting right on it is key

If you decide to kill it, use a standard mouse trap - the kind that thwacks their necks broken in an instant.  It's much more humane than poison or those horrid little sticky pads.

You can always create a little trap that cages the little guy and then send him out to the fields to play.

I’ve designed a real life, full scale prototype from the model shown above and I have to say it has been fairly effective.

Suspending the bathtub in mid air was rather tricky but no outside my abilities.

Mice can go just about anywhere and yes they carry disease. They can get into a shut drawer, boxed food etc. I made a neato shoe box w/ a string and some peanut butter trap then let them go way way outside.
I hate killing mice, they are awfully cute!

I would be happy to exchange your lil mouse for my unknown thing living in my house.

I never had good luck with standard mouse traps unless I added some peanut butter for bait. That worked. More important is finding out how they got in and closing the hole off. Go find your caulk gun.

Yes.  I actually have the answer here.

Cat.

(Very humane).

(Okay...it's not humane...it's catane).

There is one problem with humane traps though. Once you release the mouse it is likely to return to where it was finding easy food. Better get well out of town before you release it in the wild.

I know for a fact that there must be mice in all states (even alaska?), but we here in Virginia seem to have more than our share..(see my  journal..lol).  i've named all my mice "henry" with the idea that i'd get a cat that i'd name Ann Bolynn..lol.  The only problem was my landlord wanted an extra $100 non-refundable deposit and and extra $20 a month..not in the budget..yuck!!  The other thing i realized is that with my luck the cat would present me with the dead mouse as a gift when i came home from work, sooooooo...that idea was shelved..lol.  The last mouse i found was in my kitchen sink, dead as a door nail, but looking very much alive..not the way i wanted to start my morning, which was probably that sonic boom ya heard down in Richmond not long ago..lol.  i have those thingies ya plug in with a red light, but they don't seem to work, or maybe the mice around here where headsets like everyone on Metro.  Anyway...if any one knows another way to keep em out, i'd be most appreciative...

Thanks y'all...........
jimini

Your local grocery store should have some humane traps. Petco and Petsmart and other pet stores have them for sure.

snap traps.  bait them with chocolate that's gotten a little bit soft.

we literally got 4 within 10 minutes of setting the traps out.

If you insist on 'humane' traps, I'm guessing you mean catch & release.  Whatever you do, don't try those damn tubes or flat sheets of VERY sticky stuff to catch 'em!  OMG...it took hours and hours for the damn things to die using that stuff; and what a mess it made while they struggled.  It was horrible to watch, but I was afraid of picking them up while stuck in the goo; I really recommend old fashioned, quick-kill traps.

The very few times I caught the tree-rats ruining my garden (commonly called squirels), they rubbed their little faces and hands bloody trying to escape.  Again, if you want to catch and release...don't set traps if you are not home to deal with them right away; I'd say it's too hard on them and hardly humane at all.  Course, I'm not a fan of loosing my pests on others; I just drop the thing, cage and all, in a very large garbage can filled with water.  THAT would be my humane method of dealing with the varmits.

I am a big fan of flame throwers..

Ick... I can not stand rodentia of any sort in my home or around it.

I must have been a plauge victim in a past life.

My Great and Mighty Huntress Cleocatra ( yes her name is actualy spelled that way ) keeps all the rodentia at bay, as well as lizards, bugs, and anything else that would be smaller then her. I am a humane person per se... but there comes a time when something just needs a killin'.

Any disease carrier fits that bill nicely.

Good luck on your pest problem.

Gwyn
