Appalachian Trail - 10/30/2007 11:35:35 AM

Status: offline 		Sometime during the first or second week of April, my Sir and I are planning a vacation somewhere along the Appalachian trail. My dad and I used to hike with a group of friends every fall, but we havent gone in a long time. This will be my Sir and I's first camping vacation together that doesnt involve dressing up in funny garb and beating other people with rattan.....

We are thinking of finding somewhere to camp that has lots of opportunities for day hikes, instead of trying to trail hike the entire week, Id rather be able to set up a nice campsite somewhere instead of hauling everything we need on our backs the entire week because Ive gotten lazy and no longer think I can live with 3 gallons of water, some MRE;s and a sleeping bad....although my dad and I used to do it every year....I have no idea how...

So, for those of you who regulary visit the Appalachians, any suggestions or opinions about where is and isnt a good place to camp? Good hiking trails? Not too crowded in April? Whats the weather like that time of year? Any thoughts?

Status: offline 		It is cold in the Northern Region now at night. A good northern Appalachian trip is Harpers Ferry West Va. They have a KOA campground with heated camping cabins. It is near the trail and a nice scenic area for the fall colors.

Status: offline 		'Somewhere along the AT'?  Could you be a little more specific? Its over 2,000 miles long. The weather in Maine in April is likely to be a tad different than Georgia's.

Alumbrado, we havent made a decision honestly, thats why Im asking, trying to find people who can tell me what the weather is like in April in Maine compared to Georgia.....Although I doubt seriously we are going to go so far north as Maine, nor will we start in Georgia since Ive done the brasstown bald site many times. So probably somewhere in the carolinas up to Virginia will the the probably range we will pick from within.....

Status: offline 		Harper's Ferry is very nice in spring as well as fall. Although based on your preferences you could pick one of the less well known road access sites and camp where the trail isn't so heavily trafficed and have a more serene experience. There were a lot of North Carolina sites like that years ago.

LOL!  I went to high school fo 2 years in the actual place that Dickey was talking about. (The movie was shot in a more photogenic part of the mountains).

I'd look in the Shenandoah, you can get to 'civilization' pretty easily, and there is a lot of Blue Ridge stuff to do.

There is an area about weather. If you are doing an April hike, take rain gear and I would recommend staying out of the washs, and instead look for the AT shelter and camp site areas. In Maine it will still be pretty cold. Hell I was in Maine in Sept and it was chilly at night. For some amazing scenery though, Vermont and New Hampsire are prime.

Status: offline 		it's very lovely here in swva/northern nc during april...   lots of trails & things to do from roanoke va to asheville nc as well as plenty of campgrounds.  mt. rogers is very nice, you can even check out our 'Crooked Road'  great area & friendly people.

Status: offline 		Around where I live you can get to the cumberland gap with an easy drive and there is a state park located here I live in Tennessee....April is rather warm here at time can be rainy never know tho. Look for Cove Lake State Park they have camping spots with all utilities except for T.V. and phone not a bad way to camp if you ask me . Don't know if you want to go to the Cumberland Gap but thought I would make the suggestion .

I think we've decided on somewhere within a days drive of Mooresville, North Carolina. We have some friends there and I think we are going to go to their house first for a day or two, then head over to the mountains.
