Me of all people.

My job is no piece of cake. I have to do research at home, learn things all the time, and manufacturer support is just about non-existent. I have to innovative and think omnidirectionally just to get the job done. The units are incredibly complex and some in the field speculate that they are made that way on purpose, though it cannot be proven.

So this immigrant from Mexico takes one of my jobs. He is legal, has a green card and everything. Been in Tennessee for ten years fixing bigscreens. Ten years is not long enough to learn the field, I can guarantee it.

Now if they have big screen TVs in Mexico, why do they come here ? I mean if you can get in with some of the (I guess few) rich folk and make some money, those around you are a bit poorer than you. You can buy alot of influence and plenty of other things with that.

I worked for this company for about 20 years on and off, and my last stint was around ten. Somebody else took my job there about three years ago, so what I did was simple, I went and took his old job. Didn't even see an application, on the phone it was "Bring your tools".

Well this guy left the field altogether, and that is bad to do. He is gone about eight months now, managing a hardware store. So my phone rings, as it always has. Once he is gone for about a year he will fall behind in the technology to the point where he will no longer have his former earning power.

So now my eggs are all in one basket. That's OK.

But I just find it hard to believe that today, with Mexicans killing to get in here, that someone could be educated to the point that they can take my job. Ten years in Tennessee is not enough, of that I am sure. He must have had some skill to start with. Where did he get it ? If there are enough electronics schools and opportunities to get experience down there, why did he ever leave ? Or perhaps I should consider going to Mexico.

If I worked in a foundry I wouldn't be so puzzled. This field is so specialized that, well the people who design these products would not have a prayer of fixing them. If asked they would openly admit it.

I know why that company always wants rid of me, I am very expensive. They pay it, but business is business. Even considering being friends, business is still business. But that has nothing to do with what my Grandfather told me "MAKE THEM PAY YOU". He was right, time is the most important thing we have, and when we sell it we should get as much as possible.

I wonder how cheap this guy is working. I know I am expensive, but I also know I can do things that almost nobdy else can do. Maybe they don't need that so much, at my price.

Well that was a week ago, and since my phone hasn't rang I assume I am gone. But it will, it always does eventually. Perhaps when it does I will not have the time for them.

As I age, and the industry shrinks I might have to make some concessions. For one, I do not pay my own taxes or anything. The company pays that, I talk in terms of takehome pay. I do not care what they have to do to meet my demands, and they do not care what I have to do to meet theirs.

As time goes by I might have to reconsider. Or just go into business. That has been on the back burner for too long. I can do many other things. I can build a house, the only thing I don't do is the masonry and roofing. I can design and install all of the HVAC, wiring and plumbing. I can do just about all of the carpentry, including finish carpentry.

However do I have the earning power in that ? The first problem I see is that there are too many people doing it. I need to offer something different if I am to succeed, at least in my eyes. You might see a $30,000 bill from a contractor, but very few of them guys on the job are making more than $15 an hour. I don't mean to sound snooty or anything, but I just couldn't work for that. Not these days.

For a couple of years now I have contemplated going into the home improvement business. I already have a company name and a logo. Perhaps it is time. Just get out of the electronics game altogether. Or, perhaps build media rooms for people. Install projection units and surround sound systems. Even satellites and computer interfaces, because that is where it is going. When you get a movie from Netflix you don't want to watch it on a computer monitor, you want to watch it on your ten foot wide screen with the thousand watt sound system.

People build room additions for this. Fits right in.

I dunno what to do. I know I will go work the other job to pay my bills, but eventually I would like something better. Maybe I should take the plunge.

It's not that big of a plunge, and I have the manpower, I know alot of people who are at least underemployed. I know who I can trust and I know who can do what.

It is getting tempting.

Terminator, i am sorry to read Your news.  It's a scarey idea that middle class incomes for people born here could disappear as immigrants offer to do them for lower wages.  For example, when i call tech support for att's dsl system, the phone gets answered in India.  The only thing worse would be 100,000 Indians moving here to perform those jobs and more.

(No, i'm not griping about P/pl of Indian descent, so don't even go there.)

For years we were told that immigrants posed no threat because -- especially illegal aliens -- did work like stoop labor that no American would think of doing.  Well, lemme tell You, the landscaping companies in my old town of Tallahaassee, Florida were making great money and crowding out the American-born landscapers, then raising their prices.

WTF is the problem with enforcing our immigration laws?  You cannot work here without a green card, which You should not be able to get if an American can do the job.  Gather up the illegal aliens and send them back.  This is not brain surgery; someone is benefiting from their influx.  Someone rich and powerful who is careless about the effect on the middle class in this country.

I think it's important to remember that these "aliens" are real people with real families, often with American-born children. When round-ups occur by la migra, familes are torn and separated.

Even if all the "illegal aliens" disappeared, companies will outsource anyway (as you mentioned with phone companies in India)

Love,
GM

The immigrant referred to in the OP is here by completely legal means.

My mother is an immigrant by legal means.

As is my uncle.

Termyn8or,Wow once again I would like to sit down and talk to you in person. We have so much in common. When I was hired we never mentioned salary. I was told to tell the front office what salary and what hours I wanted. They knew my work ethics and weren't worried they would lose money on me. That lasted 17 years, then the company went belly up do to reasons beyond our control. My phone used to ring all the time also but those days are gone in my field. I wrote my first resume at 57 years old and got a lot of my info by Goggling my name. The final straw was when I was turned down for a $8 per hour job at Bass Pro around the corner from me. I won't work in a shop for $15 either. So now I make collars full time instead of just as a sideline. Glad I saved some money but that won't last however the stress is way down.I hope that what happened to me doesn't happen to you but I hear this same story over and over.By the way, when I immigrated to the USA at 19 years old, I had to have a job, sponsor and housing. I also had to sign a paper saying I will never be a burden to the people of the USA. I volunteered for the service before being here one year and served in Vietnam as a non citizen... but that is a whole nother story.

Vad, don't worry I still got it beat. My other job will handle my bills, and I think early next year it will be time to start a business.

The job I lost, well they just ain't that smart there. I was instrumental to their success, but with no vested interest I was eventually gone, and indeed I wanted to be.

I don't remember who mentioned the buggy whips, but I understand the concept. But you all, the consumers, will lose in the end. You already have.

You spend three thousand dollars on a plasma TV and find out that after a year and a half, not only is it not worth fixing, it can't be fixed at all. "No parts will ever be available for this model". They got the balls to say that now. Your lawmakers made it that way, not mine.

You MUST go to an authorized service center. Oh so if I get a flat tire I need to get a motel, miss all my appoinments and work, so that I can get a flat tire fixed by the dealer ?

Oh and they will do it. If they could build this "feature" into your $20,000 car they would. It already exists on those $40,000 cars. But when they charge you $40,000 for a hundred bucks worth of plastic they can afford to man the phones and help you out.

What big industry is allowed to do in this country is obscene. It is unbelievable how much they steal. They get a product with eye appeal and sell it. It doesn't matter to them if it breaks in a week. It was built with slave labor. If the workers were paid a decent wage I am not saying it would cost more, they already charge what the market will bear. If we got down to real costs, that $2,000 plasma TV would be about $150. All this extra money goes to the "suits".

I know because I know how these things are made. Everything you buy is junk, marked up 500 to 1000 %. Everything. The suits get most of it, and the people who actually do any work get a bowl of rice. OK that might be an exaggeration, but an exaggeration of what ? The way things are.

I buy nothing new except food and shoes. The consumerism in me is dead. I know all this shit is junk, and I just won't buy it. The only new thing I have bought in years is an electric piano, and it took some doing to get me to buy that. Would've rather looked for a used one.

You may say that I am not supporting the economy, but when you buy something, someone who does not need it gets most of your money. That is a fact, and that is why people go into business.

Things have got to change, this can't go on forever. The dollar is dropping, and is the worst thing to have. But we can't just spend it all on their junk. Perhaps weapons would be a good idea.

I don't have the solution, but in history solutions have been found. I am waiting.

For now the other job will do. After that I hope to be in business.

But that is a whole nother subject.

T

If he's been in TN for ten years, then it is certainly plausible that he's been working long days and going to school at night to better himself. Ten years is more than enough time to learn several new skills in evening and online classes.

Perhaps you ought to consider upgrading your skills?

Termyn8or;
I understand your situation... And also understand the mexican guy, as well. But the mexican guy is not the bad one in this picture, the big company is! I'm not mexican but still an imigrant, cause I am from Brasil. In Countries like Mexico people go to School, and when they get a diploma, they just can't get a job. In Brasil is the same... Is not easy to move to a different Country with a different culture, language, ideas, food... etc. When imigrants first arrive, they have no choice, l know people who still making $5 or 6 dollars an hour doing very hard work, because they have no choice, they have a family to feed. Most of the time this people live like sardines, 10 people on a 2 bed apartment, eating  0.50c inst. noodles, wearing clothe from salvation army, walking for hours to get to work, sufering because they can't learn the language... It's that their fault? Is it wrong fight for a better life? Who is the fault? I lived in Boston for over 10 years. I saw a lot; I don;t think that is fair for you to loose your job either, maybe the Goverment should wake up and provide for their own people, so we shouldn't have to go over seas to work, fight or study. Go to war leaving behind family and friends, our soldiers deserve to get back home, and be respected like the heros they are!
I didn't want to sound rude and wasn't my intention, l just want to expose the other side of the coin.
I love America, and have a big respect for the americans, is just sad to see all the distruction they (politics, government, Bush)are doing to the American Nation.
PEACE!!! That is what we need.
Good luck Termyn8or.

The guy is here legally........the immigration laws are being enforced........

And by the way, my mother emigrated from Greece, but she came legally.  She was a secretary, so according to you, since an American could do the job and might want it, she shouldnt have been allowed here.??

You cannot work here without a green card, which You should not be able to get if an American can do the job.

Or did I misunderstand something>?

edited to add:  I definitely feel for the OP though, truly.I am looking for employment after 10 years of selfemployment and there are all kinds, not just immigrants, but much younger people who will work for less than what I made a long time ago.
