Taking the approach that my good friend 'Simply Michael' would expect me to take, I could say that the reason for this is that now that the Democrats have the power to financially end the Iraq War the supporting left wing media doesn't want to cover the peace movement and protests.

It there another cause/effect?

What do you think?

quote:

If the "peace" movement holds a protest and no one in the press covers it, does it still exist? If Americans are sick of the war, they're also sick of the "antiwar." Even the media have grown antiwar-weary. Rallies on Oct. 27 drew only perfunctory news mentions.

The peaceniks have become a bipartisan political problem, now that the Democrats who control Congress haven't dared to placate the radicals by cutting off money for the troops. Cindy Sheehan is threatening to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But suddenly -- surprise, surprise -- the media aren't interested in Sheehan's new crusade. Crusades only have a point when it's an anti-Republican point. Camping out against Bush during his Texas vacation was news, fun news, important news. But running against Pelosi is not news. It's a sign your 15 minutes of fame are all used up.

But the people today are sour. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have lower approval ratings than President Bush. Right now, the "peace" movement looks passe. They have no energy, and nothing original to say, and with the change in Congress, they have no more public-relations magic. They better not stand in front of a banner reading, "Mission Accomplished."

Since the majority of The Media is owned by WEAPONS MANUFACTURES, the idea that they're "Left Wing" is ludicrous.

One of the greatest lies being perpetrated currently in America is the media has a left wing bias. Outside of a few shows here and there that are so popular the advertisers will pay despite not liking the content the media is owned by large corporations and revenue tied into large corporations giving them money. Watch any of the neutered press conferences that King George has had over the years to see how the reporters behave like lap dogs because they are held down by their bosses. In might actually be possible we would not have this Iraq mess if the media was not owned by Republicans and failed to ask the hard questions when they were needed to. Most large corporations are run by older white males and tend to be overwhelmingly Republican. Sure compared to Fox News it is left wing but really what is not when held up to that standard.

The reasons why these things are no longer in the news are two obvious reasons. 1) It is old news nothing new. 2) A large majority of the population are in agreement that Iraq is a mess and going forward both financially and for the condition of our defense we cannot continue. The debate is how and when to get out of it which does not make exciting TV. It has zero to do with media bias and what party controls Congress. Iraq has become party irrelevant all but a typical small zealot percentage knows what has to be done.

Edited to make it more readable.

It amazes me that people continue to claim there is no left wing media bias. Do you deny the sky is blue as well? At least be honest.

It takes a bit of a wacko columnist to try to explain the absence of press coverage by a lack of popularity demonstrated by a lack of press coverage. But then the "news" story is from KRLA 8 who announces their commitment to "Intelligent, Conservative, Talk Radio."

If the broad antiwar movement had its importance treated in the same fashion as other White House or business stories, it would be in the newspapers every day and often on the front page. You know, one of those multi-billion dollar issues with the majority of citizens involved, with lots of killings on all sides, and hot charges and counter-charges everyday.

But then the talk-radio types have long had a dual message for their not-so-bright but oh-so-fearful audience: the enemy like the nonexistent "liberals" is utterly defeated and simultaneously ready to take over the country, banning Xmas and forcing your children to become gay.

Why just a short period of time ago, Rush was telling people that the 1930s style Soviet Communists had taken over the "left" in this country. Now Boze says even the antiwar movement is dead.

Republican propaganda at its best.

Interesting how the big businesses of movies, tv. and music don't get mentioned. Don't see the bias there either? Who started this myth that left wingers don't like to make a lot of money. I bet that is news to Ted Turner or Richard Branson.

I totaly agree with Toservez.... the "Liberal Media" is dead. It was bought out swiftly and silently. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20030714/alterman is a great article on how it died.

Would you like a source showing through studies that in fact they do have a left leaning bias?

Here's the OPed piece on it:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2007/10/30/study-media-elites-campaign-news-more-biased-talk-radio

Other studies have been done, though simply watching the news is enough for me to see what is before my eyes.  *shrug*

Perhaps referring to it accurately it should be called by its synonym, the Democratic party. Is there a practical distinction in the reference?

The scientific manner of the report cited by 'pinkme2' should be quoted as well as referenced...
quote:

Another distinguishing characteristic of the print stories studied was tone. Democrats got much more positive coverage in the daily papers examined than they did elsewhere. Fully 59% of all stories about Democrats had a clear, positive message vs. 11% that carried a negative tone. That is roughly double the percentage of positive stories that we found in the media generally. Just under a third (30%) of the front page stories examined were neutral.
For the top tier Democrats, the positive tilt was even more the case than for Democrats in general. Obama’s front page coverage in the sample was 70% positive and 9% negative and Clinton’s was similarly 61% positive and 13% negative.
Republican candidates, in contrast, were more likely to receive clearly negative stories in print than elsewhere: 40% negative vs. 26% positive and 34% neutral.

This is one of those issues that gets hung up on the definition of vauge terms.   What exactly does Left wing or left leaning media mean?  It depend on where you put the definitions.  If you define left wing as Stalin, then no the media isn't very left wing.  But if you are going to use Stalin as the left, Hitler should be  used on the right, and the media is no where even close to that.  What it seems to me is that the Media is Pro Democrat and Anti Republican.  Left wing within the American mainstream.

Merc is of course right though.  The media played up the protests before the 06 elections to help the democrats.  Now they are ignoring it to help Hillary.  No surprise.

Hey Estring, if you ever cvome to Europe you will think the media is edited by Lenin himself. As a European, when I go to the US I expect the news presenters to click their heels and shout 'Siege Heil!' at any moment.

Left wing within the American mainstream.

There is absolutely no left within the American mainstream. Mainstream American leftwing politica are definitely European rightwing politics.

If there is any bias,it`s towards corporate interests, over the interests of the consumer.

The "media has a left-wing bias"thing,is a ruse perpetrated by people(republicans), who have a right-wing bias.

Using that premise, they feel justified with their right-wing spin, and bull-shiter tactics. So this evens things out .Because, after all,"they"(see  paranoid)have a liberal bias.Get it?

Ask someone to give some solid, consistent examples of a liberal bias, and you get opinions and paranoid rantings,or that phony poll, that says most journalists are democrats.

The way the media went after Clinton,24/7,and the pass they gave bush for his 1st five years,is proof of something other than a left-wing media bias.

Can anyone give some examples of a left-wing bias?
